Work Text:
The deafening silence that lingered in the concert hall was abruptly broken by a wave of applause and cheers. The feeling of that slight adrenaline and excitement seeped into Purple, standing on the stage in front of an orchestra; with a violin in her hands. She slightly bowed, corners of her mouth forming a weak smile.
Not that she meant it, though. It took some force to make it come out.
Why would she even try, after all?
Her eyes darted across the darkness laid in front of her, shivers travelling all throughout her spine.
It felt too real.
And yet, unconsciously, she met her gaze with Green’s, standing on the podium and gently clapping with the baton in his hand; and an unreadable look on his face.
One more piece.
One last performance and the concert will be over.
The concert will be over.
It will be over…
As the audience’s applause dimmed into the dark walls surrounding them, Purple raised her violin to her shoulder and glanced at Green, giving him the cue to begin. The familiar sound of the cor anglais started to resonate over the quiet orchestra, leading the melody across the sea of awe-struck people, who felt the sudden wistful atmosphere that hung in the air. And as the violin started singing out the melodies, bringing it to life with gentle and effortless movements of Purple’s bow, Green glanced at his friend beside him. His friend who he…
Nevermind.
Not that it mattered, anyway.
In a short moment, the scenes flashed in front of his eyes like a broken record constantly repeating the same, broken music.
“I’ve been thinking lately, and I got the idea that maybe we could… no, nevermind.” Green could hear the slight tremble in his friends’ voice through the phone.
“I’d do anything for you, if it’ll make you feel better.” There was some silence on Green’s end.
“C-can we.. host a concert?” The metallic, but soft voice was heard through the phone. Green was taken aback, expecting any other request but this one. His promise still stood, but for some reason his words got stuck in his throat before answering his friend.
“Of course,” he finally said, his voice laced with slight confusion. “But.. who would play?”
“Us two.” Purple’s response was quick. However, after realising how desperate she sounded, she tried to elaborate further. “I mean.. You would conduct the orchestra you played with before, and I would play my violin. You know, you often used to tell me that I should play for other people after hearing me for the first-”
“It’s okay, Purple,” Green kept his voice soft, to gently reassure the other. “We’ll do it.”
“...Thank you.”
It was mesmerising to see; the way they could sense each other’s moves, each other’s playing. The glances they shared told a story, rather than their cues. They held conversations, rather than signs for Purple’s entrance. It was almost as if you could see the notes in the air in the form of light slightly shimmering around the two musicians.
They weren’t just playing music. They were telling a story.
“You know how to play violin?!” Red’s excited voice echoed through the room, as he waved his arms up and down.
“Yeah!” Purple gave him a light chuckle. “My mother taught me when I was young. This was her violin too..” It seemed like she wanted to continue, but decided not to.
“You should play for us sometimes!” Orange smiled.
“Maybe one day, haha,” Purple giggled. “I haven’t played in a while.”
The whole time, Green stood aside, silently absorbing the conversation, eyes darting from his friends - and then back to Purple.
He didn’t utter a word, knowing everything that was held back from Purple’s answers. Knowing her truth, all he could do was silently admire his partn- best friend, the almost crumbling strength in those peaceful violet eyes.
Even when life kept throwing curses at her, just as she managed to heal even a little, she still managed to curve the corners of her prett- bright, yeah, bright smile.
No one knew.
She only trusted Green.
The bow effortlessly glided across the four strings, the baton following the movements even if he couldn’t see the violinist pull it. As the composition was coming closer to an end, Green looked at Purple for the cue, and he couldn’t look away anymore; shimmering tears were piling up in the corners of the violinists’ eyes, daring to spill on the chinrest of the violin. There was no orchestra anymore, no audience, no distance between them; the world stopped, only the music that resonated around them, in their hearts, stayed.
In their hearts. One so eager to love the other, and one daring to stop as time passed by.
There was no one anymore. And soon, Green would be alone, too.
“You…”
“I’m sorry Green, I… I couldn’t tell anyone, and I only trusted you because…” sobs filled the air around them, Purple burying her head into Green’s chest; and she wasn’t able to finish her sentence.
“I love you,” the violinist whispered across the dim sound of a harp.
“It’s okay.. It will be okay.. I…” a lump found its way into Green’s throat, gently embracing the Purple stick in his arms.
“I love you too,” the conducter mouthed.

“My mother… died from a genetic disease. And lately I… I felt it. I felt what she felt too. And I knew.. what that meant. I tried convincing myself that everything's okay, that I’m okay, but… Each day, I relive the past, except in my mother's body. And I wanted to… perform for an audience for the first, and well… last time, like you always wanted me to, on her old violin. I hope I will be able to reach her, and… we will experience music together one last time, before meeting each other again.
And I wanted to… do it with you.”
