Chapter Text
Kaito didn’t want to admit it, but he was having second thoughts. Him and Maki had gotten so heated at the time he felt like he could do anything, however, staring at the small bottles all lined up neatly along the table in Angie’s basement, he was hesitant. Kaito wasn’t necessarily a lightweight, but despite all his talk he had hardly taken more than a few sips of alcohol before this night. His gaze shifted up to the girl across from him and red eyes that felt sharper than any actual blade stared back. She looked terrifying, and terrified. Come to think of it, he hadn’t really pegged her as the kind to stay out late partying and getting wasted.
At this point they had already committed, no backing out now. How did this even start? Yesterday the two were discussing their workout routines with Shuichi and Kokichi happened to stumble upon them. Of course it was him.
--
“So like, who’s stronger?”
“Excuse me?” Maki turned her attention slightly downward to the boy with the devilish grin.
“Y’know, like if you both got into a fight, who’d win?” Kokichi asked, eyeing the two of them.
“That’s a dumb question, everybody has their strengths and weakn-”
“Me, obviously!” Kaito chimed in happily. Maki turned to him, astonished.
“Are you serious?”
“What? I mean, no offense Maki roll, but y’know I’m stronger cuz-”
“Because what? Because you’re a guy?” Maki questioned, trying not to let her death glare slip out.
“What? No! Because I train more! I’m always at the gym and half the time you bail on our workouts!” Kaito scolded.
“Guys, please–” Shuichi tried to intervene but they continued to talk as if he wasn’t even there.
“Sometimes I like to train alone. Is that a problem for you? God sometimes it’s like you can’t be without me and Shuichi” Maki scowled.
“Sorry I actually like to be around people instead of just shutting myself in my room the whole day like some emo freak!”
Shuichi turned to Kokichi with an anxious look on his face. “Why did you ask that?”
“I thought it’d be funny” The deviant shrugged.
All the while the two continued to bicker, their insults growing increasingly more petty and stupid. Maki began to speak incredibly fast and Kaito couldn’t keep up, his head growing hot and he was just about to storm out of the room but someone grabbed his arm– Kokichi.
“Aw c’mon, you guys are acting like babies!” He chuckled, “Why don’t you challenge one another to something? I heard Angie’s having a party tomorrow night”
“So?” Maki rolled her eyes. Kaito got an idea. A stupid one.
“How about we see who can down the most shots?” He confidently proposed.
“And how would that prove who’s stronger?”
“Easy! The strongest one will last longer!”
--
Kaito hated the way Maki crossed her arms like she was better than everyone else, and Maki hated the stupid smug expression that bore Kaito’s face when she knew he had no idea what he was talking about. He wasn’t usually one for alcohol, wanting to appear as healthy as possible, and he CERTAINLY had never taken a shot in his life. Though, neither had she. Each determined to make the other one admit they were wrong, they shook hands and agreed with more intensity than necessary. And so here they were, glasses poured by the very talented (and one of the few who was sober) Kirumi. Kaito pushed back his anxiety of getting so drunk he’d puke as he grabbed the first glass and swung his head back.
“Holy– FUCK!” He grabbed his throat almost immediately. It felt like it was on fire. Maybe he wasn’t cut out for this after all, the pain caused tears to start welling in his eyes and his lip trembled.
Just as Kaito was about to call it quits he noticed Maki eyeing him up and down. She seemed confident, like she was reading him, like she figured he’d stop early. She always had a higher tolerance for pain. She picked up a glass and took a swig without even flinching. He knew it was affecting her, but she hardly showed any signs. She smirked. It did something to him. There was no way he could back down. Now it was competitive. Shots were being down quicker and quicker by the second to the point Kriumi had issues refilling the glasses without them being snatched out of her hand.
“Hah…give up?” Maki slurred, blindly grabbing for another drink.
“Pfft, you wish!” Kaito spat back.
“I had no idea these virgins had it in them! Woo go Maki!” Miu cheered from the small crowd of students watching them.
“Surprised nobody’s dropped dead yet” Rantaro exclaimed through his smoke.
“Pleeeeease” Kaito giggled, “If anyone's gonna drop dead, it’ll be her!” He lazily pointed an accusatory finger towards the girl across him barely keeping herself standing.
“Yeah right..idiot…stupid idiot” Was all Maki could muster.
“Gonta think maybe they’ve had enough”
Per the bug lovers suggestion, Kirumi went to begin putting away the alcohol. Kaito attempted to block her from getting to the stairs, but in his drunken state he was about as effective at being a barricade as a block of jello. Shuichi stepped forward and collected Kaito and Maki as if they were two toddlers falling asleep.
“Let’s go, you two” He sighed.
Maki clung to Shuichi and began whispering to herself, “He’s so stupid, so wreckless…always so stupid…”
--
Shuichi caught up to Maki as she sped down the hallway on the way back to her dorm.
“Maki, you know Kokichi was just teasing you, and Kaito would never say something to hurt y-”
“I know. But this has actually been going on for a while. He acts like he’s so tough when I’ve seen him give up after a few push ups” Maki asserted.
“That’s just how he is! I know you don’t like parties, so I wouldn’t want you to put yourself in an uncomfortable position or anything” Shuichi desperately reasoned, picturing a shitfaced girl who happened to be really good with knives.
“I’m doing it Shuichi. I’m gonna teach him a lesson and make him look like an idiot”
--
Shuichi practically crashed into Angie’s room, trying not to knock over her various religious figurines, candles, and framed sorority posters. Kaito was a giggling mess, face red as a candied apple and his beard a little damp from sweat. Maki was silent, the infamous glare in her eyes, her face red but the rest of her skin flushed of all color.
He pushed the two against the bed and made sure they were conscious enough to prop themselves up. He looked like he wanted to say something, but before he could–
“Yo, Angie’s callin your name, get on the dancefloor!” Kokichi stood by the door, a cup of something purple spilling onto his hand.
“Can she wait?” Shuichi tensed up.
“Atua says ‘no way!’ so you better get down there before divine intervention gets you or whatever” The purple haired devil slurred.
“Okay okay, will you two be okay here?” Shuichi turned to his training partners.
“Tooootally” Kaito spewed.
“Just please stay alive…and don’t puke on anything Atua-related”
With that Shuichi hesitantly left with Kokichi to his doom, he knew Angie danced like a crazy person when she had one too many drinks. He was mainly nervous about Maki, what if she decided to put Kaito into a playful chokehold after he said something stupid and accidentally suffocated him? It had happened before. He shut the door behind him, leaving Maki and Kaito sitting against a bed in a room only lit by candles and a few fairy lights. Angie always had a way with interior design.
Kaito glanced over to Maki. God, in moments like this he remembered how beautiful she was. Even looking like she was on the verge of hurling, sweat dripping off her skin, discolored cheeks, hair damp and frizzy, she was like an angel to him. A cold, knife-wielding angel. He had always thought of her as pretty ever since they met, but he thought of himself as the kind to appreciate women’s beauty a lot, so he paid no mind. As they got closer though, the thoughts just wouldn’t leave his mind. As for Maki, she knew she liked Kaito a few weeks ago. He was an idiot; a kindhearted, always helping out others, believing until it got him hurt, idiot. In all her life she had never met someone so genuinely sweet even if it caused them to be a little stupid sometimes.
People looked out for themselves where she grew up. Not Kaito. He always looked out for her and Shuichi. Even when he was sick or in pain he hid it so as not to worry anybody. How could she hate someone like that? As gross as they both looked right now she wanted to…wanted to…
“Mmph?” Kaito exclaimed, feeling lips pressing onto his and weight pressing onto his lap. Maki had climbed on top of him, and was giving gentle kisses to his lips and cheeks. “Maki roll…what’re y–” She didn’t let him finish, instead kissing into him harder, holding his head captive with her cold slender fingers.
He interlocked his fingers with hers and returned the kiss. For a while they just pressed against each other, but Maki felt the confidence streaming through her blood and slid her tongue into his mouth, exploring every corner and running it over his teeth like she needed to memorize his insides. Even when drunk she was precise. Kaito was shocked at first but gladly reciprocated, wresting his tongue with hers in an attempt to establish himself as the dominant one. He was sloppy of course so he didn’t win, but he persisted. Maki opened her eyes for a split second and the sight of Kaito blushing, eyes lidded with pleasure made her feel all hot inside. The feeling wasn’t familiar, but it was welcome. She grinded her hips into his, kissing more aggressively and pulling on his spiky hair.
Maki didn’t know what she wanted most of the time, but she wanted him. All of him. She wanted to keep drunkenly kissing this idiot until they were both old and gray. Kaito could feel himself getting hard, he just prayed Maki wouldn’t notice, he didn’t wanna seem like a douche. It couldn’t be helped, every kiss was perfect, the way she took control but was still so delicate and gentle, careful not to actually hurt him. She was a big softie inside and he was the only one who could truly see that side of her. Though Kaito wanted the rest of the world to see the real Maki, he kind of enjoyed having her all to himself, being the one who got to talk about deep emotions late at night on the phone with her.
“F-fuck…” He groaned into her while they continued passionately. Maki didn’t speak. She couldn’t. She was incredibly embarrassed about making such a bold move, but no way in hell would she stop now. “Maki roll..hold on a second…”
He weakly pushed her away and took her beauty in for a second. She wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“W-what’s wrong?” She whispered, eyes glued to the ground.
“Nothing…nothing is wrong..I just wanted to…” Kaito huffed.
“Wanted to what?”
“Say I’m sorry. The stuff I said…I didn’t–”
“I know. You’re a good guy” Maki exclaimed, her eyes trailing up Kaito’s chest, “I’m sorry I said you can’t be without us…”
“Aw, it’s okay Maki roll” Kaito grinned and patted her head gently.
“No it’s not okay…because I..I can’t be without you” She turned the other cheek when the words finally left her mouth. Maki hated it. She hated this, being so vulnerable, she could only think about her classmates teasing her to no end. About Kokichi’s shit-eating grin whenever he spotted the two hanging out alone.
She thought Kaito would be more surprised, his mouth cartoonishly agape and his eyes widening as far as they could. He’d have no idea how to react, how to comprehend this confession she just made, but instead he just smiled. Not a drunk smile, or a lustful one, but a soft warm smile that could melt Maki’s heart.
“I know Maki roll”
“You know?” Maki turned to him, flustered.
“You might not think so, but you wear your heart on your sleeve,” Kaito giggled.
“I do not!”
“Then how did I figure out youuuu” He slurred, “have had a crush on me?”
“W-what? How did you–”
“You’re so silly, c’mere” Kaito pulled Maki back in for another sloppy kiss, though this time he was in control. Maki was completely caught off guard which gave him the opportunity to guide them through the kissing this time, exploring her mouth and seeing what made her twitch. She gave in and melted into him, letting all her weight onto him like she could turn to water at any moment. Maki wanted this moment to last forever.
“O-oh! Gonta sorry! Gonta looking for bathroom!” A buff figure barged in and quickly shut the door, apologizing profusely.
The lovebirds separated for a moment to gaze at the door, but quickly went back to what they were doing. Neither Kaito nor Maki knew what they were doing but they continued experimenting through the night. Shuichi was supposed to be the designated driver, but Angie encouraged him to just go back home.
“But I really shouldn’t leave them here-” He protested.
“They can stay in my room as long as they like! Atua encourages love no matter the form!” Angie cheered as she gently pushed him out of her house. “Besides, Gonta said they were very busy hehe”
“Excuse me?” Shuichi was now incredibly flustered. He knew his gym mates totally had a thing for one another but this seemed out of character. Who had made the first move? Was it Maki? It was probably Maki.
