Twist of Fate

Summary:

Suguru was meant to be her assistant, not the future partner of his son—yet fate, as always, loved to joke with him.

Notes:

As always, English is not my first language.

Work Text:

Suguru rubbed his face rather roughly and let out a quiet sigh. This was already the third time this week—his boss kept persuading him to meet his son. The boss’s only child. Of course, Suguru refused. He worked as his boss’s assistant, not to become his son’s date—let alone a potential life partner.

“You just need to come. If you don’t like him, you can say so later, Geto. Satoru will be home next week.”

It really wasn’t his business. Truly. And yet, there was a part of Suguru that felt like agreeing to his boss’s wishes. It wasn’t new gossip that his boss was looking for a prospective spouse for his son. Rumor had it he would be returning next week after six years in England. Besides finishing his studies, it was said he had gone with his father after his parent's divorce.

There was a reason for all this—if Satoru, the boss’s son, got married, he would settle down and not return to England. Of course, his boss would do anything to keep his son close to her again. Suguru understood why his boss was so eager to find a future in-law as soon as possible.

“Okay.”

In the end, Suguru agreed. Honestly, he might put on a sour face when he met Satoru later. Of course, Suguru planned to tell him directly that he would reject him.

“Sorry, Geto-san. It’s fine if you reject me right away. This isn’t the first time Mom has told me to get to know a potential spouse.”

Suguru glanced at Satoru, who was driving beside him. His eyes were focused straight ahead. Handsome. Oh God. Forget it.

This was their first meeting—today was Satoru’s return, and his boss had immediately ordered the two of them to go on a date. Satoru had simply nodded and told Suguru to follow him.

“Gojo-san, you’re still young. Do you really want to get married so soon?”

Satoru laughed. “Mom wants me to marry so I’ll stay here, Geto-san. Getting married young isn’t that bad.”

Oh God. Suguru looked away. His face felt warm when he heard Satoru’s laughter. Reluctant to admit it, Suguru liked the way Satoru laughed.

“You’re only 21, Gojo-san. You have so many dreams. If you getting married young, your partner will cling to you.”

Truly, Suguru only meant it as a joke—to lighten the mood. Again, the younger man laughed.

“So you’re the clingy type, Geto-san.”

What?

“It’s not certain I’ll be the one marrying you,” Suguru replied quickly, accompanied by a light punch to Satoru’s arm. After that, he folded his arms across his chest, lips jutting out in a pout. Sulking.

“Mom wants us to get married, so you’ll be my partner, Geto-san.”

Before Suguru could respond, Satoru added, “That is, if you want to.”

“Gojo-san, I’m already old. I’m six years older than you. In three years I’ll be 30—my God.”

“I don’t mind.”

Satoru wasn’t lying. He really didn’t mind. Besides, he liked people older than him. His gaze shifted to Suguru.

“Do you want to try dating me first?”

Suguru didn’t answer right away. He was confused about how to respond. Everything was happening far too fast. Suguru had only planned to reject Satoru, not to talk about their future relationship.

“Geto-san?”

“Gojo-san, are you sure you want to spend your whole life with me? We don’t even know each other. And the purpose of this marriage is just to make you stay here.”

Satoru didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he smiled once more.

“That’s fine. If I marry now, I’ll stay close to Mom. And I’ll also spend my life living with my partner. Not a bad future plan.”

Someone, please help Suguru right now. There was no way he could refuse Satoru when he was this sweet.

“Maybe we can try dating first. We can think about what our relationship will be like later.”

“Okay. Get ready to fall in love with me.”

“Oh, don’t be so confident, Gojo-san.”

“Satoru.”

“Huh?”

Satoru smiled. “Satoru. Call me Satoru. I’m your future husband, right?”

“Arghhhh, shut up!!”

“So, you’ll accept my offer, Geto-san?”
Suguru looked at his boss and then nodded. “Satoru suggested that we should date first. I can’t decide to get married right away.”

“That’s fine. I can wait a little longer.”

Yes, maybe accepting his boss’s offer wasn’t such a bad thing. Because in Suguru’s opinion, falling in love with Satoru wouldn’t be difficult at all.

Ding! There was a single message on his phone. It was from Satoru.

“I miss you.”

Suguru couldn’t hold back the smile on his face. God, was he really going to fall in love with Satoru?
