E is for Endless Electric Possibilities

Summary:

Sonic and Silver both went to the roof to get away from the crowd. Now they discuss their fears as they sit together.

February Ficlet Challenge Day 5: Electric and Endless

Note: This was written with the intention of being Sonilver, but with the exception of a scene where Sonic blushes, it can be read as close platonic if you choose to read it that way.

Notes:

I decided to interpret Endless as Endless Possibilities.

Work Text:

Silver sat on the roof, looking out at the greenery of Green Hills. A soft breeze blew through his quills as he could hear the muffled chattering of everyone else inside.

"Must be a lot easier to sneak up to the roof when you can fly." Sonic spoke as he walked up to Silver.

"Oh! Hey Sonic." Silver was a bit surprised, not expecting anyone else to be up there. "What's up?"

"This is my home. You don't think I know the best spots? It was getting a bit crowded inside..." Sonic got quieter with the last sentence, a bit embarrassed. He loved being around others, but he had to remind himself sometimes that it was safe to be. Being alone for too long was terrifying, but so was being with others for too long. This was especially true with larger crowds—though Sonic's idea of a large crowd was much small that most's.

As Sonic sat down next to him, Silver noticed small sparks on Sonic's quills. As Sonic took a deep breath, the amount of sparks decreased.

"That's chaos energy, right?"

As Sonic heard Silver's question, a little more electricity could be seen before going back down.

"Yeah...or at least that's what Longclaw always said."

"That's amazing. Very few can actually harness it." Silver looked down at his own hands as they started glowing like he was about to move something.

Sonic blushed a little at the comment before speaking softly, seemingly to himself. "With great power must also come great responsibility."

Silver looked over as Sonic continued looking out.

"It's a famous quote here. Who knew it would be so true."

This was the most calm Silver had ever seen Sonic. Sonic always seemed like he was ready to jump right into the next adventure. He had forgotten that Sonic was just a teen like himself.

"How do they do it?" As Sonic continued, his tone got sadder and the sparks became more noticeable.

"Who?"

"The heroes in the comics."

"Those are fake though, right?"

"Yeah... I guess they do it because the writer says so... How do I do it, then?" The last part was barely audible. Sonic seemed embarrassed as he admitted his fear to Silver. It was nice to talk to someone who you didn't live with, though. Part of Sonic wanted to shut up, but the other part of him couldn't.

"Because we have to?" Sonic looked over at Silver, not expecting an actual response. "What choice do we have?"

"We always have a choice."

"How‽ If I failed, the future is doomed." Silver got visibly more stressed as he spoke. Neither Sonic nor Silver knew just how long he had been stuck on that thought.

"You could let it be. You chose to try and fix it."

"I..." Silver thought about what Sonic said. He supposed no one physically forced him, but he couldn't let himself not do it.

"You could have moved here. Left your time. But you didn't! You made the choice!"

Silver looked at Sonic, who now had a new determination in his eyes as he leaned towards Silver. After a moment, Sonic started chuckling to himself. Sonic turned away, still laughing to himself.

"What's funny?" Silver asked, genuinely confused by what had caused this random laughing spell.

Sonic stood up, looking at the ground below. "I suppose I answered my own question."

Sonic turned back to Silver who was still sitting. "I'm going to head back inside now."

Sonic jumped off the roof, landing in the front yard. Electricity released from his body as he hit the ground and struck a superhero landing style pose. Silver watched as Sonic, who now had a bright smile on his face, went inside. Maybe one day he could be like that too.
