A Dignified Woman Under Siege

Summary:

Weiss Schnee is dignified. Composed. Impervious to nonsense.
She is also married to Ruby Rose.
And Ruby has decided it is her solemn duty to kiss her wife until breakfast happens.
Weiss is not amused.
(She is. She very much is.)

Work Text:

The first betrayal of morning was the light.

It hadn't even fully committed to existing yet... just a wan grey bloom across the curtains... but Weiss could already feel it pulling at her with all the subtlety of a tugboat. She kept her breathing steady... controlled. Eyes shut. Still, save for the faintest twitch of her toes against the far edge of the sheets.

Behind her, warmth stirred.

"Weiss," came the whisper, too close and too bright.

She did not move.

A rustle. A breath against the back of her neck.

"Weiss. Weissy. Schnee Queen of Pillows. Love of my life."

Weiss drew her brow together in the faintest crease, as if even her face were reluctant to emerge from sleep.

"You can't fool me," Ruby sing-songed, barely a breath from her ear. "I saw your toes move."

There was a terrible silence. Weiss had learned long ago what those silences meant.

Then: the first kiss.

Just below her ear, soft and deliberate. Then another, and another, smattered down the line of her jaw like a very stubborn form of weather. She squirmed, curling her shoulders inwards.

"Ruby, no," she said sternly... or meant to. It came out far too breathy.

Ruby hummed. "You know the rules. No faking sleep when it's my turn to make breakfast."

"I didn't agree to... ah! Ruby..."

More kisses. More.

They fell across her cheek, her temple, her shoulder, each one somehow more insistent than the last, as if kisses could escalate in volume. She tried to roll away, but Ruby followed, a determined barnacle of affection.

"You are... absurd," Weiss managed between stifled laughter, her voice climbing toward some panicked register that didn't suit her at all.

Ruby made an affronted sound, lips still pressed to Weiss's neck. "Absurdly in love with you, maybe."

"Stop. That is... it's too early for wordplay."

Another kiss. Her ribs shook.

"Ruby, I'm serious!"

"You're giggling."

"I am not giggling!"

She absolutely was.

Weiss tried to marshal a frown, but Ruby kissed the corner of it before it could even finish forming. She buried her face in the pillow instead, the fabric doing little to muffle the undignified sounds that kept escaping her.

"Fine," Weiss huffed, rolling half onto her back, her hair an undignified mess across the pillow. Ruby looked down at her, already smiling like she’d won a duel.

"You surrender?"

Weiss hesitated, lips parting as if to argue... but what argument could she possibly make now, dignity already in tatters? She narrowed her eyes instead. "I permit you to go make breakfast."

"Victory by smooch bombardment."

"You are insufferable."

Ruby grinned, leaned in, and gave her one final, triumphant kiss... sealing, with maddening affection, Weiss’s complete and total loss of composure.

"Love you too."

Weiss sighed. Then, quietly, "I expect coffee. And toast. Cut on the diagonal."

"Yes, Your Highness."

The covers shifted, warmth leaving in a clumsy tumble of limbs. Weiss watched Ruby's retreating form with a fondness she was entirely unprepared to admit aloud.

She let her head fall back against the pillow, the smile lingering despite her best efforts... ridiculous, undignified, and wholly unstoppable.

Then, abruptly, she sat up.

"Ruby Rose!" she called sweetly.

From the doorway, Ruby turned with a grin, "Yes, dea..."

The pillow struck her mid-sentence, square in the face with an undignified whump, sending her stumbling half a step back, arms flailing and hair flying like a startled mop.

A muffled yelp followed, full of startled betrayal.

"Hey!" Ruby laughed. "Assaulting the chef is a crime, y'know."

Weiss flopped back onto the bed, satisfied.

The light was stronger now.

She supposed it wasn’t such a betrayal after all.

Notes:

The past couple of weeks I’ve been writing a bunch of practice scenes and experimenting with a more Victorian-inspired prose style. Not like, old-fashioned language, just slower, more observant scene description with modern dialogue and a fondness for overly precise metaphors. There’ve been plenty of hits and misses, but this one felt really good, so I wanted to share!

If you enjoy this type of writing I'd love to hear about it!
