Edward sat across the room, brooding. Jake had refused to come.
‘This was a mistake,’ Bella thought.
The Cullens’ annual New Year’s party was too loud, the strappy shoes Alice had talked her into hurt her feet, and the champagne she snuck when Carlisle wasn’t looking made her head spin.
Bella slipped out the back door and sat down on the deck. The cool night air made her shiver, but the fresh air was worth it.
“Bella?”
Bella jerked her head around, startled to see Alice behind her.
“Don’t scare me like that!” Bella gasped.
“Sorry,” Alice laughed, gracefully folding her legs under herself as she sat down.
For a moment they sat in silence, staring up at the moon.
Bella broke first.
“It’s almost midnight, wouldn’t you rather be inside?”
Alice leaned closer.
“I’d rather be wherever you are.”
As the clock struck midnight, their lips finally met.
