Mary is verry happy her brother is finaly in a healthy relationship, she uses her little sister position to make sure the couple relise how good they are for eachother.
Steve
“Thanks for coming over for dinner.” Steve and Mary had just gotten into Steve’s truck to take Mary back to her hotel. “Danny was really worried about telling you, but I wanted you to know. I will make sure we are together for as long as I can keep him.”
“You’s better be.” Mary’s response surprised Steve with just how blunt she was.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean Danny is possibly the best thing that’s ever happened to you, and he clearly loves you. You can see it in the way he looks at you—it’s like something out of a cheesy romcom—and I’m not going to let you ruin this for yourself.”
“I’m not going to ruin this. We’re adults, Mary. We can handle being in a relationship.”
“If you were two normal people, I would agree with that. But you’re not the average couple—you’re you. You’ve been through so much, and the only other serious relationship you’ve been in was with someone who encouraged your irresponsible plans.” Mary took a deep breath, atempting to plan out what she wanted to say. “Danny is good for you, not only because he loves you, but because he will keep you in check. But you need to listen to him. I know you do nothing for yourself, so do this for me and Danny. Listen to Danny so that he gets to keep his partner, so that I get to keep my brother, and so that Joan, Grace, and Charlie get to keep their uncle.”
“I’m sorry, Mary. I didn’t realise how much you worried about me. I promise I’ll take more care, and I have no intention of ever leaving Danny. I truly do love him, and he himself knows he is the only person besides you who can tell me to do anything and I’ll do it.”
Danny
When Steve told Danny that Mary and Joan were coming to visit for the week, Danny honestly didn’t think he’d see the pair much. The last time Mary had come to visit, only a couple of weeks ago, Steve and Danny had told Mary about their relationship. This had been a pretty big move for Steve, one that both Danny and Mary took note of. The only other relationship Steve had told Mary about was with Cathrin, and even then the pair never met.
Now Mary was back home in Hawaii. She had gotten in contact with Danny and asked him to come over to her hotel for a “friendly chat,” as she put it. Danny quickly agreed, not knowing what to expect but knowing Mary was enough like her brother to err slightly on the side of caution.
When Danny got to Mary’s hotel room, he was surprised not to see Joan. He let himself in and joined Mary, who was sitting on the room’s balcony.
“Hey Mary, what’s up?”
“Hey Danno, glad you could make it. Come, sit,” she said, patting the seat next to her. Danny moved to sit beside her, facing Mary and waiting for her to speak.
“I’m just going to cut to the chase. You know Steve—he’s a hard ass. He tries to convince everyone that he had emotions trained out of him at the academy and that because he’s a SEAL he can’t be hurt, but you know better than that. You know he’s a softy who cares more about family than himself. You know that you have the power to hurt him now that you’ve got your way into his heart, and I swear to God, Danny Williams, if I ever hear of you hurting my big brother, you will not know what’s coming to you.”
“I can promise you I would never intentionally hurt Steve. He means a lot to me, and he did even before we started dating, and it warms my heart that he cares about me enough that he was willing to share our relationship. Hell when we first got together I thought it be years before he wanted to tell anyone with how queer folk are treated in the militery,“ Danny let out an airy laugh obveusly trying to lift some of the tention in the room. “I have seen firsthand how the SEALs have affected his mental health, and I am doing everything in my power to help him.”
“I’m really glad you’re that sure of yourself, because knowing my brother, he will test you at some point, not that he hasn’t already tested how willing you are to follow him. But he thinks so lowly of himself. He seems to think he is only good for fighting, taking down bad guys, making the world a safer place. It’s as if he thinks he stops being a person when he isn’t actively saving people, but since you popped up, I think he’s taking better care of himself.”
This seemed to reassure Mary, she let out a shakey breath and some of the tension in her shoulders was released and she pulled Danny into a hug.
“You have no idea how much that reassures me. I know you’ve known Steve for a while, but I worried that after seeing the results of all the trauma he’d been through, you would have decided you couldn’t cope with it. But I will still kick the shit out of you if you ever hurt my brother. I don’t care that you’re the police, I am stronger than I look.”
“I have no doubt you could and would. You’re a McGarrett, after all, and all the McGarretts I’ve met or heard stories about have had the ability to be terrifying. Honestly, I don’t know if your family is human. Everyone who shares your surname seems to spend their life saving people.”
“Thanks, Dan. Now let’s go. I need to go rescue my daughter from her uncle.”
