They found Jonette near midnight, soaking wet and huddled by the train station where they had first picked her up.
“Goodness,” Mathilde said. “All this because of a cabbage.”
The girl had called Mathilde’s cooking vile, and worse. Mathieu had lost his temper and reached for the strap. “I hate you!” she had shouted, and run off into the night.
“If you want to leave-” Mathieu said now.
Mathilde swatted his arm, hard. “Don’t leave.”
Jonette melted into their warm hug, wet dress and all.
Back home, dry, she brought the strap to Mathieu.
“I want to set things right.”
