Work Text:

Jeppy Jothers lived a simple life, but it dulled his soul. Nothing new happened, he didn't feel the same as when he did a long while ago but only now did he realize how far he truly strayed from what once was.

It was like that saying about the frog and boiling water. You leave a frog in very slowly warming water and it won't realize it's being cooked alive until the water began boiling and it could no longer escape. A little graphic if you think about it, but oh well. Jeppy felt like a frog.

As he walked down the gravel road, past the windmills and friendly grass waving at him, Jeppy's mind wandered to what he's created in his mind. The thing he spent much of his time creating for the past while. There was nothing stimulating about his life, but coming into the world inside his head itched something he craved.

Well, it used to. But no matter how hard he tried now, no matter how vividly he made this world based off his favorite books and shows, it never fills the hole in his life. Which is why it just left him sad and bitter to think about.

Jeppy came to an abrupt stop when he turned to his right, a clean pink sign sticking out against the peeling buildings nearby. A donut shop.

Jeppy never remembered a donut shop being there, but he usually doesn't go down this way so maybe it was recently added and he just never knew until now.

Glancing at the time on the big digital clock on the window, Jeppy opened the glass door after making up his mind.

It was small, just two tables and a bar area with three seats, but it wasn't cramped. The air had a sweet warm scent with the faintest smell of old sweat while a jukebox with big dents in it played 80s tunes.

Jeppy made his way to the counter, staring at the array of brightly colored pastries as the counter remained vacant of any workers. Jeppy did a double take to make sure they were open.

After some time, a short person was at the counter handing him a small package of goods after he paid for what he wanted. Leaving the small store as he made his way home, the hot pastries radiating heat that warmed his hand as he walked down the road.

Sitting on his porch, Jeppy bit into his kolaches while sitting in his foldable chair. The buttery soft bread and the warm crisp sausage melting in his mouth as he watched the sun in the distance. Washing it all down with his favorite fruit juice.

A sort of comfortable ease settled into him as he just sat there, blanking his mind as he sucked in the sweet air through his nose.

By the time he was beginning to devour his sprinkle covered chocolate frosted donut, his lips had quirked up ever so slightly for the past half hour until they were a gentle curve on his face.
