Chapter Text
Will Byers walked slowly through the halls of Lenora High, his hands stuffed into his jean's pockets. Jane walked by his side, her head up high. She wanted to be brave, he could tell. This was her first time ever going to any sort of school. They had spent the entire summer catching her up to his grade level, and with help from Murray, they forged some pretty good old report cards.
In those summer home-schooling lessons, each member of the family had done their own part. Will had lead her in English. Jane still spoke in her usual phrased statements, but he reckoned she had learned the basics to write a good enough essay. He felt proud when she eventually did write her first ever essay. He placed it on the fridge with pride that night.
Joyce had taken her through math, with Jonathan's help. Will barely passed math, so he figured he'd sit that out. And of course, science was a labour of love between Will, Jonathan and some lengthy calls with Dustin. Joyce did not appreciate the phone bill those Dustin calls racked up.
Overall, Jane felt ready. Ready for her life to finally be normal. Free from the reaches of her past. She felt that everything she had been through, was leading to this. A normal, mundane highschool day. Like the ones she would watch on TV with Hopper.
She adjusted her bag and looked down at the piece of paper in her hands. It was her timetable. She knew she had a class called homeroom with Will. She traced her finger along the first line on the table, finding the room.
N2.3
"That means its in the north wing." Will said, noticing her actions.
"Where is that?" She asked confused.
"Here," Will said flipping his own paper, "theres a map on the back."
Indeed there was a map on the back. Jane traced her finger on the map, eventually finding the room. She looked up, trying to figure out where she was on the map. The hallway was getting more and more crowded. A heavy feeling slumped into her stomach. She felt her confidence slowly chop away.
"Don't worry, I can find it for us." Will said, bumping his shoulder to hers.
"Okay."
.
"Jane Byers?" Ms. Smith called out.
"Here." Jane said in a low voice.
"Jane Byers?"
"She's here miss!" The boy behind her said loudly.
"Ah, you're one of the new students!" Jane felt a hot rush creep up the back of her neck. "And your brother, I assume, is Will Byers?"
Will raised his hand and smiled at the teacher. She looked at him surprised. He felt the same heat rush to his cheeks.
"Welcome to Lenora High! And am I right to assume you both are twins?" She asked earnestly.
Will was shocked at her question. Murray had not forged Jane's birth certificate yet, so he was confused as to how she had even deduced that.
"I'm sorry. I assumed since you're both in the same year. And you both do bare such a striking resemblance." Ms. Smith said with a warm smile.
"We are. We're twins." Jane said with a smile.
The teacher smiled at that answer, before welcoming them again and moved on. Jane smiled at her ability to respond so suavely.
Will however, sat silently. He did not know why, but that whole interaction threw him off. He felt a little weirded out by it. It took him a bit to get used to Jane always being there. It was such an adjustment when she went from his best friends annoying girlfriend to his now twin sister.
He looked at her as she brought out her notebook and started taking notes. He chuckled quietly at that. It was homeroom, there was nothing to take note of.
But as he looked at her, he noticed that the teacher was right. She did sort of look like him. And he looked like her. He did not know how long it would take him to get used to being a twin now. It had always been him and Jonathan.
"Hey. So you're a twin?" A voice asked behind him. He turned back to see who asked.
Sitting behind him was tanned skinned boy. He had long black hair, a soft jawline and dark brown eyes. He was looking at Will quite pointedly, waiting for an answer.
"Uh yeah," Will said a second too long. He couldn't help but look at this strangers lips.
"Thats cool. Do you guys have like psychic abilities?" Wills eyes widened at this, before he realised what the boy meant.
"Like twin telepathy, or what not?" The boy said, raising his eye brows.
"Uh... not really." Will said, a little confused, embarrassed at his reaction.
"Thats a waste. My cousins are twins and they always know what the other is thinking." The boy said casually.
"Thats cool." Will said, and turned around, looking back at the teacher as she explained how to read the timetable.
Jane watched this whole interaction go down. She hoped someone would talk to her.
No one talked to her for the rest of the class.
