Work Text:
The morning had just hit, sunlight was peeking through the room blinds. Yuuji and Megumi were there, eyes still closed, they always fell asleep in each other’s arms and that was the only place where they felt like nothing could get to them.
They’ve both been through so much but in moments like this the outside world didn’t matter. It was easy for Megumi to fall asleep wrapped in Yuuji’s arms, he felt safe, he felt alive, something about getting to hear Yuuji’s heartbeat, feeling it pulse pressed against his skin was enough, always enough. Megumi wakes up first, his eyes fluttering open slowly as he felt Yuuji stir up in the bed and that’s when he felt sure he didn’t want to get up so soon.
Megumi didn't always wake up first, but enjoyed a lot the times he did, because that was when he had time to admire the prettiest boy he’d ever seen that was laying right there next to him, the sight was still baffling and even after all these years he didn’t understand how he got to be the one that wakes up next to the guy he always admired and loved every single morning, but deep down he knew it had always been him and he wouldn’t settle for anything else after he got to have him like this.
Megumi always thought about all of the times he almost lost Yuuji, all they’ve been through, all he’s been through. It was horrifying, even just the thought of it, the nightmares that never really went away, Sukuna’s voice always taunting and loud inside his head and overlapping with the memories of all the bloodshed that was forever engraved into his brain ever since it happened.
They both had lost so many people already, people that they loved, Megumi couldn’t even stand the thought of Yuuji ever leaving him. Maybe that was what made moments like this so important, right now, Yuuji was right there, he could feel his breath against his neck, warm and reassuring, he wouldn’t want to be anywhere else right now.
And Yuuji feels the same way.
He feels safer when he knows Megumi is right there and also fears anything that would take Megumi away from him ever happens, Yuuji needs this kind of reassurance too, the constant knowledge that the person he loves is right there by his side makes everything easier. Megumi turned around to face Yuuji and analyzed every detail on his face, the streak across his face left by the early sunlight, his scars, his lips, the faint pink color of his hair. Megumi traced Yuuji’s features softly with his fingers and even though feeling the rough skin under his touch left by scars always brought him back to all the moments he had to worry about Yuuji’s life, it hit in a bittersweet kind of way, the scars were healed now, they would always be there as an undeniable reminder of everything but they were fine now, alive and most importantly —together.
Megumi had scars of his own too, no matter how much time passed, when he looked at his reflection they were always still there, on his face and on his ribs, Yuuji had a habit of tracing his fingers lightly over them, leaving soft kisses on Megumi’s scarred skin, always so gentle, reminding him over and over again how strong he’s been.
Yuuji starts moving around as he acknowledged the familiar touch of Megumi’s fingers brushing across his face, he giggles sleepily at the feeling and after a few seconds he finally stirs awake, his eyelids fluttering open still heavy with sleep, until he spots Megumi in his view, those golden brown eyes immediately filled with awe, Megumi melted under that gaze every time. Megumi’s face was never easy to read and it took Yuuji long enough to figure out how to do so, but god, he looked so obvious right now, the way his eyelashes battered right above that deep green color of his irises, that look was unmistakable.
“Well, good morning.” Yuuji said, voice deep with sleep, which merged into a yawn.
Megumi was stunned by the view in front of him, even though he got to wake up by Yuuji’s side everyday, his accelerated heartbeat made him feel like it was the very first time. He even took a few seconds to reply but as Yuuji’s morning voice seeped into his ears as he felt the corner of his lips twist into an unconscious smile and replied:
“Good morning” with his eyes still locked with Yuuji’s.
Yuuji sat up on the bed and Megumi instantly accommodated himself on the other boy’s arms with his own messy raven hair falling onto Yuuji's body, when his face met Yuuji’s rising and falling chest, he just laid there matching his own breathing with Yuuji’s. It was like this almost every morning, their first moment of the day where they could just exist next to each other and silence everything about the outside world for a little while, in that moment nothing outside of their room mattered.
Yuuji’s fingers met Megumi’s soft dark strands, brushing them off of his face gently to get a better view of his eyes and it was in that moment he knew, he was completely sure that Fushiguro Megumi was the person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, the most beautiful boy he’d ever laid his eyes on, the one looking up at him right now. Both stayed tangled like that for a while, the times where silence between them meant awkwardness were long gone, they weren't teenagers anymore, they learned to love each other even when they’re quiet and it felt comfortable now, the kind of silence left by only when two people who understand each other, when no words are needed, or could even come close to express the deep mutual affection they held for one another.
Yuuji reached for Megumi’s face, thumb brushing his cheek, when Megumi lifted up and leaned in closing the already really small distance between them. Their lips crashed together into a slow, soft passionate kiss, Megumi cupped Yuuji’s face to deepen the kiss. Yuuji smiled into his mouth, pulling back for a second
“Someone woke up happy” he said teasingly, before their mouths met once again.
“Idiot” Megumi giggled, finally breaking the kiss.
“So what are we gonna do today?” Yuuji said while accommodating his arms back around Megumi. “I could get up and make you some breakfast or… we could just stay here a little longer.”
Megumi let out one lazy hum with his cheek smashed in Yuuji’s chest, protesting that he shouldn’t move.
“Hm, if you insist so much I guess I could stay.” Yuuji replied teasingly.
Megumi's eyes rolled back but he couldn’t hide the smile under it. He sure loved how annoying Yuuji was, bantering him like this, how he’s always been ever since the day they met and that was something Megumi was really glad about, it was reassuring in a way, a lot of things around them had changed over the years, that was undeniable, but that wasn’t one of them.
It hadn’t been easy for either to settle for all those changes that were forced upon them, of course it hadn’t been easy to move on from that, but they went through all of it together and that made it all a little less excruciating.
“You are kind of annoying, you know that, right?” Megumi stated playfully as he turned his head up. He couldn’t hide that unmistakable grin even if he tried and it felt unfairly impossible to do so around Yuuji.
Yuuji laughed it off like he usually did and kept looking down at the way Megumi’s eyes glowed under the faint sunlight coming through their bedroom window. That was when a certain question popped up in Yuuji’s mind, one that he had been meaning to ask for a long time, he wasn’t sure if Megumi would’ve answered him before, it was stupid, really. Just a silly curiosity that passed through Yuuji’s brain from all the way back from their teenage years.
“Megumi,” Yuuji called out.
he hummed lazily in response, with his face still pressed against Yuuji’s body.
“Can I ask you something?”
Megumi lifted his head, looking up til his eyes met Yuuji’s, he was curious.
“Yeah, sure. What is it?” he replied.
Yuuji chuckled lightly, “I know it’s stupid but you’d answer for me, right?”
“Yuuji, c’mon… say it.” as he let out a nervous laugh.
“So… since your shikigami are made out of your cursed energy,” Yuuji furrowed his eyebrows, feeling Megumi’s piercing stare. “... can you feel stuff through them? Like if I pet one of your divine dogs, could you feel it?” Megumi flopped his head back down Yuuji’s torso, breaking the eye contact
“You were right, that really is stupid.”
“Ah, shut up! You’re not gonna answer me?” Yuuji said, angling his body up to look down at Megumi’s face.
“Where’s all of this even coming from?” Megumi giggled awkwardly.
“I don’t know. Just remembered the time I gave one of your shikigami bunnies head scratches and you got all awkward and flustered. I was so embarrassingly in love with you at that moment, could you even tell?”
“That was so long ago, are you serious? I didn’t think you liked me back, you were all about that tall girl with a big ass stuff at that time, how was I supposed to know?”
They were both smiling like dorks, looking back now and realizing they were down bad for each other, Yuuji’s grin softened almost immediately when he looked down at Megumi, examining every inch of his now flustered face. Yuuji himself wasn’t much different than that from Megumi’s point of view, he quietly observed the way the faint pink in his cheeks matched the color of his hair, and it’s like they both felt like stupid teenagers all over again.
Megumi went silent for a moment, like he was trying to find the words, still listening to the steady beat of Yuuji’s heart under him. He sighed and locked eyes with Yuuji once again.
“Okay, fine. Do you really wanna know?”
Yuuji nodded while still carding his fingers through dark hair.
“I feel it,” Megumi admitted. “But it’s different, not exactly the same as if you were touching me… it’s more of a warm kind of pressure,” He paused for a second. “And that time you are talking about, I remember it. It felt weird cause I had never felt it before, at least not as intense as it was at that time, I didn’t know how to act, I couldn’t even look at you, it was really embarrassing.”
“I knew it,” Yuuji laughed under his breath. “You had me thinking I had done something wrong and I felt like an idiot.”
“You were an idiot.” Megumi shot back. He leaned in towards Yuuji and cupped his face, eyes dropping to his lips and pressing a soft kiss there in the same way they always did and Yuuji leaned into his touch with ease. “Still are.”
“Is that all that you wanted to hear?” Megumi added after they both broke away from the kiss. Yuuji's eyes were soft as he reached out for Megumi’s hand and laced their fingers together, “Mm-hmm, that’ll do.” Yuuji answered.
They took their time in bed that morning, bodies lazily tangled, fingers locked, sharp green eyes looking up to meet honey brown ones, just sinking into each other’s presence, they didn’t need anything more than this.
“I love you.”
The words came out of Megumi’s throat with absolutely no effort, just pure honesty, he isn't the type to throw these words around to anyone, if he said it, he meant it and that was exactly what he just did, it wasn't the first time he said it and it wasn't anywhere near the last either.
Yuuji smiled like he had just won the lottery, in some ways he did and the prize was right there beside him, he couldn't think of anything better than this.
“I love you so much.”
He meant it.
Yuuji replied almost instantly, he didn’t need another thought, this is everything he ever wanted.
