Bananas in Pyjamas

Summary:

Horror movies are not the only kind of TV that can give Mikey nightmares.

Notes:

The first in what I hope to be a collection of short stories (from drabble length to potentially longer oneshots, depending on inspiration) based on songs. Most of them will be songs that have come up randomly on my shuffled playlist, but this one was a joke prompt from my brother. It was too funny not to.

Work Text:

A scream ripped from Mikey as he sat bolt upright in his bed, breathing hard, sheet pooling in his lap. He tossed it aside as he hurriedly rolled to his feet, eyes darting from shadow to shadow as he scrabbled to turn on the lava lamp on his bedside table.

The switch clicked softly and he breathed gratefully as its gentle purple glow filled the lurking darkness, illuminating his familiar and thankfully entirely banana-free bedroom. He definitely wasn't being chased, by fruit or any other weirdly dressed food. And he was pretty sure it wasn't even a Tuesday.

"Not cool, brain," he said, tapping his own temple. "Very not cool."

A knock at his door had him jumping, another small scream escaping even as he slapped his hands over his mouth.

"Hey, it's just me," Leo said, as he pushed the bedroom door open just far enough to peer into the room.

"Leo," Mikey breathed out with relief, bodily deflating.

"Are you okay?" Leo questioned, eyeing him curiously. "I thought I heard you scream."

Mikey chuckled, scratching the back of his head, bashful grin forming. "Yeah, but it's all good, bro. Go back to sleep. The bananas weren't even real."
