The sun glared down on the green grass of the field where Olivia and her parents sat on a picnic blanket. The smell of sweet pastries, hearty sandwiches, and crisp fruit juice filled the summer air alongside the giggles of children, including Olivia.
Her father picked her up, spinning her around in the air as she laughed and swatted at her hands.
When she reunited with the ground, she collapsed in a giggling heap in her mother's lap, being careful not to press on her pregnant stomach.
"Are you having a good day, mija?" Her mother said, tucking a strand of deep brown hair behind Olivia's ear.
Olivia nodded eagerly, squinting in the bright sun. "Yes, mamá! It's nice to be away from all the scary noises..." She reached for the teddy resting on the checkered blanket and squeezed it. Despite her youth, she knew why her parents had taken her out. The explosions and gunfire that seemed to grow nearer and nearer to their home every day had been taking a toll on all of them.
Her mother seemed to notice Olivia getting stuck in the memories; being kept up all night by the unfamiliar noises, watching Overwatch agents walk through the streets, not knowing if her friends would show up to school the next day.
"Hey, don't worry, mija. Mamá and papá will always keep you safe, okay? Plus, that's what Overwatch is here to do. They'll protect us. Okay?" she said confidently, tilting her head at her daughter. "You're such a precious girl, Olivia. You have mamá's eyes, and papá's nose..." she murmured, before reaching out to press her finger against the tip of Olivia's nose. "Boop!"
A smile broke out on the small girl's face, and she giggled, returning the action to her mother. "Boop!"
A distant noise broke the moment, and Olivia looked over to where her dad was staring at the sky. "Papá? What's wrong?"
"We have to go."
"Mi vida, what's happeni-"
"We have to go, now. Olivia, stay close to us."
He picked her up, and Olivia's brows furrowed as her dad and mom started running. She heard shouting and cries in the distance, along with the sounds of planes overhead. Her eyes burned as tears of fear began to pool, and she buried her face in her father's shoulder. "Papá, I'm scared..."
"It'll be okay, Olivia. Just hold onto papá."
Her father's voice was shaking.
The planes got louder and louder, and the screams got closer and closer, until everyone at the park was sprinting. Olivia tightened her grip on her father's shoulders as he ran, but her hands loosened as she saw her mother at least 100 feet behind, bent over and clutching her stomach. "Mamá!"
That caught her father's attention immediately, and his eyes widened, putting Olivia down on the ground. "Olivia. I need you to run with those Overwatch agents to the shelter. Okay? Don't stop running."
"But papá, what about má?! Don't leave me by myself!"
"OLIVIA. Listen to me, you have to go. We'll see you there soon, okay? Just GO!"
Olivia barely had a chance to wipe at the tears pouring down her face before she got swept up in the crowd, and started sprinting alongside everyone towards where uniformed men were directing them.
She looked back, but couldn't see her mother or her father.
Suddenly, an explosion erupted from behind them, and screams filled the air. She felt her body jolt forward from the blast, falling to her hands on the gravel of the carpark.
She could hear her mother screaming too.
"MAMÁ!!! PAPÁ!!!" Olivia turned around, standing up and trying to push through the people, but a blond man in armor grabbed her.
"Come on, kid. Gotta get you to safety."
She fought against the man's hold, but she was too weak, and erupted into sobs against his chest. The man pressed a sympathetic hand against her hair, rushing her towards the shelter.
Olivia gasped as she sat up, sheets pooling around her hips as she panted for breath. She pressed a hand against her chest, feeling her heart pound, and felt the remnants of tears on her cheeks. She felt around desperately beside her, hearing a groan from Satya.
"What is it..."
Olivia sniffled.
Satya immediately rubbed the sleep from her eyes, propping herself up on her elbows.
"My love..." She gathered Olivia into her arms, the cold of her prosthetic soothing against her girlfriend's warm face. "Was it another nightmare?"
Olivia nodded wordlessly, pressing her face into Satya's chest, the same way she had tried to find comfort in that soldier's arms all those years ago. The memory had her choking up all over again.
Satya's brows furrowed, and she held the other girl closer.
"Do you need something? Water?" Satya's gentle, quiet voice came.
Olivia shook her head, sniffling once more. "Just... Just you."
If it weren't for the responsibility she felt in the moment, Satya would be blushing at that. But she had a job to do, a person to care for, so she kept her composure.
"I'll stay with you. I'm not going anywhere, Olivia."
Satya stroked Olivia's hair gently, keeping her tucked under her chin. It took a while, but eventually, Olivia drifted back to sleep.
Satya smiled down at Olivia as her chest rose and fell, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her girlfriend's head. "Sleep well, my love."
