Work Text:

“Welcome home… darling,” Suguru says as he sits at the couch, before he trails off when he hears the door slam shut.

You sigh, before removing your jacket and hanging it up. Suguru looks your way.

“Bad day at work?”

You nod. You don’t say anything. You just shuffle over to him and throw yourself atop his lap, snuggling into his neck. He wraps his arms around you.

You’re too tired to talk about work, and he knows that. So he doesn’t pry. He doesn’t need to. He already knows how exhausting your job is, and saying something will just make it worse.

But he still wants to make conversation. So he quietly asks, “What do you want me to make for dinner?”

You pause, before muttering, “I can cook up the leftovers—“

“No,” he demands instantly, shaking his head. You look up from between his pectorals, eyebrows furrowed.

“No?” you ask.

“I will make something. You stay here. You’ve had a long day. Rest.”

He gently lifts you off of him and places you on the couch, getting up. “Give me some time.”

“Let me help you, Sugu,” you mutter quietly, hand reaching out to stop him. “Please?”

“You’re tired,” he states. “Have a nap. It’ll pass the time.”

“I don’t wanna,” you say, rubbing your eye with your other hand. “You shouldn’t be doing all the work.”

He sighs, and leans down to press a kiss to your forehead. “You always cook for me, darling. I should return the favour, at least once, right?”

You groan— but he is right. Suguru usually works long shifts that extend past midnight, and you like to leave leftovers for him because you know he’s hungry when he comes home.

“I… guess so,” you eventually say, looking off to the side. You let go of his sleeve and slump into the couch further.

“Good girl. Wait for a bit, okay?”

“… Okay,” you mutter, grabbing a pillow and resting your head on it. He gives you a small smile before walking off into the kitchen.

You don’t know when you dozed off— but when you feel a familiar hand shake your shoulder gently, your eyes open.

“Sugu?” you mumble out softly. Your eyes focus and you see two brown irises looking back at you.

“I finished cooking our meal,” he tells you, pulling back and placing a plate on the coffee table in front of you. “I made your favourite.”

He already put out the utensils, you noticed. And he cleaned off the table, too.

You grab the napkin. It’s folded up like your favourite animal, and you can’t help but smile at the thought he put into the presentation alone.

“Why so fancy?” you ask, half joking. You eat a bite of the meal. He made the meal just how I like it, too, you silently think to yourself.

“You deserve only the best,” he tells you, sitting next to you and eating from his own dish. “Besides, this is just one of the things I have planned for tonight, Darling.”

You pause, eyebrow raising. “Other things…?” you repeat, confusion flooding your voice.

He nods, eyes going up to meet yours. “Yes. You didn’t think this is all I’d plan for new years eve, hm?”

“I— well, you never know. Some people have budgets, y’know.”

Suguru gives you a look. “I let you buy whatever you want on my card, and you’re mentioning budgets?” he says, lips curving into a smile.

“You never know!” you argue. “But— anyway. Why do you have more surprises? I don’t need that.”

He leans back into the chair and lets out an exhale. “I told you already— you deserve the best. Just— let me do this, please.”

You groan, hand running down your face. “I don’t have anything planned! It’s not fair, Sugu.”

“And who said you had to have something, Darling? Let me pamper you, just this once.”

You sigh, but let him anyway. You let him wash your dishes. You let him walk you to the car and you let him drive you off to the beach and that’s when you realize that maybe you should say something because you were definitely confused.

“Wait, why are we at the beach?” you ask, turning to him as he stops the car.

“I still have one more surprise to show you,” he says, getting out of the car and going over to open your door. He leads you outside, and you look around you.

There’s nothing but silence around, besides the chirping of crickets and the wind from the waves. But no one resides here— just you and Suguru, and the whole beach.

You face him. He looks back at you and smiles. For a moment, time just stops— at least it seems that way. The way his eyes soften at you when you wrap your arm around his waist and the way he presses a kiss to your forehead is just perfect.

Suguru’s hand enters the bag on his shoulder, and he pulls out a pack of fireworks, and he opens the package.

He passes one to you.

“Do you want to light one?” he asks, eyes meeting your own. You nod.

“You already gave it to me, and I don’t wanna give it back,” you joke, smiling. He meets your grin with one of his own and leans down to place it in the sand, and you put your next to his.

Grabbing the lighter from his pocket, the two fireworks are lit and go up into the sky.

“Happy New Year’s, Darling,” he says, wrapping his arms around you from behind.

“Happy New Year’s, Sugu,” you say, a smile dancing on your lips as you look up into the sky to see the fireworks.
