Chapter Text
Naruto.... is bad?
"What is he doing out here!? That disgusting fox-"
"Shh! You can't say stuff like that! He'll hear you!"
"Who cares?"
Ducking around a building, the worn wood under his fingers was rough as he gripped the corner to hide from the woman's scary look. Naruto learned early that being seen was dangerous. "I'm sorry.." He whispers to himself.
It wasn’t something anyone told him outright.
No lecture, no warning, no kindly adult kneeling to his height and explaining the rules of the world. Explaining what about him made the villagers hate him so. It was simply something the village taught him, the way winter teaches cold and fire teaches pain—through repetition.
Eyes lingered, they narrowed, and they were cold. Voices dropped, some would hiss, others would sound sad while saying mean things.
"Poor thing doesn't even know he's a monster."
"It's not his fault. If he had someone watching him, we wouldn't have to see him running around like a diseased stray."
Doors closed a heartbeat too fast.
"Get out, kid!"
"Disgusting...coming in here! Go, shoo!"
So Naruto learned how to disappear. At first, it was small things—holding his breath when footsteps passed outside his apartment, staying quiet on rooftops where the wind could carry laughter without questions. He watched the kids play together, never seen, always observing, tucking himself into shadows like they were blankets. But then he was found. A man with spiky black hair, tied back in a high ponytail, spotted him.
“Kid, hey... come on out. I won't hurt you,” he called, his voice calm but firm.
Naruto hesitated, trembling as fear gripped his small frame. His wide, wet eyes reflected a world of hurt, bruises visible on his arms—a painful testament to how he had been treated.
The man’s gaze softened at the sight of the frightened boy. He stood beside a child about Naruto’s age. The boy's curious eyes tugged at something deep within Naruto—a longing for connection that felt both essential and terrifying.
With a shaky breath, Naruto took a small step forward, driven by a desire for touch and comfort that threatened to overwhelm his fear. His heart raced as he cautiously reached out, extending his hand, fingers trembling, almost hovering in the air.
"Come here, it's okay," the man encouraged gently.
Naruto’s fingers brushed against the man’s hand, and a flicker of warmth sparked within him. After a moment of uncertainty, he summoned the courage to curl into the man's arms, seeking refuge. It was a fragile gesture, revealing just how vulnerable he truly felt, vulnerable yet desperate for the safety of closeness.
Strong arms wrapped around Naruto, enveloping him in warmth and security. Naruto nestled against him, tears spilling as he finally allowed himself to feel comfort, the shadows that had once suffocated him now beginning to recede. In that embrace, surrounded by the steady presence of this stranger, he felt a glimmer of hope—something far more precious than the fear that had kept him hidden for too long.
Naruto was tucked into his bed after he ate and played over at the Nara household. Shikaku...was the man's name. Shikaku Nara; he had a nice wife named Yoshino...and a son, whose name was Shikamaru. Naruto got to play with him for a little while after Yoshino put some watery green stuff on his bruises. They felt better. Shikamaru was nice too. In fact, Naruto liked this whole family...but he couldn't stay. Shikaku walked him home to the empty apartment that he stayed in alone. Made sure he was okay...and tucked him in...it was nice, even if it was brief.
He met with the Naras a few times... when he overheard a couple of parents down talking the family for associating with him.
"Don't they care what people think?"
"I wouldn't be caught dead around that demon!"
Naruto stopped going to the Nara complex. It would be best if he never went near the kind family again.
Naruto observed from the shadows, the way the ANBU watching him would bleed into different bodies, civilian-type looks. It was cool. No one knew that they were walking amongst them, but Naruto knew. Naruto had seen it happened and now he knew that's how they followed him. He wished he could do that too. Blend in with his surroundings...
Naruto was five when he realized that hiding wasn't good enough. Hiding still meant being Naruto. Naruto was a demon. Naruto was a bad kid. Naruto was always noticed.
The idea came to him when he was hiding from his watchers. He hid near the academy and watched from the bushes a class of students. They were little, like him. Not as little... but surely, that doesn't matter, right? Right! He practiced where he couldn't be seen. Practiced that technique that turned him into someone else.
He... wasn't good at it.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks bled into months... he was sitting cross-legged on the floor in his apartment, staring at his reflection in a warped metal pan he’d stolen from the trash. His face stared back at him—whisker marks, blonde hair, dim blue eyes; too much of everything.
“What if,” he murmured, mostly to himself, “I wasn’t me for a little while? Would they maybe... not hate me?” He knew how the technique was supposed to work; he had listened to them explain chakra theory when they didn't know he was listening. The hand seals and the difference between illusion and physical change. He just never could put it into practice. It never worked. Today, right here, right now...he felt it when he pushed his chakra after forming the hand seal—something warm buzzed and gathered under his skin.
The first time it worked, it was messy.
Smoke burst outward, thick and choking, and Naruto fell backward with a startled yelp. When it cleared, he felt lightheaded, but caught sight of his reflection in the metal pan and...it was him. Just, it wasn't. It was as if he were a girl now. The him looking back was a her. She had the same hair, but longer, falling over his shoulders messily, and it looked softer. Not like his. Not spikey. Her eyes were the same, but brighter, and rounder somehow, less sharp. The whisker marks were still there—faint, like someone had tried to erase them but hadn’t quite succeeded. Naruto stared. She stared back. “…oh,” he breathed. That wasn't his voice...it too was softer.
She felt... safe.
He didn’t have a name for her at first. Names mattered. Names got remembered. So for a while, she was just her. The girl. The other one. The quiet version.
Later—much later—he would call her Naruko.
But at five, all he knew was that when he wore her face, the world became kinder.
A couple of weeks after practicing the technique, he went to bed... exhausted, and when he woke, there was a simple long-sleeved black dress and a pair of green sandals. He didn't know who left them. He didn't know who had seen him practicing... but... they gave him something, so that he could hide in plain sight, right? That makes them nice. That makes them good.
Fingers grip the ends of her sleeves.
People didn’t look at her the same way. Their eyes slid past instead of sticking. Their voices didn’t get louder or angrier when she was too close. She was just another kid.
Naruto made himself some rules quickly.
Never drop his disguise where anyone can see.
Never talk so much that they can learn who he is.
Never stay too long—not yet.
At first, he could only hold her for an hour. Then two. By the end of that year, he could last nearly half a day, the chakra humming under his skin like a held note.
It was exhausting. It burned him out. Some nights, he fell asleep still wrapped in her clothes, too tired to care, and woke in a cold sweat when he realized the sun was up. But he never slipped in front of anyone. Naruto was careful. Naruto was smart. Naruto was learning.
Sometimes, when he was alone, he’d sit on the roof and talk... in her skin... with her voice...
They don’t stare at you.
They don’t hate you.
She never answered. She didn’t need to. She was him, and not him, and something in between that let him breathe.
Naruto didn’t know yet that this was the beginning of something far bigger than safety. He didn’t know about refinement, or perfection, or how this small, childish trick would one day turn into a jutsu famous enough to make grown shinobi choke on their pride.
All he knew was this: for the first time since he could remember, he had a way to exist without being hurt. And he was going to hold onto it for as long as he possibly could.
