Work Text:
After you die you have all the time in the world to do whatever you want. Well, withing the restraints being a ghost gives you. You can get into places you usually wouldn't be able to, but unless you focus incredibly hard you can't interact with anything. Without someone with the power to give the ghosts strength to interact with the living world it could take an hour just to type in one search on the computer. Reading a book was almost worse. So Midoriya had to find out other ways to entertain himself when he isn't following his friends to school.
After a lot of debating with himself, he decided to go follow heroes. He can't exactly doom scroll online to learn about different heroes, so he would just find them himself.
It didn't take long for him to find a hero. After all, he knew where most of the heto agencies in Japan were. The first one he went to was a smaller one near where he used to go to get hero trading cards with Bakugou. It had some lesser known heroes, but watching them was interesting all the same.
"Amazing. The way he uses his quirk to navigate the city is ingenious." Midoriya says, muttering to himself as he watches the hero.
They both hear a loud crash nearby, and Midoriya follows the hero to the scene of a villain attack. Death Arms was already on the scene, trying to hold the villain back. The hero he was with immediately got to work trying to help the civilians evacuate the area.
"What happened?" Midoriya hears a calm voice beside him ask.
He looks over and sees that it was another ghost. He's been a ghost himself for a few weeks now, and hasn't quite gotten used to the whole being dead thing. The only other deceased person he has talked to has been Touya. So the fact that another ghost was trying to talk to him felt weird.
"I don't know. I just showed up myself." Midoriya says.
"I hope they contain it soon. My brother works in this area, and I haven't seen him yet." The other ghost says.
Just then they hear a loud voice call out. One Midoriya heard only a few weeks ago. Back then would have been so excited to hear it, but this time it just sent a metaphorical chill down his back.
The familiar phrase of "I Am Here" was followed by a show of magnificent strength that sent the villain flying into a building. The ghost beside Midoriya grabbed onto him.
"That's the building my brother works in. I hope he's ok."
The villain doesn't get up, having been knocked out by that one punch. The police quickly surround the building, removing the bad guy from the rubble. Some paramedics come on scene and start checking if everyone is ok while the hero that Midoriya had followed help the other smaller heroes with evacuating people from the now very unstable building.
A man that looked a lot like the one beside Midoriya comes out with a very obviously broken arm. In seconds the other ghost was by his brother's side. Midoriya, on the other hand, got distracted by the flashing of cameras.
"Mr. All Might, you have saved the city from yet another villain. How do you feel?"
"All Might, can you tell us about what happened here?"
"All Might, a word for Channel 8 News if you would."
Reporters were hounding the Number One Hero from all sides. Most people would be nervous, or awkward at least, but All Might kept that perfectly practiced smile as he answered their questions with ease.
"All right, I need to get going. Crime doesn't stop itself." All Might says after answering several questions.
"One more question, All Might. Do you have anything to say to the many grateful citizens you have saved today?" A younger reporter who looked like he was fresh on the field asks.
"What else can I say except, you're welcome? I can go on and on about the many villains I have fought, and the people I have saved. No one will ever have to worry when I'm on the scene. That you can be sure of. Now I must go. You're welcome, and thank you Japan." With that All Might leaps into the sky. Cameras watch as he goes, but Midoriya follows.
"Usually a speech like that would move me to tears." Midoriya says to himself as he follows All Might to an alley. For the second time in his life he watches as his hero deflates in front of him. "But now I know it's just ego and lies."
"I almost didn't make it. Why do reporters always have to get in the way when my time is almost up?" All Might, now Yagi Toshinori, mutters as he walks out of the alleyway.
"You should be grateful that reporters want to interview you. They're the ones who put the light on you and not the destruction you cause. Several people were hurt with that one punch." Midoriya says even though Toshinori couldn't hear him. Though what the hero says next made it seem like Midoriya had infiltrated his thoughts.
"Though I guess I should be glad they were focused on me and not that building. They'll probably think the villain destroyed the building like they always do." Toshinori looks at his phone and sighs. "Man it's getting late. I need to rest before my interview on that TV show. What show is it again? I can't even keep track at this point. They're all the same."
As Midoriya follows him, he listens to Toshinori continue to complain about how difficult it is to live a life most people could only dream of. A life he dreamed of himself until it was taken from him. The more he listens the angrier he gets. Especially when Toshinori starts rehearsing the lines he had said earlier. A hollow "You're Welcome" echoing from his mouth. All Midoriya could think was how this is the truth behind the man he once idolized. Nothing but ego and lies.
