Work Text:
Jade runs breathlessly away from the field, beaming as she finds Dave exactly where she was expecting him. She springs up onto her tiptoes to press a kiss against his mouth, and he wraps his arms around her waist to hold her close. When she pulls away, it’s just enough to teasingly murmur, “I thought you didn’t come to games?”
“Yeah, well, when I realized you’d be here in a short skirt I changed my mind.”
Jade laughs, prodding his shoulder with a finger. “Shut up!” He grins, tilting his head down to press another quick kiss against her mouth. She hums into the kiss, leaning after him when he starts to pull away until she can’t reach anymore.
“Are you good to leave yet? I don’t like the way the other nerds are staring at you.”
She rolls her eyes fondly. “Those other nerds are my friends.”
“Yeah, and I bet they’d like to be more than that.”
She snorts. “You are not jealous!”
“I’m a little jealous.”
“What are you jealous of!”
“I dunno, Jade. You’re hot and smart and nice to everybody. I don’t know how well that meshes with my reputation.”
She laughs again. “Seriously? Do you think I care about that?”
“I think your friends might.”
“Dave, that’s stupid! My friends are not gonna steal me from you. Even if they wanted to—which they totally don’t—I wouldn’t leave you for one of the guys in the band!”
Dave purses his lips, and even though she can’t see his eyes behind his shades, she’s pretty sure he’s glaring over at the other members of the marching band. “I guess,” he eventually mutters, giving her another squeeze before he pulls away from her and takes a step back.
“Hey, where are you going?”
He peels off his leather jacket, holding it out toward her. “You’re shivering. It’s ridiculous how cold you get. You’d think a girl as smart as you are would know how to dress warmer.”
“It’s a uniform! And I am not shivering!”
“Jade, that skirt is short enough I can see the goosebumps on your legs. You can’t lie to me.”
“It is not that short!”
“It’s way shorter than the skirts you usually wear. I feel like a scandalized Victorian man. I don’t think I’ve ever seen your ankles before.”
“You have definitely seen my ankles before.”
“I’ve never seen your ankles before while you were wearing clothes,” he amends. “Seriously, have you ever worn a skirt that short before?”
“Only at every game this season!”
“Damn. Maybe I do have to start going to these things.”
Jade snorts again and Dave wraps the jacket around her shoulders. Admittedly, it is warm, and she pulls it a little tighter around herself. Dave smirks, and she rolls her eyes. “You don’t have to look so smug.”
“Who’s smug? I’m not smug.”
“Haha, whatever! Hey, are you coming to the party?”
“There’s a party?”
“Yeah! We always have an afterparty when we win.”
“Did we win?”
“Well, it’s only halftime, but it’s looking pretty good!”
“How much of the game is left after halftime?”
“...Half of it, Dave.”
“Oh. Yeah, I guess that makes sense.” Dave looks over toward the band again, and Jade is pretty sure he’s biting on the inside of his lip, which he only does when he’s nervous and trying to look cool about it. “I dunno, a party with all of the band geeks doesn’t really sound like my scene. Can’t we just go back to your place?”
“My grandpa is home!”
“We can go to your place and just hang out.”
Jade purses her lips. “Dave, you cannot be scared of meeting my friends.”
“What? Scared? Jade, I’m not scared of band geeks. It just sounds lame.”
“You have never even talked to any of the other members of the band! Come on, you can’t avoid them forever.”
“I can and I will.”
“Daaave!” She pouts up at him, and he tips his head back to look up toward the sky.
“Ugh. No. Don’t give me the puppy dog eyes. That’s so fucked up, Jade.”
“We are going to college next year and then I might never see these people again! I want you to meet my friends!”
“Can’t I just wait it out until you guys aren’t seeing each other ever again?”
“Dave! Please?”
“Christ, Harley, c’mon.”
“Pleeease?”
Dave groans, long-suffering, and drags his hand over his face. “Fine. Okay. I’ll go to the nerd party if it makes you happy.”
“Yay!” She springs up onto her tiptoes to kiss him again, wrapping her arms around his neck, and she can feel him smiling against her lips.
