It's Like an Apple

Summary:

Willy shares a story about when Elliott first tried a pomegranate.

(Quilluary2026 Prompt 1 - Pomegranate)

Notes:

This takes place in an AU I am currently working on. Elliott is a siren that grew up in the sea, Willy helped him move to land, and the S.H.E. trio are essentially a team of magical creature heroes.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

“Ave’ I ever told ye lads bout’ the first time Elliott ever tried a pomegranate?” Willy looked at Shane and Harvey, who were sat at the table in Willy’s kitchen.

Their ‘adventure’ from the night before had brought the trio to the beach. And after a long night of fighting various creatures of darkness and rot, Elliott had successfully convinced Willy to let the three of them have breakfast in the old fisherman’s living quarters right above his shop.

“Willy, please don’t tell my companions about that incident.” Elliott whined from the other side of the kitchen, which made a small grin spread on Shane’s face.

“I mean, I wasn’t interested at first, but now knowing Elliott hates it I think I gotta know.” This earned him an exaggerated groan from Elliott, and a light kick to the shin from Harvey.

“He actually hated em’ at first.” Willy said with a chuckle.

“Wait, really?” Harvey spoke up with surprise. Elliott gasped in offense and gave the doctor a look of deep betrayal.

“Aye.” The fisherman continued with a grin. “But he only hated the things cause’ the lad wasn’t eatin’ em’ right.” Harvey furrowed his brows.

“What does that mean?”

“I’m gettin’ there. I was sat at the edge o’ me boat talkin’ to Elliott. This was before I taught him to walk, so he was stayin’ in the water. He saw me pull one out me bag an’ got curious, you two know how the lad is.” Elliott let out another groan in the background. “I explained it to him, and he asked if he could try it so I handed it to him. I was bout’ to grab a knife and show the lad how to peel it when he-”

“YOU TOLD ME IT WAS LIKE AN APPLE!” Elliott blurted out, face turned a dark shade in embarrassment.

There was a moment of awkward silence until Harvey started to put two and two together.

“Wait, Elliott, did you try to bite the pomegranate?”

The man in question crossed his arms and turned his head away from the others. Shane took this as confirmation and burst out laughing.

“Wait, wait, you actually tried, to eat a pomegranate, like a fucking APPLE?!” Shane was barely even able to get the words out.

“Aye.” Willy said with a large grin. “Bite he took out o’ it was a big one too. An’ ye know what he said after?”

Willy paused, desperately trying to keep himself from laughing as he said the next part.

“He spat it out right back onto the deck and went, ‘Why on earth would ye humans willingly consume somethin’ so utterly VILE.”’ Willy tried his best to mimic Elliott’s way of speech.

Now Shane was laughing so hard he was starting to slap the table with his hand, and even Harvey was snickering at this point. Elliott glared daggers at the other men in the room, waiting for them to calm down.

“In my defense, I grew up in the bloody sea! How was I supposed to know how to eat a land fruit?!”

His frown deepened as the phrase ‘land fruit’ sent the others into another round of hysterics.

Willy wiped a tear from his eye.

“Sorry lad, ye know how badly I’ve always wanted to tell that story.” Elliott only gave him an irritated huff in response. “I know I probably shouldn’t a’ told ye it was like an apple, I shoulda seen that comin.’ It was jus’ the first fruit that came to me mind that I knew ye knew about.” Elliott flipped his hair at the others and turned around, earning another few chuckles from the room.

They went back to the casual conversation they had been having before Willy’s story. And while Elliott had been a bit irritated about the whole thing, he made it clear through small gestures that he wasn’t really mad. He would never admit it out loud, but Elliott actually found the story just as amusing as he found it embarrassing.

Eventually breakfast was ready, and Elliott helped Willy pass out toast and cups of coffee. He wrapped his hand around the mug, warming his fingers, and was about to take a sip when Elliott noticed that Shane was staring at him from across the table.

“Is everything alright?”

“Yeah, just…” Shane pointed a finger at the drink that was in Elliott’s hand. Elliott’s brows furrowed as he was about to question the other before he noticed a small smirk forming on Shane’s face.

“You do know how to drink that, right?”
