Work Text:
“And so the snake was following me, like actually running behind me!” Mike exclaimed laughing.
“Well that was Lucas’ fault” Will says smiling and giggling.
After some seconds of silence, Will gets a notification on his phone, reads it with a smile and puts the phone back in his pocket.
“Well Mike, I gotta go…” he said.
“Oh sure! You know we should do this more often, we don’t really talk much recently” Mike adds the second part with a slight sadness reflecting in his eyes.
“Go figure, we haven’t catched up in almost 3 years!” Will says nonchalantly, grabbing his coat. Mike’s expression is unreadable, what did Will mean by “3 years”?.
“Now I really have to leave, Cody’s waiting for me at home” he tells Mike smiling to him. Mike remains completely frozen at that statement. He doesn’t reply, just looks at him. “And you should go back to your wife too! Also, congratulations for the wedding, it was marvelous” Will adds before patting Mike’s shoulder and leaving, giving him a smile. Mike stays seated at the cafe for some seconds before looking down to his hand, noticing a ring. He starts crying then and there, regret filling his eyes with tears and breaking his heart. He slowly gets up and walks to his car. As he sits in the driver’s side, he slaps himself a couple of times, hoping to wake up. But this was no dream, it was the cruel reality of a man realizing too late. Not fully accepting himself. Never getting the chance to confess his love for his best friend. Now they had drifted apart, didn’t talk much anymore, Will was happy with his new boyfriend, who he loved. And Mike knew it could’ve been him, if he just stopped being so goddamn scared all those years ago. He just wished everything could go back to the way that it was.
