Chapter Text

The Potter cottage was alive with the sound of The Weird Sisters playing on the wireless and James was currently trying to use his wand to make smoke rings turn into tiny, floating Gryffindors, while Lily laughed, batting them away.

Sirius was trying to convince a skeptical Mad-Eye Moody that his latest prank on the Death Eaters was "tactically sound."

Then, the air shifted. Albus Dumbledore stepped through the door, his usual twinkle replaced by a look of profound, heavy gravity.

Albus!" James said, his grin faltering. "You're late for the toast, but I’ve saved you a-"

"I’m afraid I’m not here for the festivities, James," Dumbledore said softly.

Dumbledore reached into the folds of his robes and produced a small, velvet-lined mahogany case. He set it on the table.

Inside there were glass vessels rested in silk grooves. They weren't filled with the usual pearly-white memories of the Pensieve these glowed with a deep, pulsing emerald light.

"What are those, then?" Moody growled, his magical eye spinning frantically to track them. "They don't look like any Pensieve dregs I've ever seen."

"They are not," Dumbledore agreed. He looked at Lily and James, his expression flickering with something that looked suspiciously like grief.

"I found these in the Hall of Prophecy," Dumbledore whispered.

"But they are not prophecies. They are Records. A chronological account of a timeline that has been sealed away. The Unspeakables couldn't open them. They found that the glass is locked by a specific set of magical signatures."

"Whose signatures?" Moody growled, his hand hovering near his wand.

"Yours," Dumbledore said, looking around the circle.

"Everyone in this room. These vessels will not yield their contents unless this specific 'Circle of Trust' is present to witness them."

"So, what's in them?" Sirius asked, his curiosity getting the better of his caution. "A secret weapon? A way to end Voldemort for good?"

"I do not know," Dumbledore admitted, and that was the most frightening thing he could have said.

"The magic feels... protective. It feels like a story that has already been told, being sent back to a time where it can still be changed. But be warned: knowledge of the future is a heavy burden."

James looked at Lily. She looked back at him, her hand instinctively finding his.

"If it helps us win," James said, his voice firm, "then let's see it. Whatever it is."

Dumbledore nodded solemnly and picked up the first vessel. "Then we begin at the beginning. I suspect the magic will show us exactly what we need to see."

He tipped the emerald liquid into the wide crystal bowl at the center of the table. The mist did not pull them into the memory. Instead, it billowed upward, unfolding before them until it filled the center of the room like a magical stage.
