Work Text:

Raindrops quietly tapped against the window followed by a frantic clatter of windchimes from outside, and eventually a frustrated, plastic-y clatter of closed-off blinds. It was completely miserable outside, it had been for almost the whole week save for yesterday, and even then it was only for a few hours before returning to constant rain and wind chill. Meanwhile, Roku yawned and sprawled his whole body on the modestly-sized sofa before lazily sitting back up.

Seriously?” He groaned as he quickly scratched the back of his head before slumping back over.

“Tell me about it,” DTO replied as he rubbed one of his eyes, “Surprised we didn’t hear about anything getting flooded by now.” He let out a tired sigh as he made his way down two small steps and towards the sofa, stopping mid-step to stretch before essentially towering over his friend.

“Move over,” The redhead playfully motioned toward the opposite direction before flopping downwards. Despite its size, the sofa was just big enough for the two of them to fit snuggly with just below the bare minimum of desired personal space. Given how long the poor weather was predicted to last, the two developed a comfortable laziness that they were sure to regret once it finally ended. DTO reached for the remote the best he could without having to stand back up, just barely able to grab it without straining himself.

“Same as yesterday?” Roku playfully rolled his eyes as the TV’s screen flickered on, which DTO took as a sign to immediately start flipping through a small selection of channels the cheapest package the provider had available.

“Abso-friggin’-lutely, unless you can come up with something more profound.” DTO sharply exhaled as he made himself comfortable, causing Roku to scoot all the way to the opposite side before the two finally settled on a slightly tangled seating (or perhaps laying) arrangement. DTO opted for laying on his back and used a spare pillow to not completely ruin his neck, which left Roku essentially laying on top of his friend, not entirely unlike the way a cat lays on top of their owner. The two chat idly and playfully bicker while deciding on what they both wanted to devote their fleeting attention spans to before DTO ultimately decided without any second-thought. Some action-adventure movie with a fedora-wearing explorer protagonist Roku never heard of, which DTO gasped at the obvious fact. Thankfully, it was just vaguely interesting enough to not have him swat at his friend’s playful sarcasm. Instead, he shrugged and allowed DTO the tiny victory before resting his head on his chest.

The TV droned on in the background as Roku gently stretched his legs. At this point, he didn’t even bother to pretend to pay attention, the movie that DTO was so excited to find was entirely in English and his eyes were getting too heavy to read the subtitles on-screen. It wasn’t like it mattered anyway, DTO was already asleep, or “closing his eyes” as he put it. Whatever the hell that meant. To Roku, he was passed out on account of him quietly snoring, which left him between the on-screen nonsense and his own thoughts.

…His own thoughts about how he even ended up here in the first place. Everything that happened over the past few months just didn’t make sense. It wasn’t like him to accept the comfort of a random stranger, and it definitely wasn’t like him to continue to want that comfort so much that he stuck around. Now that random stranger is a friend, a close one at that. So close that most of their time together was spent like this, intertwined in each others’ arms without having to say a single word to each other. Roku let out a long, but quiet sigh before using what little stored energy he had to lift his head up just enough to meet DTO at eye-level. Coincidentally, DTO began to shift one of his hands towards his shoulder blade while the other remained comfortably on the small of his back. The shift of warmth caught him so off-guard that he clasped his eyes shut and retreated to the crook of his friend’s neck on instinct.

Instinct? That can’t be right. There wasn’t a single part of himself that believed that any of this felt familiar. Not a chance. However, he did always feel a little smaller when DTO held him like this. But it was a different kind of small, unrelated to the fact that DTO was objectively bigger than him, that was obvious. When he felt this way, he also felt sleepy, he felt comfortable. Comfortable enough to keep his eyes closed for a while and continue to think. Think, try to remember something, anything. As he tried to think back to the earliest thing he could possibly remember, he nuzzled against his friend for a second, which caused him to quietly hum and aimlessly move his hands again. This time, DTO used his lower hand and rubbed the small of his back, fingers gently pressing in and moving in a vaguely oblong sweep before he was met back with the warmth of his palm. A gentle spark coursed through Roku’s back, causing him to wrap his arms around DTO a little tighter. Then he nuzzled again, this time with intent. The same thing happened, his friend sleepily rubbed his back before returning to rest at the same spot. Only this time he was also met with a nuzzle back.

Wait. That was it. Now he was starting to remember. He felt this way before when he was smaller. That’s why he enjoyed it, except it felt nicer when DTO was holding him. Much nicer. Roku was actually impressed with himself, he didn’t think he could remember that far back in his life after wandering on his own for so long. Immersed in his own happiness, he tried to shift his body and move closer into DTO’s warmth despite being as physically close to him as he possibly could be, quietly humming to himself. Before he knew it, DTO’s eyes fluttered awake as he tried to prop himself up but ultimately failed after noticing the Roku-shaped weight around his torso. He giggled to himself as he moved his upper hand towards his head to run his fingers through his hair, which gently startled him.

“Comfy?” DTO teased, watching his friend’s head pop back up. Roku’s cheeks flushed a cute, warm pink.

“Didn’t have much to do when you fell asleep.” Roku sarcastically sneered, which awarded him a quick hair-ruffle.

“Bah, whatever, I’ve seen it a dozen times. The rain put me to sleep, I swear.” At this point, he was just straight-up petting Roku, which he didn’t seem to mind at all, except for the fact that it made him want to go to sleep then and there, so he quickly shook his head.

“Guess we should get off our butts and go upstairs?” DTO yawned and tried to coax Roku off his chest without any risk of either of them falling off the sofa. Roku stretched before making his way upstairs, his friend following behind shortly afterward. The two essentially repeated the same routine as downstairs, only this time there was the much-needed addition of more pillows and thick comforter originating from a care package sent from DTO’s childhood home.

“Think it’ll finally stop raining when we wake up?” Asked DTO as he pulled Roku closer, gently intertwining each others’ legs.

“I dunno,” Roku yawned before closing his eyes, “I’m kind of getting used to it by now.”

Notes:

OH THANK GOD SOMETHING BEYOND 300-SOMETHING WORDS.
I had the day off so I spent it writing this. I've actually been meaning to write something about these two for a while.

Thanks for reading. :)
