Chapter Text
Kab sat by the campfire, guitar in her hand and hair tied back, her pink nails slowly but happily strumming the strings, the soft melody flooding the air and creating a little bubble that could last forever if the world let it. kantje sat by her side, cooking a couple of marshmallows over the flames, one for him and one for kab seeing as she was currently busy with the music, he was humming along to the chords and barely there lyrics, fur a bit ruffled up from the movement of the day and a content smile in his lips
you take your own marshmallow out of the fire once it starts burning up like a torch and hurriedly blow on it to put out the flames, the charred surface of the sweet crunching once you bite into it, the soft flesh underneath a little reward for a day of working and moving and doing so much.
The orange light hits your friends' faces just right and they look younger than they have in so long, the load they usually carry not bothering them tonight, with a song in the group’s lungs and small, horribly burned marshmallows to pass around. You look at Kaboodle and she catches your eyes, grinning wildly at you, the stars seem to shine in her eyes and you think that maybe this is what people meant when they say that all the wonders of the world could be found in the people you love, she goes to sing the chorus and it’s so incredibly off key it’s almost yelling but it doesn’t really matter because you and kantje joined her for it and the mess that comes out isn’t musically pretty but it might as well be the best performance ever put together because you are all laughing together and trying to harmonize to each other
(your heart feels light and you can’t remember clearly the last time you felt this happy, this relaxed)
warmth envelops you, the three of you have been sitting by the campfire for a while and you realize that you’ve almost finished the fluffy treats you brought with just enough time to prepare yourself because you just know that, despite the height difference, kantje is gonna try to push you off the log you’re on to get to the last marshmallow left so you look at him with a mischievous smile and reach into the bag, he tries to stop you but you already shoved the last little white sweet into your mouth so all he manages to do is knock both of you off the log, and you rough house a little but no one is truly mad or even annoyed, your best friend’s face is glowing with joy and playfulness, Kab’s laughing at you both in the background and cheering whoever seems to have the advantage at the time (so really just you) until both you and kantje stop and just lay down into the dirt, the night sky over you holding thousands of little dots of light that shine unapologetically, the guitar dies down and Kab comes over to sit by your side, laying down beside the two of you and watching the starry night with wonder. you feel her hair by your laid out hand over the grass and kantje’s tail tickles you a bit when he moves it and brushes your leg.
The moonlight lights up the clearing you’re resting in and you think, just for this moment, that you feel peace.
