Chapter Text
Katniss POV
The last thing I remember from the Quell was the surge of electricity that came through me as I shot the force field above me. I was thrown backwards onto the ground and the arena dissolved into black. The last full thought I was able to make before my consciousness slipped from me was;
"Did I lose her?"
I wake up in a soft white bed, in a room with a silvery light that gives off the unmistakable scent of roses.
To my surprise, when I sit up, I'm not restrained, but to be honest this makes sense because where could they restrain me besides my wrists and ankles, and when I'm on adrenaline what good will that do? I press 1 hand to my stomach and when I feel a small kick back, the world feels lighter again.
"Hey," I whisper as if my daughter can hear me from inside the womb.
This moment however is shattered by the sound of doors opening and the sickening sound of dress shoes making contact with the marble floor. I look up to see the snake-like face of Coriolanus Snow.
"Snow!" I hiss through gritted teeth, using every ounce of strength in me to restrain myself from pouncing on him and that smug little face of his.
" Ah! Why good afternoon Miss Everdeen, I trust you have rested well?" says Snow in his manipulatively calm voice that makes me want to puke!
" I have," I say. My voice is shaking with a mixture of emotions; fear, rage, apprehension, and pure hatred.
" Don't hurt him!" I blurt, referring to Peeta.
" Where are they?!!"
Snow gives me a cruel look of mock confusion, indicating for me to elaborate.
" Peeta, Johanna, Enobaria, Finnick!!" I shout.
I'm sobbing now. Tears rolling down my face in fat streams. Damn those pregnancy hormones.
" Ah but Miss Everdeen, Mr. Mellark is not here. He was captured by a district 13 hovercraft."
My eyes go wide! District 13? But District 13 was blown up 75 years ago.
I sputter the same question to Snow.
" Miss Everdeen, have you ever stopped to even consider what District 13's export was?" asks Snow.
I go through the list out loud, as this was one of the first tests we had in school.
"1 is luxury items."
"2 is Masonry."
" 3 is Technology."
"4-Fishing."
"5-Power and electricity."
"6-transportation."
"7-lumber."
"8-textiles."
"9-grain."
"10-livestock."
"11-agriculture."
"12-Mining."
"And 13 is..." My voice trails off as I realize we weren't thought anything about 13, except that the Hunger Games memorialized its bombing and the end of the war.
"13 is nuclear weapons Katniss," says Snow. This is the first time he is calling me by my name instead of 'Miss Everdeen', the formality of it all still makes me want to gag.
" We bombed the surface of 13, but because they produce nuclear weapons, it was protocol for them to build a safety bunker in case of an emergency," says Snow.
I quickly change the subject back to the safety of my friends.
" What about the rest of them? What did you do with them!?" I cry.
" I presume Mr. Odair and Miss Slip are with Mr. Mellark. Miss Mason however..." He smirks, that snake-like grin coming across his face again.
" Let's just say that she and Miss Cresta are enjoying their cell in the Capitol," says Snow. Looking so evil I swear my water wanted to break right than and there.
Cresta...they have Annie?! This was worse than I had thought.
"Annie?!," I choke out.
"Why?! She has nothing you want!!" I shout.
"Ah but my dear Miss Everdeen, it's the things we love most that destroy us," says Snow.
"For it is not the fact that she has something I need, but the person she loves most that has something I want," Snow continues.
I clasp my hand to my mouth and let out a muffled scream. It is in that very moment that I realize just how phsycopathically sick Snow is.
"Well you won't get anything out of Johanna," I say, trying to regain some confidance.
"Oh I know, I'm not expecting to get it from her willingly." Snow replies.
My blood turns to pure solid ice. I place a protective hand over my stomach, but what much will that do? I know Snow is doing this to target me and everyone I love, I know Finnick, Haymitch, and Peeta are going to be in the most danger. I look back up at Snow who has the same snake-like grin as before, and I know that whatever he is keeping me for, it isn't gonna be pretty.
