Work Text:
Valere snuck off after dinner. She headed over to where the kitchen was and snuck one of the smaller knives into her bag before running to the secret hideout where a stick she stashed was.
She tended to finish eating faster than Zale and Garl who took their time and engaged in conversations. Due to this she wouldn't get any nagging about stealing the knife.
She sat down with the stick in hand and pressed the blade to the wood. She had seen it done before, the adults would often carve little wooden toys for the kids. She had watched this progress before and for some reason decided that she could totally do the same and make a cool weapon.
She pressed down the blade into the wood and shaved a few pieces off. “This takes so long. I wonder…” she pressed the knife more firmly into the wood, however this knife was meant for wood work, and was the wrong size for Valere to shave large chunks off, so when she pulled it didn't budge. So instead she pulled toward herself, now the knife did come free, but it was at an alarming speed.
Her other hand came up to block it and before she realized what happened she felt a large stinging pain on her hand. Against her better judgment she screamed.
It wasn't a very loud scream, only loud enough to be heard over the waves by anyone passing above.
“Valere!” Her eyes widened at the sound of Zale's voice. She quickly pushed the stick and wood shavings away and hid the knife in her bag, hand hiding behind her back.
“Valere are you ok?” Garl asked in a panicked tone as he and Zale came down into the hideout.
“Uh yeah just tripped…” she mumbled, avoiding eye contact.
“Are you sure? I don't think I've ever heard you scream, especially just from a trip.” Zale said, rushing up to her and grabbing her arm.
“Valere your bleeding!” Garl took notice of a few drops that dripped to the ground.
“Oh heheh…” she pulls her hand out from behind her back. “Would ya look at that…”
“Valere. That's not from falling…” Garl muttered and grabbed her hand. “This looks kinda like when someone slips with a knife…”
Zales eyes were wide and full of tears “Valere… why were you hiding this! This probably hurts so badly! We need to tell erlina she can-”
“No! I wasn't supposed to take a knife, I know that! I just wanted to try to carve… they made it look easy enough…” valere muttered as Garl started to look through his bag. “If we go to her she's gonna tell the others and I'm gonna be in trouble.”
“It was an accident…” Garl muttered “you're lucky I have a roll of gauze. I'll stay quiet for now but I'm not gonna if this happens again.” He started wrapping her hand.
“And you're lying your way out of this one I'm not gonna be thrown under the bus with you this time!” Zale frowned.
