Chapter 1: Daisies (prologue)

Chapter Text

The soft flowing melody of birds singing sets Reverie’s mind at ease. The tall trees loom over her. Not in a crowded way, more comforting.

As the summer slowly fades away and the crisp fall air settles, her thoughts only contain returning to Hogwarts.

To Reverie, Hogwarts is an escape from her family. Not that she dislikes them whatsoever, she just feels quite overwhelmed in this crowded family. Especially Fred and George, the three of them may have been born triplets but her personality differs from their mischievous nature.

Even so, she is still grateful to have them with her at Hogwarts, and now that Ron is past first year she may be seeing more of him too.

A flash of white catches Reverie’s eye.

“Ah, just what I was looking for.”

She thinks to herself with a pleased smile plastered over the girl's face. Reverie crouches down over a bed of daisies and starts plucking.
Not only is this Reverie’s third year, but her little sister, Ginny’s first.

Throughout the summer she had noticed little Ginny was buzzing with excitement, as well as fear. It seems it has all finally caught up to her. In a last ditch attempt to calm her sister, Reverie has decided to pull together a bouquet of her favourite flowers.

Daisies

Reverie looks down at all she has collected, a bundle of the white flowers are clenched between her fists. Fighting to be freed by the warm breeze. She doesn’t allow it.

“Trying to run away are we? Not yet, I am going to make you into a beautiful gift.”
She says gently, to no one in particular.

Reverie looks up at the sky. The sun shines brightly through the wispy clouds. It is about time she heads back.
Keeping the bouquet close to her heart, she jogs back to the Weasley home. Her home.

Though, she stops short when she sees four figures slowly approaching a window in the house.
Reverie opens her mouth to yell but closes it when she spots unmistakable red.
Grinning, she stalks up behind the group.

“And what is happening here?” Reverie says loud enough for the boys to jump back from the window.

“Reverie! What are you doing out in the forest? It’s early.” Ron asks his older sister, all while a guilty look coats his expression.

“Are you trying to sneak in Harry Potter?” Reverie muses, raising an eyebrow at her twins. Who do nothing to support Ron’s case. Her gaze shifts back to the boy standing by her brother.

“Who… are you?” Harry asks.

At first Reverie thought he had been joking, once seeing George and Fred snicker she sighs. Had Ron not mentioned he had a sister? Two in fact.

“This is a highly unusual situation to be in the middle of.” Reverie sighs, taking a step back.

“Continue with sneaking back into our home. I will pretend I saw nothing. I am sure mom is still asleep.”
Without turning back Reverie walks around the house to the front door. Inside the small space she sets down her daisies on the table. Unwrapping a string woven bracelet from her wrist, tying together the delicate petals.

“Harry Potter, my little brother is sneaking in Harry Potter.” She says under her breath.

Reverie has heard much about him and his friendship with Ron. Naturally, Ron wouldn’t quiet down about it all summer. Bragging how he made friends with the boy who lived.

She smiles to herself, no matter how obnoxious the bragging from Ron may have been. Her heart swells at the fact he made such a dear friend so quickly.
The heartwarming thought is cut short when her mother’s yell echoes through the house. She can only assume her mother has caught the boys sneaking back in.
Reverie uses that as a cue to dodge her mother’s wrath. Stepping up the winding stairs to Ginny’s room she finds her sister sitting at the edge of her bed. Reverie knocks on the doorframe gently,

“Look what I have with me, your favorite.” She smiles, hoping that puts one on her face too. And it does.

Ginny’s previous face of worry morphs into happiness. “You remembered!” She jumps up from her bed, taking the flowers in hand. Holding it under her nose, Ginny breathes in.

“Can you guess who is downstairs?” She asks Ginny, who tilts her head.

“Harry Potter.”

Ginny’s eyes widen like saucers.

George tugs on a red curl, making Reverie swat his hand away with a sharp look.

“I am just trying to get your attention.” He raises both his hands in the air, an innocent look on his face.

“I can think of better ways. But yes?”

“We are all going into this bookshop. If you don’t stay by us mom will freak out.”

“I am in my third year now, we are in third year now. It feels silly to follow mum everywhere now. We have been in Diagon Alley before anyways.” Reverie responds, flattening out her curls.
“Suit yourself.” George shrugs, following the rest of their family and Harry into the shop.

Taking in a gulp of air, she glances around her. Various shops catch Reverie’s attention but one in particular draws her near. A pet shop, companions she likes to call them. By the window owls of many colours sit. They croon their heads as she approaches, Reverie may adore all animals alike, but the way owls can twist their heads always gives her chills.

“Fascinating, right?” A girl's voice says beside her.

Reverie looks to her right, a girl who looks her age stares at the same owl. She has short curls and deep brown skin, a stark contrast to Reverie’s pale skin and ginger hair.
“Sorry?”

“The owls, did you know they can turn their heads completely backwards?” The girl states as she looks from the owl to Reverie, a soft smile on her face.

“That is interesting, and slightly unsettling.” Reverie returns the smile. “My name is Reverie, and you?”

“Luetta, nice to meet you, Reverie.”

Before Reverie can utter another word she hears her fathers voice and the tug on her shirt.
“Time to go.” Is all her father says. Coming from the tone, she can only assume something bothersome happened.

“Oh, okay then, bye Luetta!” She waves to the girl while stumbling away, hoping to see her face again.

Butterwhiskers purrs comfortably in Reverie’s lap, her hands stroke her calico cat's soft fur. The feline's breathing is soft and delicate. Across from her, Ginny is pressed up against the window, frantically waving goodbye to mum and dad. On the other side of the two, Fred and George talk about whatever nonsense runs through their mind.

She joins Ginny at the window to wave goodbye. Once the train starts, Reverie can finally relax. She rests her head back as Butterwhiskers re-positions herself, meowing softly. At the thought of finally returning to Hogwarts a small smile shines on Reverie’s face.

She makes eye contact with Ginny. She had nearly forgotten how frightened her little sister was.

“Everything will be alright, I promise.”
