Friendship feels good.

Summary:

The first step to building a blaze farm is spawn-proofing the area so they don't set fire to your friends.

Febuwhump Day 27: Post-Victory Collapse
This fic was written for round 2 of Soulmate Sweepstakes 2026: Soul Search

Notes:

I think the "whump" part of this series entirely relies on how silly I feel at the moment. Right now I'm feeling like the goofiest of the goofy goobers.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Gem cut down another blaze, her blade slicing through its rods with ease as she thrust it in the head. Soot mixed with the sweat that dripped down her forehead as she jumped into the middle of the spawner room, feeling her fire resistance wane slightly as a fireball singed past her hair, catching a few strands on fire. She swung her sword in an arc, shield held high, and carved into another one of the mobs, the tempered diamond of her blade striking against the nether brick and scoring a gash through it. The blaze died with a hiss, its flames going out as its body crumbled, turning into ash and green orbs of XP.

Grian jumped in behind her, placing a shroomlight over the spawner as Gem attacked the fresh wave of blaze that had spawned. Her fire res ticked down again, her body and clothes staying on fire several seconds longer than was comfortable. She suffered no burns, but the pain from the heat was making itself known again. Grian whooped as she plunged her sword into the last blaze, bearing down on it with her shield to absorb the heat and weight of its fireballs.

"Yes!! Gem!!!" he cheered, dropping his ash-covered sword and throwing both hands into the air. He jumped at her, tackling her from behind and wrapping an arm around her neck. Gem stumbled from his sudden weight, leaning her sword against the wall so she could return his enthusiastic embrace, playfully knocking him in the side of the head. He cackled and poked her in the ribs and she retaliated by pushing him over, one foot sweeping both of his so he landed heavily on his back.

His breath went out of him as she doubled over laughing, then he recovered himself and continued to giggle, kicking one of Gem's ankles. She let herself fall, landing on top of his stomach with a satisfying thump. Her shoulders shook as she laughed, gasping for breath in the thick Nether air. She leaned back, digging the points of her armour into the soft fabric covering his abdomen.

"Ow—Gem!" Grian shouted, his voice high with mirth.

"What?" she shot back, wriggling down and adjusting so she could rest her head on his chest. The two of them stared at the ceiling as they calmed their laughter, giggling madly in their now blaze-free area. The Nether smouldered around them as they lay there in companionship. It felt good to be with friends.
