If there was one thing Bas would never complain about, it was being near Mar. Since the first day the pirate had washed aboard their ship, Bas had taken a liking to them. To their wavy brown hair, to their dark skin, to their intriguing tattoos. Everything about Mar was intoxicating. The only problem, however; was that Mar should complete disinterest in Bas. Bas would do absolutely anything to change their mind.
Let alone the fact that Bas order about six cups of café a day, he tried to do anything to get Mars attention. His favorite, by far, was complimenting Mar while they were wearing Bas's clothes. Bas would lean close, smirk lightly, and whisper in Mars ear "You look excellent in my clothes." And, sure, Bas may have been wondering what they looked like without any clothes on, but that was besides the point.
Mars face would redden, but their eyes would flash annoyance, they would lean away and not respond. And although Mar never responded, Bas reveled in the slight blush that fell over their cheeks.
Bas often tried to run into Mar on "accident". Often, Bas spent more time trying to spend time with Mar, than actually spending time with them. Each time Bas approached them Mar didnt outright reject him, but their distaste was clear. Bas didnt take it to heart, though, he knew about Mars familia, and he knew it was probably hard for them to adjust to their new life.
So when the crew of La Ana docked on the shore and Bas saw Mar talking and laughing with Tito, he thought maybe Mar was acclimated, and Bas could try again. He invited Mar to go get food with him, and Mar seemed hesitant, "I dont need a guide, you know." They spoke. Bas knew that, Mar was resourceful, they didnt need Bas at all.
Eventually, though, Mar gave in and together they went out to dinner. Walking back, they stumbled upon a destroyed temple of some sorts. Mar went quiet, not that they'd been especially loud before, but regardless the point still stands, their hand reached out to the wall and traced over it lightly. Bas stepped forward slightly, "I was doing some research and your tattoos kind of look like these temples."
Mar jumped at Bas's voice, almost forgetting he was there. "Hmm."
Bas noticed Mars hand had dropped, "are they supposed to mean something?"
Mar sighed, "I got them done in the area, that's probably why." So Mar was still closed off. Cool. Bas could wait.
Bas waited until they were about to be captured, their wet, slimy clothes hanging to their bodies, their lips trembling. Bas waited until then, before he slid his hand into Mars. Surprisingly, Mar didnt move away, instead they leaned in a little bit. Bas reveled in the feeling. Until, they were caught of course.
When Bas saw Mars powers he freaked out. Not because they were scary or that they looked like a monster, but because they were beautiful. Because they could save Bas with a touch of their hand. It was more than beautiful, it was hot. Bas tried not to think of it.
Later, when Bas and Mar were fulfilling their plan to break La Anas crew out of El Morro, and Mar was scaring the shit out of a guard that Bas didnt care enough to remember to name of, Bas thought the same thing. Mar was hot. They were crouched over the drunken guard, their fire twinkling between their fingers. Their eyes were full of a spark Bas had never seen before. Before he knew what happened, the guard was knocked out and they were moving again, and Bas lost the chance to tell them his thought.
Before Mar was set to kill El Diablo, they sat in their inn room. Mar was explaining the plan again, as if Bas hadn't been there for it. And Bas couldn't help but smile. "When this is all done, I cant wait to be with the crew again." Bas spoke.
Mar finally looked up, they smiled as well, then it faded, "...yeah. If this all gets done then-"
Bas cut them off quickly, "When. You are strong enough to kick this devils ass. You got this."
Mar looked at Bas closely, "in case one of us doesnt make it back i want to say-"
Bas cut them off again putting a finger over their lips, "Shh. We're making it put of this. Tell me when its over."
Bas wasn't so sure they'd win after seeing El Diablo. But, eventually he was nothing but bones in the sea and Mar looked incredible. After freeing La Ana, Bas and Mar sat side by side on the beach, the sun just beginning to rise.
Bas had so many questions, he began before realizing, he never got to hear what Mar was going to say. "What were you going to say?"
Mar looks over to him confused, "hmm?" They hummed.
"Before we went to tavern, you said you had to tell me something."
Mars face broke into a grin, "I think what I was going to say was that youre not totally... insufferable."
Bas's mouth opened wide, "you mean i fought for that? I thought you were going to say something including the words alluring or intoxicating or handsome."
"Definitely not alluring."
"What is this? I thought I would be fighting El Diablo to get a heartfelt confess-" this time it was Mar cutting him off. Their lips crashed together, gently but with wanting. Bas hummed softly, and then Mar was pulling away. Bas chased it slightly but caught himself.
Bas could only imagine the state of his face, he was sure Mar was about to say something before their eyes flashed behind Bas. He turned around, "is that..?"
Mar jumped up and ran to the man, "papa!" They threw themselves into the man's arms. Bas followed behind.
This was a life Bas could get behind. Mar at his side. His familia on his ship. And the Spaniards good and delt with.
That night, they boarded a new ship, La Ana had been destroyed, and together, all as one familia, they rode the sea. Down in his room, Bas waited for Mar. He stepped out of his quarters and entered the crews quarters. He saw Mar laying on their cot, their eyes facing the ceiling. Bas moved quietly and reached Mars cot. "Mar." He whispered.
Mars eyes shot towards Bas, hed obviously been quieter than he thought.
"Come here." He whispered and Mars face shone with confusion. Mar got up, and quietly followed Bas out of the crews quarters.
Mar continued to be confused, "does el capitan need me or something?" They asked.
Bas rolled his eyes, "no, i need you, come sleep with me."
Mars face turned red instantly, their eyes grew wide, "the crew will wake up and wonder where i went."
"They'll know where you went, come on." Bas beckoned them to his room and finally Mar gave in.
"Okay." He sighed and followed Bas to his quarters. When they entered, Bas climbed into his bed and got under the covers, patting the place next to him. "You're lucky you're cute." Mar grumbled and joined him, locking their fingers together under the sheets.
Bas leaned his face towards Mars and kissed them gently, "goodnight Mar."
Mar was flushed red, but smiled goofily. "Goodnight Bas." Then they set their head on Bas's shoulder and fell asleep. Whatever awaited them in the future may be difficult, but they would handle it with ease, as long as they were together.
