Chapter Text

August 4th 1999

“Get out.”

Kathryn stumbles back, hitting her back on the dining table as she is slinging her backpack on her shoulder. She curses under her breath.

“You said you were different! You told me it wouldn't matter...”

Tears started filling Kathryn's eyes, this was the longest she had spent at a foster house. 7 months down the drain, 7 months of thinking this might actually work out, all down the drain.

“Well I lied”

“Ally, y-you promised me. You said no matter w-what..”

“Out.”

The cold, foreign tone startled her. Tears now rolling out faster she slips on her Converse, as the sadness turns to anger she opens and slams the door shut exiting the house. All her hope now gone, she knew this would happen but she hoped it wouldn't. She heads toward the sidewalk, turning around for one last look at the house she thought was home.

She is mad, really mad. You hear a car lifting and slamming back down into the pavement. She feels a little better now, its what they deserve.

Kathryn cant go back. No, not ever. They will never accept her for who she is.

─────── ─────── ─────── ─────── ───────

The radio is playing faintly in the car with the short interruption of stations changing. Holly reaches out to shut it off, it hurts her head. They have been out for hours spending time with each other as Mike has to go back to New York next week for a signing.

“Mike, how come you don't have a girlfriend.. It's been 6 years, it's time to move on.”

“I moved on, I just haven't found-”

Mike stops before he finishes his sentence cringing at what he was about to say. Aiming to redirect the conversation he continues.

“Im focusing on my writing. You are still in highschool, you wouldnt understand..”

“Wow, mean much, don't you think?”

Nobody speaks.

The silence is deafening, Mike has been more on the irritated side lately, a lot of things have happened. But one thing was really taking a toll, Will didn't come. He had promised mike to come this time, but of course he said he had a tight deadline for his new comic. Which is not true, he heard max and lucas talking about how Will had a new boyfriend to hang out with. Why did he lie?

Next second they hear this large bang. A gasp leaves Holly as she looks back to where the sound came from. She had thought it was a crash as it sounded metallic, but when she looks back she quickly says.

“Mike, stop. Stop the car..”

Mike slams on the breaks causing them to slam their backs on the seat.

“Shit.. Holly! Dont do that, you scared me-”

“Mike!”

“What!!”

“Mike just look behind us.”

Mike rolls his eyes and looks back, he opens the window as the seat is covering his view.

A girl, probably in middle school standing in front of a house. What's in front of her is a pile of rubble, what was a car. With her previously outstretched hand slowly falling it takes Mike back, Eleven.

“Mike?”

Holly doesn't remember Eleven much, she knew she had powers of some sort. Telekinesis, that's what she had. And by Holly's book, smashing down cars on concrete is not something a normal person should be able to do, especially just with their mind.

“Y-yea?”

Mike is frozen, he has tried to not think about this for a long time. He believes it's his fault Eleven chose to do what she did. He didn't love her enough, he never did. His heart was always set somewhere else, but he wanted to love El so much. It just wasn't possible to love her the way she deserved it. He couldn't even say it back...

"She lifted that car, I saw it.." She pauses to look at Mike who is still trembling "Fuck it.”

Holly steps out of the car before Mike can even comprehend what he just saw.

“Hey, you over there!”

The girl spins around quickly, almost stumbling over her own feet, visibly scared and crying. Holly can now see what she is wearing, Black converse with a black RadioHead graphic tee and some basic darkwash baggy jeans. She is carrying this shabby wine red backpack, it looks like it's about to burst from the amount of stuff in it.

Before Holly can say anything the girl runs back around the corner.

“Come back!

Mike steps out of the car still in disbelief, his hands running through his hair like he just had the most stressful day ever. “Holy shit.” He huffs and looks up “ Holy shit shit shit. Holly, are you 100% sure you saw what you saw.. Are you sure the car was not already like that?” Mike's voice is now trembling.

“If what I saw wasn't true, why would she run.”

“Maybe because we are strangers calling out to her?! She was all alone on the street by the way, would you not be scared too?”

“Whatever, I guess.” Holly turns back to the car “Lets go Mike.”

Mike follows to the driver's seat, hoping that he was right. How would she even have powers, no more of Brenner's experiments were still alive, and if they were they would be around his age... He shouldn't think about this, he moved on. It's over, no more upside down, no more Eleven, no more powers. Nobody speaks the rest of the ride home.
