Valentine Family Planning

Summary:

Hyoga sets up a surprise dinner just for himself and Shun, and gets help from an old friend to look after his daughter. Shun, on the other hand, has completely different plans in mind.

Notes:

Originally this was my partner's idea for a Valentine's fic exchange that we never ended up doing, so with his permission I took it and wrote this! Technically a continuation from the Christmas fic too. :>

Very short suggestive scene but other than that it's all T!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Ever since the idea had been ingrained in their heads on their vacation, and even more reinforced by their Christmas dinner date, Hyoga and Shun were in agreement about one thing.

Let's try for a baby!

They both felt it was the right time to expand their family. Natassia was old enough that she didn't need constant supervision, and would qualify for elementary soon, plus she was also incredibly excited to have a younger sibling. On top of this, both Hyoga and Shun had well-established schedules that they could work around to look after a baby.

Hyoga, of course, was arguably the most eager about this ongoing project. A bigger family was a welcome and comforting thing to look forward to, not to mention it also meant he could be even more indulgent with his husband.

And with Valentine's Day around the corner, Hyoga couldn't help but keep with that theme.

Since this day would land on a weekend, he began to put his plan into effect. He knew Shun would be working a shorter shift at the hospital, plus they generally stayed home for Valentine's, so there would be nowhere else for either of them to be.

Hyoga was determined to make this night the night that he would be his husband all night long. They hadn't done this since they first started dating, and now that they were trying for a child, he felt it wouldn't hurt either.

And to ensure they would have all the privacy they needed, he called on an old friend to babysit their daughter.

"No way Hyoga, I'm planning on asking Saori out on a date!"

Hyoga's eyebrow twitched. "Seiya, you say that every year and she always turns you down."

"I have a feeling she's going to say yes this year."

"Ugh," Hyoga rubbed his temples slowly. "Well, how about if you take Natassia, and just come back if she does say yes?"

Seiya paused to think for a few moments. "Hmm, ok, but if that happens you'll have to pay for my taxi here!"

After agreeing to his terms, Hyoga hung up the phone. Now the only thing left was to wait for the fated day and surprise his daughter. He wasn't sure she could keep any secrets from Shun, and he didn't want his husband to catch on to the Valentines Day dinner yet.

I hope I'm going about this the right way...

Natassia clapped her hands excitedly. "With Uncle Seiya!? I can't wait!"

Hyoga was relieved at her daughter's reaction. If she showed any sign of not wanting to go, he was certain he would follow her every request.

"Yes, but only for tonight," Hyoga patted her head affectionately. "Just so I can stay up late with Mama." He wasn't ready to explain much to Natassia, but didn't want to lie to her either.

Natassia's eyes sparkled. "Wow, you must love Mama a lot!" She spread out her arms. "Like this much!"

Hyoga chuckled, always amused by her daughter's reactions. "I love both you and your Mama the most."

Hyoga prepared Natassia's overnight bag while thinking of what Shun's reaction would be. Maybe he would make sure they had a hot bath first, especially after coming home from work.

Or maybe he would want a massage first?

He was stuck in deep thought before being jolted to consciousness by a knock on the door. Yep, that's definitely Seiya.

Natassia quickly ran to the door to open it, being chased by Hyoga with her backpack in hand. "Uncle Seiya!"

Seiya was surprised by Natassia's loud greeting. "Natassia!"

"Here." Hyoga handed him Natassia's belongings. "Call me if you need anything."

Seiya and Natassia headed off on their way, leaving the apartment perfectly still.

Hyoga let out a long sigh. "Alright, time to get to work."

The kitchen was soon loud and fragrant with various dishes boiling and cooking on the stove. Hyoga wanted to make as many of Shun's favourite dishes as possible, while also leaving some leftovers for their daughter to enjoy the next day. He felt a twinge of guilt for having yet another "adult night" and wanted to make it up to her, even though she was more than happy to spend time with one of her uncles.

Just as the last plate sizzled, Hyoga heard a quiet knock at the door, and immediately knew who it was.

Shun's hair was loosely tied back in his usual long ponytail, and he was dressed in a cozy after-work sweater and pants. "I made it just in time." There was a hint of fatigue in his voice, despite his beaming smile and happy eyes.

The couple shared a brief kiss and gentle hug.

"How was work?"

"Surprisingly, not too busy." Shun slipped off his work shoes and sighed with relief. "I was at my desk most of the day."

Hyoga handed him his indoor slippers. "That's good, right?"

"Sort of. I really do enjoy working with patients, so desk work is a bit boring." He stopped to sniff the air. "What's that?"

There was a spark in Hyoga's eyes. "Come here." He grabbed his husband's hand and brought him into the kitchen.

Shun's eyes widened in surprise at the sight of all the food Hyoga had prepared. Barbecued meats, soup, grilled veggies--even strawberry shortcake.

"Hyoga…How did you even have time for all this?"

Hyoga approached Shun from behind, wrapping his arms around his waist. "I wanted to surprise you for Valentine's."

Shun's heart beat harder against his chest. "I have a surprise for you too...Oh!"

He broke away from the hug, leaving Hyoga somewhat puzzled. "What is it?"

Shun started to walk around the apartment, peeking into their bedroom, then the bathroom, then Natassia's room, before coming back to the living room.

He kept looking around a few seconds longer. "Where's Natassia?"

Hyoga blinked multiple times. Oh no... In his eagerness to show Shun what he had been up to, he had forgotten to mention where their daughter was.

"I asked Seiya to look after her tonight. That's ok…right?"

Shun sighed and looked down at his feet. "Oh...I was hoping she'd be here for dinner too." He slowly made his way to the kitchen again.

"Shun." Hyoga grabbed his arm softly. "I'm sorry...I should've asked you first."

His husband furrowed his brows. "Oh dear, I still love this! It's just...I had something I wanted to tell you both."

Hyoga's heart dropped. Had he really misread his husband's needs that badly?

"Just hold on for a second." Shun rushed back to the entrance to rummage through his work bag.

Hyoga could feel the anxiety pumping through his veins as he stood alone in the kitchen. All he thought of was what would make him happy, and not what Shun, or even Natassia, wanted.

Shun returned and put out a small paper gift bag into Hyoga's hands. "Here." He smiled so gently it made the guilt tear through Hyoga's heart. "Happy Valentines Day."

"Wait, you got me something?" Though he had prepared dinner, he didn't think to get anything more than that, and it was quite unusual for them to exchange gifts.

Shun looked around the room impatiently. "Sort of. Just check what's inside!"

Hyoga reluctantly began to open the bag, feeling incredibly guilty for getting ahead of himself with these dinner plans. "Thank you Shu--Huh?"

Hyoga blinked numerous times to make sure he was really seeing the right thing in the bag. He immediately looked back at Shun, who was bashfully fidgeting with the edges of his sleeve.

Inside the bag was a thin stick, with two bold red lines on a small screen.

"You're...pregnant?"

Shun nodded slowly. "I wanted it to be a surprise."

Hyoga hurried over, dropping the gift bag to the floor. "How far...along are you?" He brought a hand to rest over Shun's flat belly.

"Only a few weeks." Shun placed his hand over Hyoga's. "Not going to show for a few months though. I'll know for sure once I can see my doctor."

"R-Right." Hyoga furrowed his brows. He felt even more guilty about having planned this dinner without letting Shun know. Not to mention, his plans of spoiling him all night long were no longer needed. Technically.

He flinched out of those thoughts as he felt Shun placing a soft kiss on his lips.

"It's alright dear, I know you didn't mean to upset me." He playfully pinched Hyoga's cheek. "Just don't do it again when I start getting hormonal."

A bead of sweat formed on Hyoga's temple. He wasn't sure what that was going to look like, but he was ready to be the best and most supportive husband through it.

"When did you find out?"

"Only a few days ago. Honestly I think I've been pregnant since...that night."

Hyoga tilted his head. "You'll have to be more specific."

Shun crossed his arms. "Right, I guess we've been at it non-stop, haven't we?"

Much to Hyoga's embarrassment, Shun began to count all the times he could've gotten pregnant.

"Maybe it was from Christmas, or New Year's" he extended his fingers as he counted. "Or at the hot springs, or it could've been the day you surprised me at the office—"

Hyoga cut in to mumble a I pulled out that time under his breath.

"Or the morning of your birthday, or the evening of your birthday—"

Hyoga waved his hands in the air and grabbed Shun's shoulders. "Right, right, right, could've been any of those times." His face felt incredibly red from being reminded of just how relentless he had been.

Shun smirked playfully, having been satisfied with embarrassing his husband.

"One of the nurses mentioned I looked a little more haggard than usual," Shun closed his eyes and rested his head on Hyoga's shoulder. "So I decided to check, just to be on the safe side."

They hugged tightly, so tight that Shun let out a small groan so that Hyoga would loosen his grip. Their eyes couldn't look away from each other as they shared this moment in silence.

"You make me so happy Shun...." Hyoga felt dizzy from the fact his husband really was pregnant, and that they really were going to have another child. He cupped Shun's face, feeling his chest welling up with emotion.

Shun kissed his palm. "You've given me the most happiness too..." He placed an index finger on Hyoga's jaw, tracing the edge all the way to his chin.

Hyoga's breath hitched, feeling passionate energy radiating from their bodies.

Shun's gaze lowered, his finger trailing down Hyoga's neck, all the way to his chest. "Well, since we'll be alone..." He continued down to grip the zipper tab on his husband's pants. "I wouldn't mind having a bit of fun."

Hyoga swallowed hard. "Are you sure? Even if you're--"

"Pregnant? Yes." Shun giggled softly. "It doesn't mean I'm made of glass, you know."

Hyoga sighed loudly and gripped the edge of the countertop as he watched Shun lower himself to his knees. After the major fumble he'd made tonight, he felt he didn't deserve this type of treatment, but he wasn't one to object.

Shun tucked his hair behind his ears and rolled up his sleeves.

Hyoga felt his abdomen start to tighten. The anticipation made him all the more flustered.

Just as Shun began to pull the zipper down, the pair jumped at the sound of knocking at their front door. They looked to the entrance, then at each other, equally as confused.

Hyoga cleared his throat and zipped his pants back up. "Let me get that."

At the entrance was none other than Seiya with little Natassia in tow. "Hey-o!"

Natassia ran in and hugged Hyoga tightly. "Dad!" She continued to the kitchen where Shun was slowly getting up. "Mama!"

Though it surprised him, Hyoga felt a huge weight lift off his shoulders. Maybe they could still have the dinner that Shun had wished for.

Seiya looked at Hyoga with an accusatory glance. "Why was Shun on the floor?"

Hyoga's skin prickled with embarrassment and annoyance. "He dropped his phone--Anyway, why are you back? She said yes?"

Seiya scratched his head awkwardly. "Actually, she said no again."

"Huh!? Then why did you come back?" Hyoga didn't want to complain too much since Shun did want Natassia back, but he was puzzled by Seiya's reasoning.

"Well, Natassia said that you were probably going to cook tasty food and she didn't like any of the food I had...plus I wanted the company too?"

Hyoga sighed loudly. "S-Sure, just come in and take a seat."

The small family, plus Seiya, gathered around the cramped dining table to enjoy Hyoga's cooking. As everyone went in, Hyoga realized just how overboard he'd gone in preparing this dinner. They absolutely weren't going to finish this all on their own, especially not the dessert.

Maybe...it was meant to be this way.

Halfway through dinner, Shun cleared his throat. "Actually, I have some news to share."

Hyoga glanced sideways at him. "Now?"

Shun grinned widely. "Yep!"

Hyoga couldn't help but break out in a sweat. Telling their daughter shouldn't be a problem--she mostly understood babies came from cabbage patches--but did Seiya need to know at this point?

He will absolutely tell everyone before we do!

Hyoga placed a hand over Shun's. "It's very exciting news, though we haven't told anyone yet."

Seiya stopped eating. "What is it? Did you win the lottery?"

"Well," Shun closed his eyes. "Maybe a type of lottery."

Hyoga squeezed Shun's hand harder. Please just get it over with!

"I'm...pregnant!"

Seiya shot up in his chair, startling both Hyoga and Shun. "Really!? That's so cool!! What are you gonna name it!?"

The couple's faces were flushed from Seiya's eagerness, and before they could answer they were interrupted by their daughter celebrating as well.

"Mama! Does that mean I'm going to have a little brother!? When can we go pick him up?" She tugged on Shun's sleeve excitedly, hopping up and down on her chair.

Shun brought Natassia to sit on his lap to calm her down. "Now, that won't be for a while--but I will let you know as soon as we can." He didn't want to tell Natassia right now that they absolutely didn't know if it would be a little brother or not, but left that aside for another conversation. He then turned to Seiya. "And no, we haven't decided on a name yet."

"How about--"

Hyoga interrupted him before he could finish his thought. "No Seiya, we are not going to name our child after anyone we know."

"Aww, that's no fun!"

Shun crossed his arms. "Oh?"

Hyoga cleared his throat. "I mean. Up for discussion."

Over the course of dinner, Hyoga and Shun explained to Seiya about their plans to have a second child and how it had been planned for a few months, and how surprised they were that it happened this quickly.

"But you never thought to tell anyone?"

Hyoga covered Natassia's ears. "I didn't feel like telling everyone that we were going to do it every night."

Shun tapped his husband on the shoulder angrily. "Hyoga!"

Seiya scratched his head thoughtfully. "I mean, everyone already knows you both do that."

Shun's face turned even redder. "Seiya!!"

Natassia looked at her parents with a puzzled expression. "Why's Mama blushing?"

Hyoga let out a long sigh. "Anyway. We'll tell everyone in the next couple of weeks." He paused to look at Shun for his approval. "Right?"

"Yes dear, we especially have to tell my brother right away."

Hyoga briefly thought about what Ikki's reaction would be, as he also loved doting over Natassia. It would be very happy news for him too.

Seiya patted Hyoga's back with firm reassurance. "Alright, alright, I promise not to tell anyone--I'm sure everyone will be just as surprised as I was!"

Hyoga let out a shaky breath. "Yeah, today has been full of surprises for sure."

That same night, as the happy couple settled into bed, Hyoga couldn't stop staring at Shun's seemingly flat stomach. He lay propped up on his elbows, trying to look for any signs of their child being in there.

Shun looked down at him from the book he was reading. "What? Still don't believe it?"

"It's just...weird. That's all. I didn't think it would happen this soon."

Shun giggled behind the cover of his book. "I guess I'm very talented at that...or we're just very productive."

Hyoga planted a kiss on Shun's exposed arm. "Oh? So you want a third then?"

Shun playfully smacked the top of Hyoga's head with his book. "Relax now."

"Maybe they'll be twins."

"Highly doubt it."

He reached out to feel Shun's belly again, still looking for any bumps or firmness. "I guess it'll feel more real once you get big."

Shun furrowed his brows. "Oh, so that's what you're looking forward to then?"

Hyoga dropped his head in laughter. "I'll take good care of you. And the baby. And Natassia."

"I know you will, dear." He went back to his book. "That's why you're my husband!"

Hyoga's eyes widened and a blush crept across his face. He was determined to be there for his growing family, which led his mind to think about all the things they would need.

He started to list things like diapers, clothes, a crib--

"Oh...Then we might have to look at moving to a bigger apartment eventually. I'll also take some time off work once the baby's here."

Shun put his book away and turned to Hyoga while giggling. "You're getting ahead of yourself, dear." He kissed his forehead softly. "We'll figure all that out in time."

Soon enough they both drifted off to sleep, Hyoga's hand on Shun's belly, nestled close together for the night.
