Work Text:
After their last mission, Kim Do-gi and Oh Won-song fell into the water while badly injured. Among everyone in the Rainbow Taxi team, Ahn Go-eun was the most devastated.
Even though she herself was injured and blood kept flowing from her arm, she refused to listen to anyone. Ignoring the pain, she jumped into the deep, freezing water in search of Do-gi.
She had no strength left, yet she kept searching for hours.
Eventually the rescue team arrived and forced her out of the water. Unable to bear the fear of losing the person she trusted and loved the most, Go-eun collapsed from exhaustion.
When she woke up, she was lying in a hospital bed. The Rainbow team was there beside her.
Everyone was there.
Everyone except Kim Do-gi.
The realization shattered her.
For weeks she cried, mourning the loss she refused to accept. But slowly, through the pain, she forced herself to become strong again. The Rainbow Taxi service still existed, and there were still many victims who needed their help.
Six months passed after the incident.
Every day she remembered the small moments they had shared together—the late-night meals after long working hours, the way Manager Park and Manager Choi teased her endlessly, how she would threaten them in return, and how Mr. Jang, who was like a father to her, always made sure she had everything she needed.
Most of all, she remembered the way Do-gi quietly watched all of them, admiring the bond they shared.
After she was discharged from the hospital, Mr. Jang insisted that she should visit her parents in Canada and rest for a while. But Go-eun refused.
Being who she was, she chose to stay.
Instead, she decided to take Do-gi’s place and continue helping the team bring justice to those who had been wronged.
During the past six months, she had worked tirelessly beside them. She trained herself relentlessly—learning how to fight better, how to shoot, how to drive, and most importantly how to make villains experience the consequences of their crimes.
She had become stronger than ever.
---
Meanwhile, after falling into the water that night, Kim Do-gi had somehow survived.
A group of medical students near the beach found him unconscious and bleeding heavily. They immediately rushed him to the hospital and performed emergency surgery. Unfortunately, they could not contact anyone related to him because he carried no identification, no phone number, and no name.
For five months, he remained in a coma. His body had been severely injured.
When he finally woke up, he found himself in one of the best hospitals in Korea. The only familiar face beside him was Park Jae-won.
Two months earlier, Park Jae-won had visited the hospital with Yoon Seo-a’s grandmother for a medical check-up. After learning about the unidentified patient and realizing it was Do-gi, he decided to stay and take care of him.
When Do-gi regained consciousness, the first thought that came to his mind was Go-eun.
Was she safe?
Was the Rainbow team alright?
Park Jae-won reassured him that everyone was alive and doing well. He had occasionally kept track of them from afar, though he never told them about Do-gi being in a coma. They were already dealing with their own grief, and he believed it would be better to let them heal first.
He had only told them one thing—that Do-gi’s body had never been found, so there was still hope.
Do-gi desperately wanted to return to them immediately, but his body had not fully recovered. The doctors insisted he remain in the hospital for at least one more month.
Finally, after that month passed, he was discharged.
Before leaving, he thanked each of the medical students who had saved his life.
For a short while he stayed with Park Jae-won. But eventually he knew it was time to return to where he truly belonged.
He longed to see the family he had almost sacrificed his life to protect.
Yet deep down, there was one person he missed the most.
Ahn Go-eun.
She had become someone incredibly important to him—someone who held a place in his heart second only to his mother.
He knew she must have suffered the most after his disappearance. More than anything, he wanted to see her again… to hold her and never let go.
---
By the time he reached the Rainbow Taxi office, it was already midnight.
He assumed his apartment had likely been rented to someone else, since he had been missing for months. Instead of going there, he quietly entered their hidden office—the place where they used to discuss their revenge plans.
Looking around, he realized the team had never stopped their work. They were still helping victims.
A small smile appeared on his face.
At the same time, he felt concerned.
He already knew who must have taken his place.
Go-eun.
Even though he wanted to see her immediately, he decided to wait until morning.
During the night he reviewed every single case they had solved during his absence.
The more he read, the more surprised he became.
She had done an incredible job.
He felt proud.
---
When he woke up again, it was already evening. The medicine he was taking made him extremely tired.
He walked out of the hideout and headed toward the garage where the taxis were parked. Eventually he stopped near Go-eun’s office.
She was not there.
Curious, he stepped inside.
On the desk he found a photograph of the team and the small model taxi he had once given her when she passed her driving exam.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
Just as he stepped out of the office, someone suddenly grabbed his arm and attempted to twist it.
His reflexes reacted instantly.
When he turned around, he froze.
Standing in front of him was Ahn Go-eun.
Her eyes widened in shock.
Behind her stood Mr. Jang, Manager Park, and Manager Choi—equally stunned.
For a moment no one spoke.
Go-eun slowly released his arm and stepped back.
The others rushed forward and hugged him tightly.
She wanted to do the same.
But she didn’t.
There had always been an invisible line between them—one neither of them had ever dared to cross.
Do-gi wanted to hug her more than anyone else.
But he held himself back.
Sensing the tension, Mr. Jang suddenly pulled Go-eun into the group hug.
“Why are you standing there?” he said warmly. “We’re all family here.”
With that, he placed her right between them.
For a moment, Go-eun and Do-gi found themselves holding each other.
It was not the first time they had embraced.
There had been many moments before—when she cried in his arms, when he comforted her and told her everything would be alright, when she hugged him to thank him for always protecting her.
They had even pretended to be a couple during missions.
But this time felt different.
This time the feeling between them was something they could no longer deny.
Love.
---
Later that night, they all went out to celebrate Do-gi’s return.
During dinner he explained how he had survived and how Park Jae-won had taken care of him.
When Go-eun learned that Jae-won had kept the secret from them, she became annoyed and declared she would scold him the next time they met.
For the first time in months, the team saw her genuine smile again.
During the conversation Do-gi mentioned that he had assumed his apartment was no longer available.
That was when the others revealed the truth.
Go-eun had been paying the rent every single month.
She had been taking care of the apartment, hoping he might return one day.
When she realized everyone was looking at her, Go-eun became embarrassed and quickly left the restaurant, claiming she had something important to do.
---
Later that night, Do-gi returned to his apartment.
Everything was clean.
There was no dust anywhere.
When he went to the rooftop, he saw that his plants and vegetables were well maintained. Even his workout equipment had been carefully cleaned.
It was obvious.
Go-eun had been taking care of everything.
He stood there quietly until a soft voice broke his thoughts.
“Gisa-nim.”
He turned around.
There she was.
The sound of her voice was something he had missed the most.
“Yes, Go-eun-ssi,” he replied gently.
She was carrying a bag filled with fruit and other supplies he might need—including his favorite protein drink.
They sat together on the bench under the stars.
Do-gi looked at the sky.
But his eyes kept drifting toward the brightest star beside him.
“Go-eun-ssi,” he said softly.
She turned to look at him.
Their eyes met and neither wanted to break the gaze.
“Why did you do it?” he asked quietly.
She knew exactly what he meant.
“Because I believed you would come back,” she answered.
Feeling her emotions rising, Go-eun stood up quickly.
“Good night,” she said before starting to walk away.
But suddenly Do-gi stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
She tried to break free at first, but eventually she stopped resisting.
There was something he needed to tell her.
He spoke about the day he had been drugged during the Black Sun case and how he had later learned that she was the one who had risked her life to protect him from the van.
He also told her he knew she had jumped into the water that night despite her injuries.
Slowly, Do-gi turned her around so she was facing him.
“Go-eun-ssi…” he said quietly.
She looked up at him, her eyes still filled with emotion.
For a moment he hesitated, something he rarely did.
“There’s something I should have said a long time ago.”
Her heart began to race.
“When I woke up in the hospital… the first person I thought about was you,” he continued softly. “I kept wondering if you were safe.”
Go-eun tried to look away, but he gently held her hand.
“You’re the one who occupies my mind,” he said. “And the one who holds my heart.”
Her eyes widened slightly.
“Go-eun-ssi… I love you.”
For a moment she simply stared at him, unable to speak.
Then tears slowly filled her eyes.
Instead of answering with words, she stepped forward and buried her face in his chest.
Do-gi wrapped his arms around her immediately.
“You idiot,” she said through quiet sobs, lightly hitting his shoulder. “Do you know how worried I was?”
“I know,” he replied gently, holding her closer. “I’m sorry.”
After a while she calmed down, but she still didn’t let go.
Do-gi rested his chin lightly on her head.
“I’m not going anywhere anymore,” he promised.
Under the quiet moonlight, they stayed like that for a long time—holding each other as if they were afraid that letting go might make the other disappear again.
Finally, Go-eun spoke softly.
“From now on… we fight together.”
Do-gi smiled.
“Always.”
