Light filtered through the sheer curtains of the window, casting the room in a soft glow as the sun began to wake. The smell of lettuce, sliced ham, and other fresh ingredients danced within the kitchen. Soft white bread slices laid atop the wooden cutting board neatly as deft phalanges placed the fillings of a hearty sandwich, placing the other slice of bread on top to finish it off. A soft melodic tune hummed from Nightmare as he prepared the meals of the picnic he and Cross had planned.
The other skeleton had suggested the picnic on a random day, the reason for it was along the lines of…
“Just a nice picnic out, with you and me!” Cross said aloud, face slightly flushed, his cheeks dusted with a faint red. Nervousness radiating off of him in waves that Nightmare could easily pick up on, even without his empathetic powers.
“So it’s a date?” He asked, smiling at the nervous wreck in front of him, subtly teasing the monochromatic one.
“U-Uhm… yeah!!” Cross stuttered out, jittering with excitement.
Nightmare chuckled to himself, looking back at the memory fondly.
Cross needn’t be so nervous with him. Their relationship was new, yes, but he’d been pretty open with Cross’ suggestions so far. Nightmare had made it clear that if he didn’t like anything, he’d tell the other. Yet, Cross had been cautious, overly so, in his humble opinion. They’ve been friends for a pretty long time before this, so seeing him act so nervous and hesitant with his approaches was something else in itself.
Well… Nightmare guesses he doesn’t mind. Though he did prefer his bold and brazen friend, Cross does look pretty cute when he gets so shy. He caught himself smiling as he cut up the sandwiches, the preparations coming to a close.
Steady footsteps approached from behind, a presence made itself known as gentle arms wrapped him from behind. He giggled as his neck was nuzzled from the taller skeleton.
“Hi Cross,” he greeted, his voice warm, filled with affection and endearment. Turning his skull and pressing a soft kiss on the taller's cheekbones.
“Hi…” The other greeted back, tone soft and groggy from sleep, burying his face into the crook of Nightmare’s neck. His shoulders raised from the contact, it tickled a bit.
“Pfft, you’re so clingy in the morning. Go take a shower and get ready ya doofus.” A dismayed and tired ‘nooo’ grumbled out from beside him, close in proximity. “Do I have to??” A sad and puppy-like pout graced Cross' face as he looked up at Nightmare, pleading eyelights look at him in mercy. Nightmare rolled his eyes, grinning and playfully shrugging Cross off, making the other let out even more sorrowful noises.
“Do you even remember what we have today?” He questioned, focusing back on the cutting board and resuming his previous actions. The plastic ziploc bag crinkled as he stuffed the sliced sandwiches inside, zipping it up and placing the packet in the picnic basket, which Cross swore up and down that he bought with his money this time.
Right, like that kleptomaniac had any self-restraint. But he decided to give Cross the benefit of the doubt just one this time.
“Uhh… did we have anything planned today?” Cross anxiously asked, fiddling with his fingers and looking terribly lost. Goodness, how did he fall for this lovable himbo of an idiot? Who is he kidding, he shares the same brain cell as this guy, of course he loves him. Who wouldn’t love that face?
Nightmare looked back and gave Cross a questioning look that said ‘really?’, before asking him, “did you get so excited you couldn’t sleep, so you went to bed late and forgot the moment you woke up?”
“Errmm…”
“You did, didn’t you?”
“Y- You know what yeah, yeah I did.”
Nightmare snorted and laughed, shaking his head in exasperation before reminding Cross about the picnic. “IT’S TODAY?!?!!” Cross loudly exclaimed, hands on the sides of his skull as the shock and panic shot through him. “I’ll get ready!!” He yelled while frantically running off to the bathroom, before promptly running back out to grab his towel from his bedroom.
Nightmare snickered, finishing up the basket while telling the other to be careful and not trip on himself.
