Chapter 1: A terrible day

Chapter Text

It was a nice day. The sun was casting beautiful golden rays on the white snow, the clouds were nowhere to be found, and a gentle breeze was dancing all around him. It was really chilly. Kageyama doesn't mind walking to school. Especially when it's to practice. He could live just fine without school, though. His face was home to a scowl despite all this, though. Is it the school part of the day? Probably. Actually- definitely. He hears loud footsteps. Or is it running? His curiosity was peaked and so he decided to look over his shoulder to see a small male with a vibrant blob of orange hair that was flying in every direction, sprinting towards him. His first thought was: “I won't let you win, dumbass!“  and he started sprinting too.

“Ha! I win! That's 158 for me and 157 for you!“  The vibrant smile of this sunshine made his heart beat faster. Kageyama reached for his head to check for a fever, but his temperature was normal.

“You got a headstart so it doesn't count!“ He raised his voice, but Hinata knew it all too well

“Oh, please! You are just jealous of how fast I am!“ His smile turned into a devilish grin that could melt the whole Antarctica. On the other hand, Kageyama´s scowl deepened even further. He doesn't like losing. Especially not to Hinata.

They finally headed inside. Sugawara was already changing, while Tanaka was kinda just talking about Kiyoko and how stunning she is. Kageyama never got the hype about Kiyoko. She is pretty. He can´t deny that, but romance is just not his thing. It takes time away from volleyball, and that is just bad. How much time could people spend practicing if they didn't go out on dates? The only time he is willing to go out with someone is when it is with his teammate/s and it will make their bond stronger, which will improve volleyball. At least thatś what Suga said. He doesn't have a reason not to trust Sugawara. He is way better with this stuff than Kageyama himself. Sugawara most likely said it just to get Kageyama to hang out with them, but honestly, it had some logic to it.

When he finally realized he was thinking that most of the people were already out. Even Hinata had left without him. He probably got caught up talking to someone. Not surprising. Hinata is a scatterbrain after all. He laced up his shoes and made his way to the gym.

“I was about to ask someone to get you. What took you so long? Start stretching before the coach comes.“  Daichi´s hands were at his hips. He had always been the dad of Karasuno. Besides, he scolds him all the time. That´s why Kageyama wasn't surprised at all and just nodded and stretched.

The practice went smoothly and was way quicker than he had hoped for. Now comes the part he hates. School. School is such a stupid thing! Whoever made school deserves to rot in hell! Why cant the whole day just be practice? Who even needs English anyway! Itś not like he will be going to England! If he is going to play on the world stage, he will go to Poland, Italy, or something! School is just a way to torture human beings! Tsukishima definitely just pretends he doesn't mind school because he is annoying and wants to feel superior, even thought its just annoying.

“Kageyama? Do you want to have a sleepover or hang out or something?“  Kageyama looked down at the source of the voice. Oh, it's just Hinata. Since when has he walking to class? He didn't even notice. Hinata was fidgeting with his fingers, the tips of his ears turning into the color of the Japanese national menś uniform.

“When?“ He asked, completely oblivious to the hidden meaning behind it

“Dunno, maybe like... Sunday?“ Hinata said. He was acting weird. Maybe he was also sick. Maybe Hinata caught whatever Kageyama has. Now that he thinks about it, his heart is beating again. He should rest and get better. Though... they do have a practice match with Nekoma tomorrow. He still should rest after afternoon practice.

“I don't feel like it.“  Sugawara told him something about this, but he can´t remember what... well, if he can´t remember it cant be important.

Kageyama sat in class. His first class was math. He doesn't understand anything, but he doesn't bother listening either. What catches his attention better than the teacher is the window. Looking out of the window is more interesting than whatever a math teacher can be. He could see a tree outside. The one he sits with Hinata under every lunch before they finish their food and go play. Maybe Hinata has curry. He would like curry right now. Hinata would share, right? Maybe if he traded something. What does he have? Right! He remembered to bring Tamako kake Gohan. The rice is a bit burnt, though. He doesn't even know how he managed that. For some reason, he has been spacing out a lot lately.

The rest of the day was a blur. He doesn't even know what he did in practice. He really has to be sick! How can someone not remember practice?! He took the dirty clothes out of his bag and put them into the laundry, and took a shower. He came out minutes later with a towel and sat down at his desk. He looked at his journal. What is he supposed to write down? He doesn't remember what he did during practice! He is staring at the pages. How terrible is he getting if even volleyball fails him? If this continues, he will have to ask someone to diagnose him. He cant be this distracted during volleyball of all things! He decides to write some general stuff there. Not that it makes him happy or anything, but what can he do?

His head hit the pillow. Today was a terrible day. He should just sleep on it. It will get better tomorrow. He looks up and sighs. His eyelids feel heavy. He didn't even start solo practice, yet the only thing he can think about is “Let me sleep, “ and so he lets sleep overtake him.
