My (least) Favorite Player... (OikawaxReader!!!)

Summary:

You never wanted Oikawa’s attention.
Not in chemistry class.
Not in the hallway.
And definitely not when the entire school starts believing you’re his girlfriend.
What begins as a misunderstanding turns into an agreement neither of you fully understands—and the closer you get to the truth behind the captain’s smile, the harder it becomes to remember where the act ends.

Notes:

I'm writing this slowly and don't mind the short chapters. Also I may be inconsistent with posting!!!

Chapter 1: Chemistry

Chapter Text

It was a regular day in your boring chemistry class. The teacher was droning on about something that none of the students really cared about. His voice was robotic, like he himself did not care about what he was saying.

There were a few other people in the class, none of which were your friends. The school was big, and you were not the most social person. One half of the class was a group of girls and a few quiet kids like yourself, and the other side was a group of boys from the volleyball club.

You were sitting in your regular seat, your pencil hovering over your notebook. The margins of your notes sheet was littered with half finished doodles. Your teacher had just assigned independent work after lecturing the boys side of the room about talking too much. The classroom was unbearably silent.

You felt a sudden tap at the back of your neck that made you flinch.

“Ow!”

You turned around slowly. There he was—a smug looking Oikawa laughing at you. Oikawa was the captain of the volleyball team, and he was always popular with the girls. Probably because he was all the teachers’ least favorite type of student, the funny and unserious popular boy. A balled-up piece of paper was sitting next to his feet. Oikawa had this way of always appearing at the worst times.

“Hey, shitty-kawa.” you said, your voice low and sharp.

“Yes, y/n?” He tilted his head just slightly, showcasing that grin that made you want to throw your pencil right at his face.

Your hand shot up before you could think, sticking out your middle finger right before Oikawa’s eyes. His face began to turn red, and for a moment, he seemed almost vulnerable. No, he couldn't be. It was probably just the embarrassment of being stood up to by a complete nobody. Behind him, Iwaizumi, Oikawa’s best friend, was practically dying of laughter. The noise echoed off the walls. However, Oikawa’s eyes were fixed on you. Unblinking. Unamused. He stared in a way that made your chest tighten.

Oikawa was used to control. He never had someone “defy” him before. And yet here you were. Toru always got his way. And that was really starting to piss you off.

As you left the classroom and walked to your locker, Oikawa’s face kept replaying in your mind. What was his deal? He picked on everyone, but you always seemed to be his favorite target. However, something about the interaction today was different.
A tap on the back of your shoulder startled you.
You spun around, expecting to see one of your friends. But it wasn't. There he was—standing tall and proud in the congested hallway. Toru fucking Oikawa.

“Startled, huh?” His voice was teasing, but there was something underneath it. Something that almost didn’t belong to the Oikawa everyone knew.

“Shut up.” your voice quavered ever so slightly.

You shut your locker door and began to walk down the hallway to your next class.

“Wait!” Oikawa called out.
The world seemed too slow. His hand shot out, brushing yours—then holding it, fingers interlacing with yours like it was the most natural thing.
You gazed up at him. His eyes were a deep shade of brown. They glittered with the slightest bit of empathy. His eyes were—pretty. You were stunned at first, but quickly realized that this was probably one of his sick pranks.
You tried to pull away.

“y/n…”

His voice was softer now. Almost as if he was yearning for something.

“Go away Toru.” You wrenched your hand free, stepping past him.

Oikawa reluctantly released your hand. As you walked down the hallway, the image of his eyes lingered in your mind. What the hell was that? For the first time, you weren’t sure if you hated that feeling of his eyes on you—or if it terrified you instead. Or maybe even something else.

Two weeks later~

You arrived at school at your regular time. In the mornings, not many people were hanging out before classes, so the common area was free for you to sit down. You selected a wooden bench. It was uncomfortable, but it would have to do. There was still about twenty minutes until the first class period started.

Just then, you felt a shadow over you. You looked up from your book to see the one person you didn't want to see.

“Oikawa.” You started. “Why are you always everywhere I go? It's getting annoying.”

Toru looked at you with what seemed like a glimpse of hurt in his eyes. But he smiled and brushed off your comment.

“Just saying hello to my classmate.” he stated with confidence.

You shot him a fake smile then went back to your book.

Why did he care so much? Ever since you decided not to play into his antics, Oikawa was always on your back. He was always lurking around and trying to start a conversation. It was really more strange than anything else.
