Checkmate

Summary:

Spock and Jamie play chess

Notes:

Day 2 of Febyuri: Shared Hobby

Work Text:

The captain's quarters were quiet save for the soft hum of the Enterprise and the occasional click of chess pieces on marble. Jamie Kirk sat cross-legged on her bed, her blonde hair escaping its regulation bun, eyes narrowed in concentration at the three-dimensional board suspended between her and her first officer.

Spock sat with perfect posture in the desk chair she'd dragged over, one elegant eyebrow arched as she studied the board. Her dark hair was sleek and precise, her Vulcan features composed—but Jamie had learned to read the microscopic tells. The way Spock's fingers lingered just a moment too long on her knight before moving it. The slight softening at the corners of her eyes.

"You're stalling," Jamie said, grinning.

"I am considering my options with appropriate deliberation," Spock replied evenly. "Unlike some individuals who favor... impulsive tactics."

"Impulsive winning tactics." Jamie leaned forward, propping her chin on her hand. "Besides, you love it when I'm impulsive."

The tips of Spock's ears went the faintest shade of green. "Your lack of Vulcan emotional control is occasionally... not entirely disagreeable."

"High praise from my favorite science officer." Jamie's grin widened. "Come on, we both know you've already calculated seventeen possible moves and their outcomes. What's the real holdup?"

Spock's fingers hovered over her bishop, then moved to her rook instead. "I find myself... distracted."

"Oh?" Jamie watched Spock move the piece, then immediately countered by sliding her queen into position. "By what?"

"You have been engaging in what Doctor McCoy would term 'that smile' for the past 3.7 minutes."

"This smile?" Jamie's expression turned deliberately innocent. "I'm just playing chess with my girlfriend. Can't a captain smile?"

"Indeed. However, your smile typically correlates with either a successful tactical maneuver or..." Spock paused delicately, "other victories."

Jamie laughed, the sound warm in the small space. "Maybe it's both. Check, by the way."

Spock glanced down at the board, one eyebrow climbing higher. "Fascinating. I did not anticipate that combination."

"That's because you were too busy being distracted by my smile." Jamie stretched like a cat, watching Spock's eyes track the movement despite her Vulcan control. "Your move, Commander."

Spock moved her king to safety with precise fingers, then looked up to meet Jamie's gaze directly. "You are aware that I will eventually adapt my strategy to account for your... unconventional techniques."

"You've been saying that for two years now." Jamie reached across the board to adjust a piece that didn't need adjusting, letting her fingers brush against Spock's hand in the process. The touch was brief but electric. "Hasn't worked yet."

"Insufficient data." But there was the ghost of warmth in Spock's voice, the slight relaxation of her shoulders that meant she was allowing herself to simply be rather than perform perfect Vulcan composure. "I may require additional... practice sessions."

"Well, Commander, I think that can be arranged." Jamie made her next move, deliberately leaving an opening. "In fact, I have it on good authority that the captain's schedule is very flexible when it comes to beating her first officer at chess."

"An interesting hypothesis." Spock moved to exploit the opening, then paused, eyes narrowing. "This is a trap."

"Is it?" Jamie's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Or am I just being impulsive again?"

Spock completed her move anyway. "I have calculated a 73.6 percent probability that I am walking directly into your strategy. However..." The smallest smile tugged at her lips. "I find myself curious to see how it unfolds."

"That's very human of you, Spock."

"I blame prolonged exposure to my commanding officer."

Jamie moved her knight, springing the trap. "Checkmate in three moves. And Spock? For the record, I love prolonged exposure to my first officer."

Spock studied the board, seeing the inevitable conclusion, then looked up at Jamie with open affection warming her dark eyes. "Indeed. The feeling is... mutual, t'hy'la."

Jamie stood, walking around the chess board to where Spock sat. She held out her hand, fingers positioned in the Vulcan kiss. Spock rose to meet her, their fingers touching in the intimate gesture that spoke of everything words couldn't convey.

"Another game?" Jamie asked softly.

"Always," Spock replied.

And if they abandoned the board in favor of other pursuits shortly thereafter, well — some victories were sweeter than checkmate.
