Chapter 1: The Tihawnu Clan

Chapter Text

Clan Profile:

Tìhawnu Clan

(Thanator Riders of the Great Plains)

Identity

  • Name: Tìhawnu (“the Moving Fire” vibe, people interpret it as life that doesn’t stay put)
  • Region: Great Plains (open grass seas, scattered rock ridges, thunder-sky season)
  • Lifestyle: Nomadic. They move constantly, not for wanderlust, but for survival and strategy.

Why they never stay

The Tìhawnu believe the plains “remember footprints.” If you stay too long:

  • predators learn your paths
  • rivals learn your habits
  • sky-people learn your coordinates

So they live by a rule: “Leave before the land grows familiar.”

Social structure

  • Tsahik: spiritual leader, healer, interpreter of signs (Akeyla’s mother)
  • Olo’eyktan: practical leader; decides routes, alliances, and war responses
  • Rider-circles: thanator riders are organized into small groups (like patrol “packs”) with a senior rider mentoring younger ones
  • The Route-Keepers: elders who memorize safe water lines, shelter ridges, and “no-go” zones

Their Thanator culture

Most clans respect thanators from a distance. Tìhawnu treats them like partners in survival.

  • Bonding is rare and sacred. Not everyone comes out alive or with all their limbs.
  • Tsaheylu is witnessed. The clan watches in silence, because a bond made in secrecy is considered unstable.

Big taboo: using a bonded thanator as a mere “weapon.” If you ride with cruelty, the clan believes Eywa will sever your luck.

Daily life & skills

  • Scouting: They are expert trackers, planning movements, and influencing hunts.
  • Healers: unusually strong for a nomadic clan, because movement means injuries
  • Craft: light armor, braided tack, bone-and-hide tools, collapsible shelters

Traditions & rites

  • The Unmaking of Camp: when they leave, they erase signs of living there: Mask scents, lift tracks, cover disturbed ground

Values

  • Motion is wisdom (staying can be arrogance)
  • Quiet is strength (they dislike bragging, accomplishments speak)
  • Pack over ego (a lone hero gets people killed)

Reputation among other clans

  • Admired for: rescue raids, scouting intel, and terrifying effectiveness in open terrain
  • Distrusted for: secrecy, constant movement, and how close they are to thanators
  • Rumors: “They can vanish into grass” / “Their mounts choose them like Eywa’s arrows”

Notable NPCs (optional cast)

  • Olo’eyktan: Kxal Vawtìk - calm strategist, hates waste, trusts results
  • Tsahik - Rin’teya - Commanding, knows her strength, prefers a routine
  • Senior rider: Rivong - scarred mentor, believes fear is a tool if you control it
  • Route-Keeper elder: Eylan’iri - knows every safe ridge, suspects betrayal

Akeyla’s rival: Ralu’ey - skilled, jealous, convinced the Tsahik’s daughter gets favored chances
