Work Text:
"oh my god. i love her."
the words that left roseanne park's mouth surprised herself.
falling for the kim jennie? the one who treated her as a sister figure, the one who publicly shown affection to her, the one who she treated as her best friend?
it wasn't possible.
yet rosé had never blushed so much when jennie kissed her cheek, butterflies fluttering wildly in her stomach.
park chaeyoung had never been more in love.
weeks went by until rosé finally mustered up enough courage to confess to jennie. it was well, fuckin' terrifying. she was particularly jumpy that day, flinching at every miniscule sound.
jennie noticed her strange behaviour.
"hey rosie, are you okay? you seemed... off today."
"um." rosé hesitated, taking a deep breath as she felt her heart beat faster and faster, her cheeks subconsciously heating up.
god, i must look like a fool to her.
"so there's a thing i've been meaning to tell you. jennie... i think i love you." rosé blushed, avoiding jennie's intense gaze.
"yeah, i love you too, rosie." jennie smiled as she brushed a stray strand of hair off rosé's face.
"what?"
"why wouldn't i love you? we've been best friends since forever."
"i- i meant- in-" rosé awkwardly stiffened her posture, clearly embarassed.
"oh." jennie stared, her monotone voice scaring rosé.
rosé's hopeful eyes looked into jennie's neutral ones: what she could see was not a girl madly in love with her. what she could see was not what she dreamed of. what she could see were not reciprocal feelings.
at that moment, she knew.
she was friend-zoned.
"never mind, i'm.. yeah i'm okay."
"okay, sounds great." the tone of jennie's voice didn't match her words.
they continued their movie marathon, but without the usual sarcastic remarks on random characters, hysterical sobbing at characters' deaths and squealing when the main leads kissed.
the tension was so thick it could be cut by a knife.
i've ruined everything, rosé thought bitterly. their friendship could clearly never return to normal.
kim jennie, surprise, i love you.
the shift in their relationship was recognised by both girls. rosé would wear fancy clothes, put on a truckload of makeup for a casual sleepover, sometimes even subconsciously flirting with jennie.
and jennie noticed the obvious change.
and she despised it.
all jennie wanted was her dorky best friend back, where they could do nothing, just chilling on the couch, talking about everything and anything they could think of. from diabolical debates of how dogs were better than humans, who was dating who, crazy fan theories about the kdramas they binge-watched together-
jennie had never missed her best friend more.
but she didn't like rosé that way. not once, not twice, never.
and jennie's heart splintered for rosé.
she wished she could tell rosé that she loved her, she wished she could tell rosé they could spend the rest of their lives in love, she wished she could tell rosé that everything would be okay.
but she couldn't. because it wasn't true.
this went on for a few months, until rosé couldn't take it anymore.
she talked to jennie about it.
"i've decided to move on from you. we're going to fix our friendship."
"please, i've never missed you so much in my life."
and from that day onwards, roseanne park didn't doll herself up for jennie.
she was just... herself.
but when jennie saw rosé being rosé, she realised something.
"oh my god, i love her."
she loved the way rosé would flip her hair around, all messed up, not giving a shit about what people thought of her. she loved the way rosé would smile at her, making sure her promise of being only friends would be true. she loved the way rosé would grab morning coffee for her, even though she insisted she was fine.
and kim jennie had never been so in love.
i have to tell her.
jennie paced around her room, her complicated feelings dwelling in her head.
but i can't. i broke her heart.
"UGH!" jennie plopped herself on her bed, relishing in the feeling of the cool bedsheets on her skin.
no use hiding it, i guess.
she texted rosé to meet up at their favorite restaurant.
but when she arrived, she saw someone else talking to rosé.
"hi, jennie! this is kim jisoo, she's a new intern at my company!" rosé's cheerful tone stabbing jennie straight in the soul.
her confession was too late.
roseanne park was in love, once again. but this time, she wasn't in love with jennie.
jisoo. jennie could feel the love radiating from rosé when she looked at jisoo with her dark, brown eyes.
because rosé used to look at jennie that way.
jennie smiled painfully, as her heart broke into a million pieces. she wished she had never rejected rosé, she wished she had never friend-zoned rosé and most of all, she wished she could tell rosé those three words- i love you.
but it would be selfish to tell her all this when she had found someone else, someone better, someone prettier.
and so, jennie swallowed her words, allowing the sting to swim through her entire body.
"hi, jisoo." she said through clenched teeth, fists balling up. neither jisoo or rosé noticed her furious glare or the way her eyes teared up. they were too busy, lost in each other's eyes.
as jennie tucked herself in bed that night, she devastatingly thought of the future she could've had with rosé.
she spent the night crying in her bed, her heart tore up into a billion pieces.
park chaeyoung, surprise, i love you.
