Sheng Shaoyou smoothed down the front of his red sweater for what felt like the tenth time that morning.
The soft wool clung comfortably to his frame, but his nervous energy made him fidget.
Beside him, Huayong looked effortlessly handsome in his white sweater with just a hint of blue inner clothing peeking from the collar.
His Alpha presence was as calming as ever, though his eyes held that same intense affection that always made Shaoyou's heart race.
"Stop worrying" Huayong murmured, reaching over to still Shaoyou's hands.
"Wenlang and Gaotu have everything under control with Huasheng. The kids have been looking forward to this."
"I know," Shaoyou replied, though his scent betrayed his lingering anxiety.
"It's just...we haven't had a day to ourselves in months. What if Huasheng misses us?"
"He'll be fine," Huayong assured, pressing a soft kiss to Shaoyou's temple.
"Besides, our son deserves time with his uncles and lele, and we deserve time together. Now," he added with that gentle dominance that never failed to settle Shaoyou's nerves, "relax and enjoy our date."
The zoo bustled with weekend crowds, but Huayong's hand remained firmly on Shaoyou's lower back as they navigated through the entrance.
The protective gesture wasn't necessary. Shaoyou was perfectly capable of handling himself but he secretly love how Huayong always kept him close.
As they passed the entrance gate, a black and white cart darted across their path, followed by a white and orange tabby that rubbed against Shaoyou's ankle before darting off.
Huayong chuckled. "Even the strays know you're the soft one."
Shaoyou laughed, bending down to scratch behind the orange tabby's ears before it vanished into the bushes.
"They're cute. Maybe we should adopt one."
"Maybe," Huayong teased, pulling him upright. "After we survive today."
They started at the ostrich enclosure, where Shaoyou giggled as one chased its own shadow.
Huayong snapped a photo, Shaoyou mid-laugh, eyes crinkled wind catching the hem of his red sweater.
"You're adorable," he said, showing him the shot. Shaoyou blushed, but leaned into him anyway.
Next, they wandered to the bear exhibit. A large black bear lumbered past the glass, and shaoyou pressed against Huayong's side as it roared more out of habit than fear.
Huayong smirked, wrapping an arm around him. "Still scared of loud noises?" He teased.
"Some things never change," Shaoyou retorted, but he didn't pull away.
At the red panda enclosure, Shaoyou's eyes lit up.
"They're like fluffy raccoons with personalities!" He leaned over the railing, snapping picture after picture as the animals scampered along branches.
Huayong stood behind him snapping a photo over his shoulder
Shaoyou's red sweater glowing against the green foliage, his hair catching the sun.
Then came the giant pandas their original goal.
They lounged lazily, munching bamboo, and Shaoyou whispered, "We'll bring Huasheng next time."
Huayong kissed the top of his head, already taking a photo of them both, Shaoyou grinning beside him, the panda's black and white fur echoing the rings on their fingers.
They paused near the tiger exhibit, where Shaoyou leaned against the railing, watching the big cat pace.
Huayong stood behind him, arms around his waist, and pulled out his phone.
"One for the album," he murmured.
The photo captured their profiles, Shaoyou's red sweater vivid against Huayong's white, the tiger's stripes blurred in the background.
They grabbed sausages from a vendor, walking side by side, fingers brushing then intertwining as they ate.
At the aquarium, they lingered in the open air courtyard outside, the glass walls glowing with underwater lights.
Shaoyou stood facing Huayong, the blue glow reflecting off their faces.
"Take a picture of us," he said, holding up their joined hands rings catching the light.
Huayong snapped it, the glow painting their skin in shifting hues, their fingers entwined like they'd been since the beginning.
"Perfect," Shaoyou whispered, leaning in for a kiss. A nearby tourist giggled, but they didn't care.
They ended the day at the tiger enclosure again this time Shaoyou insisted. "I want one more picture," he said, holding up their hands.
Huayong complied, framing the shot so the tiger's reflection shimmered in the glass behind them, their rings glowing in the late afternoon sun.
As they headed toward the exit, arms wrapped around each other's waists, Shaoyou felt that familiar contentment settle over him the kind that came only from being with Huayong.
The zoo had been perfect, but what mattered most was this time together, reaffirming what they already knew.
"Thank you," Shaoyou said softly.
"For what?"
"For remembering that I need this too. For taking care of me while I'm so busy at work."
Huayong stopped and turned to face him fully.
"That's what mates do," he said simply. "We take care of each other."
The drive hime was comfortable silence, hands joined on the center console.
When they arrived, wenlang met them at the door with an exaggerated sigh.
"Took you long enough," he grumbled, but his eyes twinkled. "Your son has been perfect, by the way. Finished his homework without being asked and everything."
"Thanks, Wenlang," Huayong said sincerely. "We owe you."
"Next time you need a sitter, we're cashing in," Wenlang replied "Gaotu's already planning your debt."
Inside, Huasheng was curled up on the sofa reading a picture book, looking up with bright eyes when they entered.
At six years old, he was the perfect blend of them both Huayong's serious demeanor with Shaoyou's expressive features.
"Did you have fun?" Huasheng asked, marking his page carefully.
"The best," Shaoyou replied, kneeling to ruffle his son's hair.
"How was your day with uncle wenlang, Uncle Gaotu and lele?"
"We made cookies and watched two movies," Huasheng reported proudly. "And I cleaned my room without being told."
"What a good boy," Huayong praised, joining them on the floor. "You deserved extra bedtime story tonight."
"Three stories?" Huasheng negotiated with his father's cleverness.
"Two," Huayong countered with a smile. "But you can pick them."
Later that night, with Huasheng tucked into bed and the house finally quiet, they curled together on the bed. Shaoyou's head rested on Huayong's chest, their breathing synchronized.
"Best date we've had in years," Shaoyou murmured sleepily.
"Second best," Huayong corrected
Shaoyou lifted his head. "What was first?"
"The day I met you," Huayong replied simply. "And the everyday since then."
Shaoyou's heart swelled with that familiar overwhelming love for this Enigma who was his anchor, his safe harbor, his everything.
He pressed a kiss to Huayong's chest right over his heart.
"I love you," He whispered.
"Always," Huayong replied, holding him closer as they drifted toward sleep, content in the knowledge that no matter how busy life became with their growing son, they would always find their way back to each other.
