Chapter Text

“Don’t forget, Kris…”
“You promised.”

Those words echoed through Kris’ mind as they lay awake, eyes boring into the darkness of the room.

They know they promised, angeldamnit, but they couldn’t bring themself to take any major action yet. Much to their chagrin, they had ended up forming quite the bonds with their party members, Susie and Ralsei. How would they react when they found out…?

Kris shakes their head, and shakes the question from their mind. That was a thought for another day. Tomorrow (or today, technically, it was 2AM) was the Hometown Festival, and there was nothing scheduled in the way of Dark Worlds. Carol and December had been gracious enough to realise that the Roaring can wait an extra day, and so let Kris attend the festival as normal.

The only problem was that… they didn’t have anyone to go with. Well, until yesterday, that was. Susie had declared at the Holiday household yesterday that she was taking Noelle to the festival (much to Carol’s horror), they couldn’t go with Ralsei, since he was a darkner, and Berdly… no. Just no.

So, Kris had accepted their fate, and resigned themself to going to the festival alone. That was, until, an envelope appeared on their desk. They recognised her handwriting immediately, spelling out “Festival ~ Save the Date!” on the envelope. A phrase usually retained for more… formal events, but she could be a bit over-eager at times.

Kris thought about Erica, and their history with her. Her family had moved into Hometown when they were both around seven. As the only humans in town, the two of them had bonded quickly, and Kris often ended up pulling Erica into their troublemaking. At some points, they considered her better at it than themself, but it wasn’t a lifestyle she stuck to.
They were surprised Erica had invited them to the festival. Sure, they still talked sometimes, but not nearly as much as they used to. Nothing necessarily happened, but people grow, and people change, and boy did they change, even if they weren’t entirely sure if she had. Things weren’t exactly helped by Kris’ deal. Why bother keeping up relationships when you know it’s all going to be destroyed?

Either way, Kris was excited to see her tomorrow, they had to admit. It had been a couple of weeks since they last talked, and they knew that her style was always on point. So, if nothing else, they got to stare at a cool outfit the whole day.

Kris laid back once more, letting themself sink into their bed. No Dark World tomorrow, no Roaring Knight, or Shadow Crystals, or adventures. Just them, and Erica, and the festival. For the first time since they entered the Dark Sanctuary, they felt calm, and sleep soon overtook them.
