Notes:

Work Text:

The sword hadn’t even been fully removed from his body when Killian stumbled, instinctually grasping for Emma.

She let the blade fall into the grass between them.

There was no need for it now, after all. Not now that she’d killed him with it.

Killian sank to his knees, and Emma went down with him, trying to make the most of this final embrace, desperately clinging onto the lapels of his jacket like she could somehow save him from certain death if she kept him upright.

She whispered soft assurances that quickly turned incoherent thanks to the sobs racking their way through her body.

He seemed to appreciate the sentiment anyway, a half-smile pulling at his lips and lighting up his half-dead eyes.

At some point in the moments that followed, Killian Jones went from being a living, breathing man to a corpse left to rot in the grass.

The magic had returned Emma to her pre-Dark One state, and it had done the same to Killian, too, replacing the bloody hole she’d ripped through his stomach with the gash to the neck that had started them down this path, in a different field, worlds away.

How fucking poetic.

Emma’s wrist began to burn, and it was this distraction that allowed her father to pull her off Killian’s fresh corpse.

She tried to tell David something was wrong, or rather, something else was wrong, but all that came out were garbled screams.

Killian was disappearing from view, his hand slipping from hers, and she’d never see him again.

Never walk down Main Street in a heated argument with him, never kiss him after a long day at work, never sneak out of her parents’ to meet him for an evening rendezvous.

She knew in her bones that this was it for her, before she even shoved the stiff leather up her arm and read the damning words that were making her wrist hurt so much.

Excalibur might not be marked with his name anymore, but she would be, forever more, which could only mean one thing: Killian Jones had been Emma Swan’s soulmate, and when he died, their soul bond had been severed.

Killian Jones had been Emma Swan’s soulmate.

She didn’t hear anything else except that revelation, over and over in her mind.

Killian Jones had been Emma Swan’s soulmate.

Now that he was gone, she’d be all alone.
