Work Text:
Izuku was only five when he first wandered onto the roof of his apartment building late into the night. They had gone to the doctors office today, they were finally going to figure out what his quirk was, but it turns out he didn't have a quirk. The car ride home was silent beside Izuku's soft sniffles and the sound of the engine.
When they got home Izuku heard Mama yelling at dad through the phone, and when Mama went to check on him she was crying, Izuku didn't realize he was also crying until his mama wrapped her arms around him whispering apologize into his ears. He thought it was silly for her to apologize since she wasn't the one who made him quirkless, still he stayed quiet.
Then he ended up on the roof, Izuku didn't even remember why or how he got here, all he knew is that he wanted to see the stars, and Mama went to bed earlier than usual so she wouldn't notice he was missing. It was only for a bit anyways. He knew he shouldn't be up here, it was dangerous, but Kachan did things he wasn't allowed to all the time and he was still so amazing, so Izuku could to, just this once.
But after a few moments Izuku saw the shadow of a person slip into place next to him, he hadn't even noticed someone was on the roof until they were right by his side, and when he turned he saw dark grey almost black eyes staring into his.
"What are you doing up this late?" The man asked is voice harsh in the quiet night air Izuku took a small step back.
"I wanted to see the stars" he held his all might plushie close to his chest, finally noticing the cold wind that made him shiver. The man sighed crouching down to be on level with Izuku.
"Kid, it's dangerous to be out this late, do your parents know your out here?" Tired eyes looked over him making Izuku lower his head in shame.
"N-no but Mama's asleep, she um won't know." He tried to justify, but his words only made the mans frown deepen.
"How old are you kid?" He asked brows furrowed in an expression Izuku didn't recognize.
"I'm five." He said with a toothy grin, he just turned five and he was proud to be a big boy now, sadly this stranger did not seem to be as excited about this as he was.
"Geez kid your practically a baby." The man muttered a hand running through tangled black locks. "What's your name?"
Izuku pouted at being called a baby, he was a big boy not a baby, but still answered the question, "my names Izuku."
The man stood up now having to tilt his head down to meet Izuku's eyes, "you should go home, where do you live I'll walk you, it's dangerous to wander around alone."
"I live here, I can walk all by myself." He would walk himself back, the man reluctantly agreed to let him go and to not follow him into the building to ensure he got back safely, after much begging from Izuku. He was a big boy he didn't need to be watched over. But before Izuku closed the roof door he turned to the man tilting his head. "What's your name?"
"Aiz- um just call me Eraserhead, kid." The man said clearly surprised to be asked for his name. Izuku smiled waving goodbye before slipping back into the building walking back to his apartment where his mother was still asleep unaware of the interaction that took place.
It was only two weeks later when Izuku wandered back onto the rooftop. The kids at school were being mean, even Kachan started being mean to him, he started calling him Deku, because he was useless now. Izuku was starting to hate going to school, normally he loved to learn, after all what kind of hero did bad in school? But now, now the teachers ignore him when he has questions and won't let him play with the other kids at recess because he's 'fragile' , it was unfair.
"What are you doing up here again?" A familiar deep voice asked, Izuku turned seeing the same man from the first time, this time the man had a grey scarf wrapped around his neck, did he have that the last time? Izuku didn't remember him having it.
"That scarfs new" he said instead of answering the question. The man- Eraserhead looked down to the scarf in question nodding.
"I had to get a new one after the original got damaged in a villain fight." Eraserhead sounded tired, looked it to, but Izuku knew it was rude to tell people that, he told mama she looked tired a few days ago and she snapped at him. She apologized after but she still seemed really upset for some reason.
"A villain fight? Are you a hero?!" Izuku gasped was he really talking to a hero?! That would explain the odd name, but still he was talking to a real hero!
"Yeah I am" Eraserhead hesitated slightly like he wasn't used to saying he was a hero. Izuku's mind was running a mile a minute, why hadn't he seen Eraserhead before? Izuku knew about so many heros how did he not know about this one?
"That's so cool! Your like a real hero?! Do you fight villains?! Is your quirk supper cool?!" Izuku had so many questions, sadly the man seemed to falter at the sudden bombard of questions.
"Um yeah I'm a real hero, and I do fight villains, my quirk...it's ok." He shrugged, Izuku perked up curiously.
"What's your quirk?" He asked excitedly, there were so many amazing quirks out there, and heros always had amazing quirks.
The hero shifted, his tired gaze looking off to the side. "My quirk lets me erase others quirks, not really anything special." His words made Izuku even more excited.
"That's...so cool!" Izuku was bouncing on his heels slightly, mind already thinking of a million different ways such a cool quirk could be used for heroics.
"You really think so?" The heros eyes widened voice losing the sharp edge it had before. Izuku nodded quickly to his words practically buzzing with excitement. But the hero paused before his expression tightened, refocusing. "Thanks kid but you should still be inside, in bed." He said seeming to remember why he stopped in the first place.
Izuku pouted excitement fizzling out to disappointment, but reluctantly he agreed, the hero watching him as he walked back to the roof access walking back into the apartment building. "And this time stay in bed, I don't want any more of these midnight meetings till your at least old enough to be out here alone."
Izuku shut the door behind him walking back to the apartment in silence, it was quite when he walked into his apartment, mama hadn't even woken up, just like last time, he was able to slip back into his room like he had never even left at all.
Thankfully for the hero it was a whole year before Izuku went back into the roof late into the night. Izuku was sitting on the edge of the roof tears running down his face as he tried desperately to wipe them away. Kachan and his friends started hitting him whenever they felt he was out of place, which was always. The teachers said they were just playing but Izuku was the only one who ever got hurt. Mama cried the first time she saw the bruises, even called the school but nothing ever changed, and Mama stopped crying at seeing the bruises, she only helped him patch himself up in silence.
There was a soft thud and he felt a familiar person take the place next to him, he was starting to get good at noticing when the hero arrived. "Hey kid, it's been a while, you took my advice." The heros voice was soft and a gentle hand turned Izuku's head to allow Eraserhead to look at him.
"What's wrong?" The soft voice asked and Izuku hiccupped as he tried to form words, how could he tell the hero what had happened, why would the hero even care.
"Why is everyone so mean?" Izuku's voice came out in a broken sob and he desperately tried to quiet his crying. "I-i just wanted to be friends, a-and a-and-" he broke into more sobs his shoulders shaking as tears spilled out of his eyes.
"Life's not treating you well huh kid?" The hero started a hand gently resting on his shoulder. "People suck, I'm sure you've learned that already, just don't let it get to your head alright? And you don't want to be friends with people like that anyway." Izuku's tears slowed a bit at his words, maybe the hero was right, maybe Kachan was wrong.
"C-can, can someone without a quirk be a hero?" His voice trembled but he just, he had to know, had to know if everyone else was right, if he really was just a worthless, Deku.
The hero froze taking a few moments before answering. "...Yes, with enough training and will, anyone can be a hero." Izuku broke at the words, tears coming back full force, not out of sadness, but just relief, relief that his dream wasn't impossible like everyone said it was.
The hero fumbled slightly trying to figure out what the best thing to do was. "Hey hey, it's ok? Did I say something wrong?" His voice sounded panicked at Izuku sobbed.
"N-no I just, e-even mama said being a hero was impossible" he forced out wiping tears out of his eyes.
"Oh... Oh kid, I'm sorry I'm the first one to tell you this." Eraserheads voice was softer then Izuku had heard it any of the other times they've meet, and without even thinking he wrapped his arms around the hero tightly
"T-thank you" he whispered ignoring the embarrassment of suddenly hugging the hero. Thankfully the hero only hugged him back a rough but gentle hand ruffling his hair.
"It's no problem kid."
After what felt like forever Eraserhead let the kid go telling him to go home, but he hesitated a hand twitching to stop the kid knowing it would only be a matter of time before he ended up on this roof with the kid.
A few months had passed and dispute Eraserheads words everything just kept getting worse and worse Mama was picking up more and more hours at work and whenever she was home she was just so...tired, some mornings Izuku had to wake her up to bring him to school, those were always the worst days. But good news is that he got a phone for his birthday since Mama was always at work and she needed a way to keep in touch with him. The neighbors stopped agreeing to tell her when he got home after learning about his... condition.
Izuku had a particularly bad day when he took the familiar route to the rooftop seeing Eraserhead's figure already sitting on the ledge head tilting back to look at the boy. Izuku wandered over sitting next to the hero pulling his knees to his chest.
"Mama forgot to pick me up today. She um she said it was because she was caught up at work but um she normally is off when I'm at school." Izuku spoke first, he couldn't hold this in anymore. He just needed to tell someone what happened, Mama wasn't a bad Mama or anything but he just needed to talk about it with someone.
The hero next to him tensed "She what? Kid that's not ok." He said making Izuku frown, Mama was a good mama, she just messed up sometimes, everyone makes mistakes even Mamas.
"Mama just made a mistake, she doesn't do it often." His words only seemed to upset the hero more.
"Parents shouldn't ever forget to pick up their kid, no matter if it's a mistake or not." His voice was firm leaving no room for Izuku to argue, and Izuku did want to argue, but he stayed quiet knowing it was probably best to not go against the hero.
"Your mom seems to leave you alone a lot." The hero sounded casual but Izuku could hear the small accusation in his words.
"Yeah but um she calls me whenever she had to work late shifts most of the time" his voice trailed off with a small frown tugging at his lips, that made mama sound like a bad mama, but she really really wasn't, she just had to work to keep Izuku safe and fed, that made her a good mama.
"You have a phone? What are you like five?" The hero looked over him brows furrowed. Izuku nodded then pouted at the heros words.
"I'm six now" he said his voice sounding more whiny then he intended. Then he took out his phone to show the hero, it wasn't anything special it was mamas old phone and it only had the basic apps with all the others locked.
The hero sighed eyes softening "right six, my mistake." He said taking the phone from Izuku gently, he did a few things Izuku couldn't see before handing the phone back a new contact open with the name Aizawa. "That's my number call it if your mom ever 'forgets' you again, or if it's an emergency."
Izuku stared in shock, he really had a heros phone number in his phone, and he was allowed to call it if he needed help. "Thank you so much Eraserhead!" He said hugging the hero tightly.
"No problem kid, you really need to stop thanking me for basic kindness" the hero sighed ruffling his hair like he had done before.
Like every night Izuku was told to go home and reluctantly he listened going back to the empty apartment and went to sleep.
Izuku had almost forgotten about the phone number for the next few years it sat in his phone his finger hovering over the call button on particularly bad days but he never really called, he didn't want to bother the hero. Izuku was in middle school when his mama had forgotten to pick him up, well she told him he was going to start walking himself to school but today a few of the kids in his class thought it would be funny to push him down the stairs, real good joke huh?
That 'joke' landed him in the nurse with a twisted ankle, it wasn't bad enough to go to the hospital but it hurt to much to walk home. Mama didn't pick up when the nurse called, she didn't pick up the next five times she called either. The nurses kind gaze turned to Izuku pitty clear in her expression.
"Hey kiddo do you have anyone else I can call, a family member or friend that would be able to pick you up?" The nurse asked, Izuku was about to say no when he remembered the heros phone number that had been given for this exact reason he told the nurse the number and watched as the phone rang, once twice and just when he thought the hero wouldn't answer he heard Eraserheads tired grumble come through the phone.
"Hello? Who is this?" His voice sounded like he just woke up, considering he was an underground hero he probably was sleeping.
"Ah Aizawa right? I have Izuku-kun here with a sprained ankle and a few other injuries, are you able to come pick him up?" The response was to quiet for Izuku to hear but based on the nurses smile the hero most likely agreed. She hung up the phone turning to Izuku "alright kiddo your guardian should be here soon, need any help grabbing your stuff so you can go?" Izuku nooded at her words and one of the secretaries was sent off to go grab Izuku's bag from his locker.
Soon enough Eraserhead arrived dressed in casual clothes with his hair tied into a bun, Izuku almost didn't recognize him, almost. The nurse brought him to fill out some forms before letting Izuku go with the man. "If anyone asks you tomorrow about me, I'm your uncle." The man grumbled making Izuku tilt his head.
"My uncle?" Izuku asked wincing when he tried to stand.
"Yeah only family members are allowed to pick kids up from the school, is it alright if I pick you up you shouldn't be walking on a sprained ankle." The hero spoke softly lifting Izuku into his arms when the boy nooded.
"So want to tell me how this happened?" Eraserhead gave him a suspicious glance eyes hovering over a light bruise on his cheek that was sure to get darker over time. Izuku shrugged not meeting the heros gaze.
"Some um some of my classmates pushed me down the stairs, it was apparently a joke but I um, I didn't think it was funny." Izuku hated how upset he was about this, even the teacher had said it was just a joke that was taken a little to far, it wasn't their fault Izuku tripped and just so happened to not catch the railing before the stairs, really it was Izuku's fault for not being able to catch himself.
"That's not ok, kid you know what they did was wrong right?" Izuku felt the heros arms wrap a little tighter around him as he spoked making Izuku frown, it was fine, he only got a little hurt, it really wasn't that bad. After a few minutes of walking in silence Eraserhead seemed to let the topic drop not pushing further.
"Want to get ice cream? If your mom doesn't call by the time we're done your coming back with me to my apartment." Eraserhead spoke, Izuku knew trying to argue to just go to his home instead would be useless, so he just nodded, he hadn't had ice cream in a while anyway.
The walk to the ice cream shop wasn't long, thankfully the shop was pretty empty since most kids were still in school, Eraserhead put Izuku down at one of the tables. "What kind of ice cream do you want?"
"Coffee, please" the last time Izuku had ice cream he had ordered coffee because he wasn't allowed to have real coffee so he thought he found a loophole, he realized there was no real coffee in the ice cream but he still liked it a lot.
The hero laughed at his answer a soft smirk on his face, "good taste kid, I'll be right back don't move." Eraserhead ruffled his hair before walking to the counter ordering two coffee ice creams.
Eraserhead walked back two ice creams in hand handing one over to Izuku, the boy took it happily. "Thank you Eraserhead!" He said savoring the sweet taste of the ice cream knowing how rare it was to be able to have a treat like this.
"Just call me Aizawa kid, I'm not in costume" the hero said starting to eat his own dessert. Izuku nodded with his words grinning at the permission to call his new favorite hero by his civilian name.
They sat there for a bit with some mindless chatter between bites of ice cream, it was mostly Izuku rambling about heros, but Aizawa listened adding in here and there letting the kid go on and on and on until they both were finished with their desserts.
"Any word from your mom?" The man asked not sure what answer he was hopping for, both scenarios were bad in the heros opinion. Izuku took out his phone despite knowing he would notice if he got a text or call from his mama. Nothing like he thought.
"No she um she's probably really busy though I'm sure she'll call me as soon as she gets a break" Izuku wasn't sure if that was true anymore, Mama stopped calling to check in with him a while ago.
"Alright well I'll take you back to my apartment for now then until she calls" Aizawa got up picking Izuku up once more starting the walk to his apartment, he still refused to get a car since Hizashi already had one and he could just ask him if he ever needed a ride somewhere to far to walk.
"Oh yeah my boyfriend will probably be at the apartment so be ready for that, he probably won't mind me bringing you home but he tends to get a little over excited with new people." Izuku nodded along with his words curious who Aizawa boyfriend was but didn't ask since he would find out soon enough.
It wasn't long before they ended up at the apartment building with Aizawa unlocking the door to their apartment. Immediately a tall blond man walked over from what looked like the kitchen, a smile on his face that faltered slightly when his eyes meet Izuku's "um Shou, where did you get the kid from?"
Aizawa just sighed putting Izuku down. "School obviously, he was pushed down the stairs so the nurse called me to pick him up." He explained ruffling Izuku's hair gently, Izuku hesitantly waved at the blond man.
"Shou since when did you have a kid?" The blond seemed more exasperated this time looking between Izuku and Aizawa confused.
Aizawa blinked for a moment before realizing why his boyfriend was confused. "Oh right, this is Izuku I've mentioned him a few times before, he's the kid I keep meeting on that rooftop, I gave him my phone number last time for emergencies." The other man seemed to understand enough for now but still clearly had questions.
"Um h-hi? It nice to meet you" Izuku said quietly eyes looking at anything besides the other mans face.
"Hey kiddo, it's nice to meet you too, I'm Yamada Hizashi, no need to be scared I'm just a little upset Shou here did tell me he was bringing a kid home." Yamadas voice softened as he spoke to Izuku and Izuku couldn't help but relax at the sound of his voice.
"Do you have a voice quirk? Your voice is really nice, that typically happens when someone's quirk alters their voice box in some way." Izuku realized he was rambling and quickly slapped a hand over his mouth ducking his head in shame, normally Kachan or a teacher would tell him how creepy he was or slap him for being weird, but this blond man did nothing like that.
"Yeah I do, that's quite the guess kiddo, your pretty good at that." Yamada said softly smiling. Izuku couldn't help the smile that forced its way into his face.
"Really?" He asked smiling wider when the man nodded.
Izuku startled when his phone started ringing and he quickly scrambled to grab his phone answering it.
"H-hi mama...um yeah one of my friends parents picked me up...yeah the one that let me sleep over a few weeks ago...you um want to talk to him?" Izuku glanced over to Aizawa nervously relaxing when the man held his hand out for the phone with a sigh.
"Hello? Um your the one who picked up my son right?" The woman's tired voice came through the phone, her words sounded concerned but Aizawa could hear the tension in her voice, the heald breath like she's waiting for him to tell her she needed to pick up Izuku or that he caused problems.
"Yes that would be me, speaking of, I'd like to talk to you about that, the nurse said she couldn't get ahold of-" he was cut short by the woman who didn't seem to worried that her son was currently with some stranger as far as she knew.
"Oh good, well I won't be out of work until later so tell Izuku's, Ms.Sasha will check on him when he gets home." The woman was clearly in a hurry to get him off the phone and Aizawa didn't like what that implied one bit.
"Ma'am not to be rude but do you expect me to let your child go home alone?" He tried to hide the anger in his voice but wasn't very successful.
"Izuku's a good kid, my brakes almost over so I'm going to have to let you go, good bye" and with that the woman hung up on him. The mother of the child he had hung up on him, without even asking who he was or why he was allowed to pick up her child.
Aizawa silently handed the phone back to Izuku, Izuku the sweet child that had to call him because his own mother wouldn't pick him up when he was hurt. Aizawa needed to call a few people, this kid couldn't stay in that woman's custody. Not when she was treating him like this.
Izuku pulled on his sleeves nervously "I um should go home now." He said having overheard the conversation on the phone Aizawa looked like he wanted to argue but he hesitated.
"Kid your ankle's still hurt, you shouldn't be alone like this." Aizawa knew he should push harder to keep the kid here, he shouldn't be having to push at all, the kid was hurt and clearly not being taken care of.
"It's ok, mama will probably take the day off tomorrow since I'm hurt, she's done it before." The kid didn't sound sure of himself as he should when talking about a parent being there for him.
"Alright, but if she doesn't I need you to promise to call me, ok?" Aizawa wasn't sure if he was making the right decision, he couldn't force the kid to stay, well he could but still, Izuku wasn't his kid. As much as he wanted to put his foot down and force the kid to stay, he couldn't.
Izuku nodded with a quiet promise muttered out and they were headed back out the door, this time Aizawa has Hizashi's keys in his hands since he didn't want to carry the child across town, even if he was more then able to.
They got to Izuku's apartment fairly quickly and Aizawa helped Izuku to the door not leaving till he heard tiny footsteps fading out into the apartment.
As he sat in the car he wondered what he could have done differently, maybe if he knew a bit more about how to deal with kids in difficult situations he would have handled this differently, maybe he would have never let the kid go that night.
Maybe wasn't what happened though, but it could happen, even if he really hoped there wasn't any more reasons for him to have to be in the kids life, he wanted to help the kid now that he was in his life.
Izuku had just finished his first year of middle school, he wasn't very happy about this like most kids, he just felt numb. Izuku had been feeling numb like this for a while, everything felt too real and to fake at the same time, like he was just floating and watching the world as an outsider. Just floating until a kick or punch brought him back to the moment and he was gasping for breath much to aware of the air going through his lungs and the way his eyes burned with barely contained tears.
But he would never say that, would never say anything about the millions of thoughts running through his mind. Instead he stared off the ledge he had become familiar with over his many years of visiting.
The only difference is that this time there was no hero clad in all black to accompany him. He was alone, for the first time in a while the silence felt foreign, he was used to the silence of his apartment the buzz of electricity being his only company, but this was a different kind of quiet.
The wind brushed past him as he sat there listening to the honks of cars below him, sounds of people living lives much better then his own, lovers wandering into restaurants, over worked business men catching a cab to go home to their families. All people that wouldn't notice if one teenage boy disappeared into the shadows of the night.
Izuku hated that he even entertained that idea, hated how much he wanted to allow himself to indulge in it, to feel the wind whip past his ears as he plummeted twords the earth. Hated that he thought about what it would sound like when his skull hits the concrete, splattering his brains across the ground.
Izuku blinked shocked by his own thoughts, he wouldn't, no he couldn't do that, why couldn't he. Well Izuku couldn't answer that, but he's sure there was a reason, one just one reason that's all he needed.
Soft footsteps landed behind him and Izuku jumped, not realizing how close he was to the edge until he felt his foot slip, and for a moment just a moment he thought he was going to die. Then a white strip of fabric was pulling him back onto the roof and he hit into someone.
The person was clutching him tightly their hands shaking as the pressed him close to their chest. Izuku could hear their heartbeat beating faster then it should be, Izuku almost died, as much as that scared him he was more afraid that he had just accepted it. When he started falling he hadn't started yelling or crying he only, relaxed.
"Kid, never, ever do that again." A rough voice came from the person hugging him that Izuku was now realizing was Aizawa.
"I-i... I'm sorry" he whispered hugging the man back like he was the only thing keeping him alive. "I'm sorry Aizawa, I really, really don't mean to. I'm sorry." His voice broke a bit with each word as he realized what he was about to do, what he was thinking of doing for so long, realized how selfish it was to people like Aizawa who wasted their time on a nobody like Izuku.
"Kid shh it's ok, hey everything is ok, you don't have to apologize, just please never do this again." Aizawa's voice was trembling, dispite his calming voice Izuku couldn't help but notice that he sounded scared, scared for Izuku? Scared he could have died? Izuku couldn't decipher what that meant at the moment.
Hands moved to his cheeks wiping stray tears from his eyes, Izuku hadn't even realized when he started crying, but he couldn't seem to stop now that he started.
They stayed like that for a few minutes, almost an hour went by before Izuku finally stopped crying. Aizawa reluctantly pulled back from the hug only enough to see the kids face, it was tears stained and there was definitely some snot on his jumpsuit that he'd have to wash off latter but the kid was alive, and that's all that mattered right now.
"Why don't we get off this roof. Is your mother home?" He already knew the answer but he had to check.
"N-no mamas working late tonight." Izuku rubbed his eyes pulling his sleeve up to wipe his face.
"Alright is there anything you'll need from your apartment, I'm taking you home for the night." He explained gently silently relieved when the kid didn't panic at his words.
"No um actually will I um be staying with you for a while?" Izuku asked as smart as he was he was able to put together what the hero was planning on doing.
Aizawa hesitated for a moment mentally thinking about how he should go about this before nodding "yes you will be staying for quite a while."
"O-ok um I might need a few things then." Izuku said wiping the last few tears away allowing Aizawa to help him up, not letting go as he walked next to the hero to his apartment leading the man inside.
Aizawa's stomach turned at what was inside of the apartment, a horrible stench hit his nose before he really saw where it was coming from but when he did he almost threw up. Piles of dishes were in and around the sink moldy and rotten food still on some of the plates along with trash bags that were filled to the brim scattered around the kitchen.
He resisted the urge to cover his nose as the kid lead him further into the apartment into what Aizawa assumed was his room, the only clean room in the apartment. On his way Aizawa noticed the living room in a similar state of filth as the rest of the apartment. Half empty bottles of alcohol were on and around the coffee table some on their sides with liquid still in them.
This was no place for anyone to live nevermind a child. And Aizawa saw no sign of an adult other than the bottles of alcohol, no sign that anyone has even thought about the kid who was left in this biohazard of an apartment.
"I'm all packed." A quiet voice broke him out of his thoughts and he looked back to the small child who was clutching a backpack filled with what Aizawa could assume was the kids whole life, the room behind the kid looked empty, if it weren't for the occasional action figure or kids drawing Aizawa wouldn't be able to tell it was ment to be a kids room.
"Alright come on, let's get out of here." Aizawa couldn't move quicker as he left that building. They walked in silence as they made their way back to Aizawa's apartment. It was only when they were halfway home that Aizawa thought to call Hizashi, remembering the last time he had done this and the lecture he had gotten from the blond about bringing home random kids.
His boyfriend thankfully was understanding after Aizawa explained what he saw, he couldn't help but relax as he listened to his boyfriend cuss out the woman that was supposed to be Izuku's mom. He hummed along as his boyfriend spoke, despite the situation it was nice to know the other man would care about Izuku just as much as Aizawa already did.
The kid thankfully didn't seem to be listening to the conversation, he was probably still processing what was happening. Aizawa reluctantly ended the conversation with Yamada promising to talk more once they were home and the kid was safe before hanging up. The call had only lasted a few minutes but Aizawa was still a bit concerned that Izuku hadn't said a word the whole time he was on the phone.
The kid was staring into space when Aizawa finally turned to talk to him and Aizawa paused slightly. He knew that look, it was the same one Hizashi had on particularly bad days. The kid was disassociating, he honestly should have been expecting this with how much Izuku has gone through.
He stopped walking couching down in front of Izuku.
"Hey kid can you look at me? Just for a few moments." He asked softening his voice in a way that was normally only reserved for Hizashi. Thankfully green eyes slowly meet his still a bit unfocused but better.
"Good, that's really good Izuku, can you tell me what my name is?" He needed to take this slow, figure out how far gone the kid was and plan accordingly.
"E-eraserhead" Izuku whispered out his voice cracking on a way that made Aizawas heart clench.
"Yeah Eraserhead works, but can you tell me my real name kid?" He pushed gently waiting patiently for the kids response. He frowned a bit when the kid after opening and closing his mouth a few times shook his head.
"Alright that's ok, is that because you can't remember what my real name is?" He asked, he recalled a few nights where Hizashi would completely break down, he remembered the first few times and how difficult it had been for him to figure out what the blond had needed from him, thankfully he eventually learned asking short yes or no questions worked best. He just hoped it would work the same now.
The kid shook his head again and Aizawa quickly thought of the next option. "So you know what my name is, that's really good kid, your doing really good. Is the reason you couldn't answer me before because you can't talk right now?" Hizashi had a hard time vocalizing what he wanted when he got this bad, it wasn't hard to assume the kid was the same way.
A small nod confirmed his suspicions. "Ok, thank you for letting me know, your doing so good, is it ok if I touch you, I'm just going to hug you if you let me ok?" He asked, he knew it helped Hizashi if he asked before touching him and said what he was going to do. He was really thankful for Hizashi right now, without the experience he only would have pushed the kid into a panic attack.
Izuku nooded and Aizawa wrapped his arms around him gently not pulling him into the hug or holding to tightly in case he changed his mind. "Is this ok?" He asked to make sure the kid was comfortable relaxing at the small nod he got in return.
It took a few moments but eventually Aizawa pulled away meeting Izuku's gaze "alright kid we should get to the apartment, I'm sure Hizashi is already starting to get worried, would you like to hold my hand while we walk?" He asked being sure to all give Izuku the option. He gently took Izuku's hand when the kid nodded, and began to stand up.
After they reached the apartment Aizawa lead Izuku in helping him take off his shoes as Hizashi entered the room "hey kid welcome back, I heard your staying a while this time" voice was so gentle and loving, and it just reminded Aizawa of how lucky he was to have this man in his life.
The kid nodded shyly and Hizashi gave Aizawa a look. "The kid diassociated a bit earlier, he's currently non verbal." He whispered to his boyfriend thankfully the other didn't ask any questions. Then he lead Izuku to the guest room, making sure the kid was all set before leaving with a quiet "night kid."
When he walked back into the room Hizashi was running his hand through his hair in that way he always did when he was deep in thought. Aizawa pulled his boyfriend into his arms gently kissing his cheek.
"Hey, he's going to be alright, we can handle having a kid, weren't you the one who started the adoption talk a few months ago?" He asked voice softer than normal feeling the blond relaxing into his hold.
"I know but still. Sho the kid is clearly traumatized, are you sure we can handle this?" His wonderful amazing boyfriend asked and Aizawa sighed because of course they could.
"Of course, we got through everything else life has thrown at us, I'm sure you'll be an amazing father." He reassured letting them just sit in silence for a bit.
The night was quite after that with small talks about what to do next, and how they were going to be able to just adopt the kid when he still had a mother, no matter how horrible she was.
But that all was a pro for tomorrow, tonight they had their kid home and safe, and not on a rooftop. And everything was fine, so Aizawa let himself fall asleep without a worry because everything was fine, all his loved ones were safe and he wouldn't have to worry about a certain child on a roof.
Everything else could be delt with tomorrow.
