Chapter 1: The Quiet Curse

The silence in St. Mungo’s was the most terrifying sound Harry Potter had ever heard. It wasn’t peaceful; it was a thick, heavy blanket smothering the ward. He stood frozen in the doorway, Ron a pale statue beside him, both staring at the bed where Hermione Granger sat, propped against white pillows.

Her eyes, wide and furious with intelligence, met theirs. Her mouth moved—shape after familiar shape forming words of greeting, reassurance, questions. But nothing came out. Not a whisper. Not a sigh. She lifted her wand, her movements sharp with frustration, and slashed it towards a parchment on her bedside table. The tip sparked, then died. Not a single letter appeared.

“The Scriborious Curse,” said a weary Healer, emerging from the shadows. “Or that’s what we’re calling it. It attacks the magical and neurological pathways for communication. Vocal, written, even signed. The mind is intact, but the expression… is locked in.”

“Who did this?” Ron’s voice was a raw scrape. He was already holding Hermione’s hand, his thumb moving in frantic circles on her knuckles.

“Unknown. It happened in the Department of Mysteries. She was investigating a series of… odd occurrences. Non-violent, but unsettling. A librarian in Diagon Alley forgot how to read runes. A Daily Prophet reporter lost the ability to form sentences on her Quick-Quotes Quill. Then, today, this curse manifested physically. Hermione was hit by a jet of silver light from a sealed artifact. The caster was gone, vanished.”

Harry’s Auror instincts screamed. This wasn’t random. Hermione, the brightest witch of her age, the woman who spearheaded legal reform for magical creatures and house-elves, silenced first. A message. A warning.

“How do we break it?” Harry asked, his gaze never leaving Hermione’s.

The Healer’s face crumpled. “We don’t. It’s a curse without a known counter-curse. We’ve tried everything from standard Finite Incantatem to complex vocal-restoration potions. The magic is ancient. Unfamiliar.”

Hermione’s jaw tightened. She reached for the parchment again, pointing desperately at her own throat, then at Harry, then making a searching, sweeping gesture.

“You want us to find the source,” Harry interpreted. “Not just the caster, but where the magic came from.”

She nodded fiercely, her eyes glistening.

Ron straightened up, his expression shifting from despair to grim determination. “Right. So we’re not looking for a Healer. We’re looking for a… curse-breaker. A historian. A bloody archaeologist.”

Hermione shook her head violently. She pointed at Ron, then at Harry, then tapped her own temple.

“You’ve already started,” Harry said. “You have a theory.”

From under her blankets, Hermione pulled out a small, charred notebook—the one she’d had with her. With a pained look, she handed it to Harry. The last legible entry, in her hurried script, read: “Pattern suggests a purging. Not destruction, but enforced silence. Historical precedent? Founder-era conflict? ‘Sermo’ = speech. ‘Mortis’ = death? Not literal. Silence. Look for the ‘Silent Sun.’”

“Silent Sun?” Ron echoed. “What’s that? A pub?”

Hermione rolled her eyes, but the effect was heartbreaking.

“It’s a start,” Harry said, closing the notebook. The familiar adrenaline of a hunt began to push back the cold fear. Someone had tried to silence Hermione Granger. They had just made their worst mistake. “We’ll find it. We’ll find them. And we’ll make them talk.”
