Work Text:
Matthew knocked lightly before walking into the bedroom.
“Oh, good!” Mary said. “I was worried you might not make it to dinner tonight. How was your afternoon?”
“Dull and uneventful, honestly,” Matthew said sitting down on the bed.
“Well, we have some friends of Mama’s coming from Ripon for dinner tonight,” Mary said, sitting down at her mirror. “I suppose that might prove interesting.”
She opened the case of necklaces and picked one up to hold against her neck.
“That’s quite the necklace,” Matthew said as Mary looked at herself in the mirror.
“I can’t decide if I want to wear it tonight or not. Do I want to make people jealous?”
“Is that how you’ll decide?” he chuckled. “Do you want to make anyone jealous?”
“Not really,” Mary said. “Not tonight, anyway.”
“How about this one, then?” Matthew asked, picking up a nearby necklace.
“Very nice choice,” Mary agreed. “It goes better with the dress I was planning on wearing, anyway.”
She set down the first necklace.
The gong rang.
“I should go to my dressing room and ring for Molesley,” Matthew said.
“I’m sure he’s already on his way,” Mary said.
There was a knock at the door.
“That’s my cue to head out,” Matthew said, going to his dressing room.
