Chapter 1: I Recognize You

Chapter Text

Parrot, after the devastating death of his best friend, Wifies, was struggling to move on. Every little thing reminded Parrot of him, it was agonizing. Just to even feel a pinch of Wifies presence, he remade the spyglass, but it still didn’t feel the same. Searching for anything, a scent, a stare, didn’t matter. Parrot needed Wifies.

Parrot searched far and wide, with the idea that this time, Wifies was really gone. His feet moved on his own and they didn’t seem to hurt no matter how far he went. It was another dog with a name, Wifies didn’t explode, it was a dog. If Parrot really thought that, he wouldn’t be searching for a way to revive him.

Parrot, and so did most of the people on unstable thought the farlands was the end of the server, what could possibly be out farther than that? Well, apparently no one bothered to try to look further. Parrot hesitantly stepped off of the grass onto some invisible platform. Parrot didn’t know what he was doing, he was just desperate to find anything. He was fully expecting to fall into the void, this was confusing.

Curious, Parrot walked forward and yep, all around him were blocks that he could walk on. He continued forward, glancing behind himself ever so often, avoiding looking down. The more he moved, the stranger it got. Buildings made with bedrock were arranged in a way that were easy to navigate between. Every single building had a command panel next to it and instructions.

Parrot wasn’t going to mess with it, it seemed like a trap. The plan of walking away got interrupted when a sign next to the command panel caught his attention. Parrot looked closer at the sign, and it read, “Wifies #86.” Who’s Wifies #86? What was Wifies's name doing all the way out here? Parrot climbed to the top of the bedrock building and looked down. There he was, Wifies.

Parrot stared in utter awe at what was before him. For the second time, Wifies survived. He could see him again. Parrot was going to climb down but something felt off, a bit too off. Wifies seemed confused at some of the easiest puzzles that before, him and Parrot laughed at together from how lackluster they were. That was enough for Parrot not to approach but still, if that wasn’t him, what was that?

Going forward, Parrot checked every single escape room. Every time, Wifies did something wrong or couldn’t solve the easiest of problems. What was happening? Why were there so many Wifies, and why were all of them unintelligent? The Wifies Parrot knew was smarter than him, so this couldn't be right.

After checking the last escape room and the biggest one yet, a Wifies was actually nowhere to be seen which was strange. Nonetheless, Parrot continued. Expecting another building made fully of bedrock, this structure was built out of stone and seemed much more refined than the other previous buildings.

Walking in, it seemed like a factory rather than a home. The mixed smell of redstone and metals was overwhelming. Making it to the middle of the factory was a shocking sight, Wifies’ being tossed out of the corner of the wall. As soon as they were out, they walked around the box mindlessly while sometimes placing down blocks. Parrot tried to mine through the glass but to no avail, none of them even bothered to look up at him. Defeated, Parrot continued upwards.

The only place that seemed to lead anywhere was up a staircase inside another empty room. Parrot went up the single flight of stairs and now in front of him, was Wifies. Parrot has seen many before this but now, something was different. This Wifies wasn’t wearing a hoodie and was now dressed in a lab coat with glasses. Parrot never remembered Wifies wearing glasses.

This new Wifies was spun around in his chair, his back facing Parrot. Parrot walked up to Wifies's desk and spun his chair around. His eyes were already in a position that lined up perfectly with Parrot eyes. Wifies’s hands were clasped as he stared silently at the confused Parrot. It was almost like this Wifies expected Parrot to appear before him.

Parrot grabbed for his spyglass and showed it before Wifies. Wifies raised an eyebrow before straightening his posture.

“Does this remind you of anything?” Parrot asked, shoving the spyglass closer to Wifies.

Wifies shunned a look of disgust as he knocked the spyglass out of Parrot's hand, “What are you doing here? Did something happen to the Wifies I gave you?”

“The Wifies you gave me? What’s that supposed to mean?”

“The Wifies that was with you for the majority of your adventures, I mean. If you’re here, that must mean there’s a problem,” Wifies explained, not bothering to look at Parrot as he was busy doing absolutely nothing.

Parrot glanced around the room as he spoke, “Yeah something is wrong, he’s dead. He-”

“Died in an explosion? I know,” Wifies interrupted, “I wanted him to stick around a bit longer, but he got too attached to you and went on to do idiotic things.”

“How did you know that..? Only I was there, it’s impossible. Who even are you?” questioned the distraught Parrot.

Wifies or whoever this person was looked back up at Parrot. Wifies still looked disgusted and mildly irritated but didn’t have a choice but to converse with Parrot.

“I am Wifies. That ‘Wifies’ with you was a clone. I wanted to experiment with something outside of escape rooms. I created the Wifies’ that you saw before you came up here, the one that travelled with you, and the Wifies that died.”

Parrot felt a stinging feeling in his chest, Wifies wasn’t a clone, he couldn’t be. He was more human than the person in front of him who is seemingly supposed to be the original.

“I don’t get it,” Parrot paused, struggling to keep on talking, “If you made him, did you plan for him to die? Did you plan for him to become the Director?”

Wifies sighed, he was getting annoyed with the questions, “Yes, I did. I gave that clone more freedom so ‘the Director’ was a choice he made on his own. I don’t know why you look so sad, even if you did everything differently, he still would’ve died.”

“Listen here, Evilfies-”

“Evilfies?”

“Yeah, that’s what I’m calling you. If you create these Wifie, can’t you just bring my Wifies back and let us continue playing together? Is that not in your reach?”

“Is Wifie supposed to be plural for Wifies?” Evilfies paused before letting out an exaggerated groan “I could but, why would I? There’s a reason he’s dead and it’s because I wanted him to be. There’s so many Wifie out there, as you would call them, get attached to a new one.”

Parrot hesitated for a moment, “Are you saying I can take any Wifies here that I want and go home? But I want my Wifies, I’m not okay with just any Wifies.”

“You can have a Wifies or not. I don't care, but I can’t guarantee you’re going back home.”

“What do you mean, ‘I can’t guarantee you’re going back home?’ What do you need me here for?” Parrot started, “You don’t want to give me my Wifies back and you don’t even try to pretend like you like me.”

Evilfies dropped his head and held it slightly above his desk with his hands, “You’re right, I don’t like you. You ask too many questions, and I can already tell you’re noisy. You think you can save every and anyone when that’s clearly not the case. Your Wifies turned out to be an obsessive freak, what about that do you want back?-”

Parrot cuffed Evilfie's hair in his fist aggressively and forced him to look him in the eyes, “Don’t talk bad about Wifies like he’s less than you, you don’t know him. I’m not staying here if you’re not going to give him back to me.”

Evilfies stared at Parrot with the same blank stare as he always has, seemingly unfazed by Parrot aggression. It was almost as if Evilfies saw this coming. That alone made Parrot uncomfortable to continue hurting him because despite how much he thinks he hates Evilfies, he’s much too similar to the Wifies that Parrot once knew. He doesn’t want to hurt Wifies, he can’t hurt Wifies. Parrot tried to turn his back and run but was swiftly interrupted by Evilfies warning.

“There are chunkbans surrounding the escape rooms in a circle. Even if you tried to run it wouldn't work. I already know that you know how to disable them so even if you do break one, you won’t go far.”

“What’s your last resort if you already expect me to get past the chunkbans?” Parrot asked as he slowly shifted his body to look at Evilfies.

When Parrot was fully faced towards Evilfies again he had to pause for a second, his eyes must be deceiving him. Evilfies stern cold expression was now one that could be described as warm and welcoming, just like Wifies. His eyes were softer and so was his smile. Everything just seemed bubblier, it was uncanny. Wifies was in front of Parrot, he had to be.

“You’re right Parrot- I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have yelled at you. I was wrong. Please, don’t leave.” Evilfies pleaded, “I was just worried as to why you would hurt yourself like that. I didn’t want to frustrate you.”

Worst of all, Evilfies sounded similar to Wifies, identical even. Parrot knew the difference between the two so, why did Evilfies seem so familiar? It made Parrot want to stay, which was a problem because at the end of the day, this wasn’t his Wifies.

“Just stay a little longer, okay?”
