Work Text:

The end of another day had arrived in Faraway as Basil hopped off the school bus and walked delicately to his home down the street.

the boy was was tired. It had been a long, long week. He'd been alone for the past few days now- Polly was out on a trip, and his friends had all been too busy after school to do anything as the group typically would.

The times he was by himself stressed Basil, as much as he hated to admit it. He struggled most with his uncontrollable thoughts and anxiety at the times when his loved ones weren't around him filling his brain with light and happiness.

As the boy approached his plant-littered front door, he flipped the welcome mat for the spare key and let himself in. It was dark, with just the light from the setting sun shining through the windows. He sighed, dropping his backpack by the coat hanger and walking to his bedroom on the second floor. he weakly plopped onto his bed facing the ceiling, feeling so tired yet so restless.

Each night after school he had let his mind wander- way too much. In light of such actions, last night's thoughts were particularly unbearable, and he relapsed. No one was around to stop him, and he hated being a burden, thus resulting in the thoughts taking over.

Basil held onto the bandages covering the wounds on his wrist, attempting to soothe their still-apparent dull ache from the night before.

"tomorrow will be better" Basil whispered to himself. thankfully, that statement could only be true. Sunnys coming over, and the two are going to have their weekly sleepover.

each week, that's all the blonde looked forward to. He loved all of his friends dearly, but Sunny wasnt just his best friend, but his boyfriend too.

And this wasn't just any other sleepover. Sunny had been so busy with tutoring and lessons for his school orchestra that he barely even got to see Basil at school. Now that he gets a break, the blonde was ecstatic to spend it with him. Plus, Sunnys been nerding out over a new book series and Basil would finally get to learn about it. If the gardener loved anything, it was seeing Sunny happy.

Albeit excited and antsy for tomorrow, Basil also just wanted to forget his relapse. After all, none of his friends had ever noticed his bad habit, except for Sunny. Basil always told his boyfriend when he struggled, but with everything Sunnys been going through he felt awful putting that on his shoulders.

He wished for nothing to get in the way of his day tomorrow.

he just has to hide it, how hard could that be?

----------------------------

The next day arrived swiftly, and right on time Sunny knocked on the door outside.

little did he know- Basil was already waiting on the other side.

the gardener was dressed in a baggy green and brown sweater that almost reached his knees, partnered with khaki shorts, loafers and legwarmers to match. his usual color scheme- but more comfortable.

interrupting the knock, the blonde opened the door and greeted the quiet boy with open arms. the blonde sighed and squeezed Sunny close.

"I missed you so much" Basil spoke, muffled as his face burried deeper into Sunnys neck. He could feel the quiet boys return of affection, squeezing him back and gently chuckling at his boyfriend's clingy nature.

Ensuing the embrace, Basil took note of the other boys clothing- he looked so cute. dressed in pajamas almost like he just had awaken.

oh wait, it was 2pm.. yeah he definitely just woke up.

Sunny was the first to break the hug, looking at Basil lovingly and nodding his head to the door. The boys walked inside and made it to Basils room- the blonde wasted no time as he started showing off the growth of his new plants.

"okay okay so-" Basil smiled, excitedly taking a deep breath as he held Sunnys hand, leading him to his windowsill.

he picked up a large, full plant with many sprouts. He held it in front of him with a smile plastered on his face. The little green blossom was beautiful,, almost like a baby tree. it looked so livley, Sunny thought.

"tadaa! here is the newest addition since last week!! pretty neat, huh? This is a spider plant, and I've just gotten to propagate it! it's made so many new little sprouts, I love how infinite it seems!"

The gardener went on and on, and each word was music to Sunnys ears. Something about Basil seemed off today tho, but he wasn't sure what. His mannerisms were more anxiety filled then normal, and he looked nervous. Sunny pocketed this observation and stayed present however. He adjusted himself as he felt the surroundings relaxing him internally, relishing in the sound of his lovers voice.

"and look!" Basil spouted, excitedly jumping slighting in his toes. "when I propagated it, I put one in a pot for you!" Basil placed the larger plant down and presented a small, green pot with a white bow around it.

Sunny smiled at the gesture, taking the pot from Basil gleefully.

Basil grinned "now, once yours grows, we can match!"

Sunny giggled at his boyfriend's excitement and signed "thank you" with his hand. Basil nodded sweetly and grabbed his boyfriend by the wrists gently guiding him to his bed.

"now,," Basil started "show me that book you've been talking about!"

-----------------------------

Hours felt like minutes and the day dwindled by as soon as it arrived. the boys were keeping busy all day, and as the sun set they sat uptop Basils roof- waiting for the stars to set in.

"It's getting colder huh.." Basil spoke softly, Sunny replied with a hum as he layed down a blanket at the roofs edge, applying cushion for them to sit. The blonde settled himself next to Sunny, grabbing onto his arms to comfort himself as he shivered gently.

Upon seeing the gardener settle, Sunny swiftly put his arm around his partner, shielding him from the cold. Basil melted into his touch, letting all of his stress from his rough week fly off his back.

Everything is going to be okay.

Sunnys eyes wandered over his boyfriend, he lovingly tucked the stray blonde hairs away from his eyes, rubbing comforting circles on his temples. His vision and tender touch trailed down by Basils shoulders, and upon further inspection Sunny couldn't help but notice the bandages wrapped haphazardly around the blondes wrist. The quiet boy traced them, and Basil shot up like sprouts in summer.

shit. Basil had genuinely forgotten about that- a pool of anxiety formed in his chest.

The blonde looked Sunny in the eyes and held his wrist close to him. he smiled awkwardly and laughed it off.

"ha- uh.. I'm! I'm okay! I promise! just a..uh.. gardening incident!!"

Sunny had a look of concern- this was why the blonde seemed off, he knew when Basil was lying, and he knew him better than anyone else.

"Basil" Sunny spoke, caressing the other boys face tenderly."talk to me. I'm not upset"

Upon experiencing Sunnys rarely-heard voice, Basil felt almost like a spark of electricity went off in his mind. Sunny doesn't talk much- to anyone. And any chance he gets to hear the quiet ones voice, is something special.

The blonde greatly needed the sweet reassurance, and as it laid on his ears he immidiatley stiffled his sobs. His face erupted with warmth as tears streamed all down his flushed cheeks.

Sunny reached up and wiped the streaks gently, starring intently and lovingly as he waited for Basil to respond. the blonde took a deep breath and let out everything he was keeping in.

"I'm sorry,, it's been hard. I've been alone all week. and after school, I can't control what I think anymore and everyone is so busy and I don't want to-"

"be a burden?" Sunny interrupted.

Basil nodded and looked at his hands, fidgeting with the hem of his sweater. Sunny tipped the other boys chin up slightly and kissed him gently on his forehead.

in his own, quiet, and tender voice, Sunny spoke up once more. He soothed Basils mind, reminding him that he had nothing to worry about.

"I just want you to be okay" he spoke "I love you, and I always will"

The blonde looked deeply at Sunny, basking in the love he felt in front of him. He gave up on hiding anything and relaxed his stiff body, curling up into a shrimp-like position next to Sunny.

Nothing gets past his boyfriend, Basil should have known. The blonde had never felt loved genuinely by anyone before, and now someone taking the time to notice and comfort him through his struggles was the nicest thing he'd ever felt.

"thank you, Sunny" Basil choked out a reply softly as he laid on the other boys shoulder, watching the now visible stars enter the sky. The moonlight shined bright on them as they relished in their time together, both forgetting anything plaguing their minds.

Everything was okay.
