It was a dark, starless night. Inuyasha's pack were sleeping peacefully inside a cave for the night, their only source of light and warmth, was the fire cackling in the center of the cave.
Shippo was snuggled up in Kagome's arms. Said teenage girl was asleep against the wall. Beside her, was Sango, snoring softly with a peaceful expression. Whatever it was she was dreaming, it must be something wonderful to put her in a deep and peaceful sleep.
Miroku was asleep near the cave entrance, staff in hand. Only Inuyasha was still awake, her beautiful face scrunched into a worried frown as she looked down at her pup in her arms.
The little one was suckling on her breast but it was clear the pup was still upset. She wondered, "what am I doing wrong?" She's fed Hyourin already, cleaned him, played with him, rocked him gently in the hopes he would fall asleep again... But...
"Waaah!" The little silver haired pup cries as he stopped breastfeeding. "Shh shh shh don't cry little one, mommy's here" she soothed gently bouncing her baby, but that only made things worse.
Her baby started crying even louder. Inuyasha groaned and held her pup closer to her chest, tears of frustration beginning to fall down her eyes.
"Inuyasha?" She snapped her head toward the voice and saw Kagome sitting up and rubbing her eyes. "What's the matter? Is the baby alright?" She asked in concern.
"Yes... No... i--I Don't know" Inuyasha released a soft sob as the little pup in her arms continued crying. "I wish Sessh was here" she mumbled. Kagome smiled gently before walking over to her friend and sitting down beside her.
"You miss him don't you?"
"A lot" Inuyasha admits. "Stupid bastard just had to leave just weeks after I gave birth to our son" she growled.
"But you know why he did it. He had to leave, he had to lead his mother away from us" Kagome shuddered as she remembered the 'ice Queen' of an inu the woman known as Sesshomaru's mother was. Kagome had lost count of the amount of times lady Inukimi had attempted to kill Inuyasha or cause her miscarriage
"I want him here" Inuyasha mumbled.
The sound of the pup's cries gradually grew louder and louder until the others woke up. "Er... Wha's wrong?" Shippo groggily said looking around their surroundings. Miroku had jumped to his feet, staff at the ready, pointing it at the girls. "Oh.. Haha... It's only little Hyourin" he chuckled before yawning.
Inuyasha sighed. "I'm sorry, guys I.. I don't know what to do. He won't eat, won't sleep, he keeps crying and it's stressing me out"
"How about singing for him?" Shippo suggested. "That's what my mother used to do to put me to sleep"
"Yeah good idea Shippo! Inuyasha how about you sing for your son? babies love lullabies" Kagome agreed.
Inuyasha blushed, feeling embarrassed. "I.. Ok" she whispered looking down at her crying infant. She tried to think of what she could sing for him before she remembered an old lullaby her mother used to sing for her when she was small
"Cast away... Your worries my dear, for tomorrow comes a new day, hold to me you've nothing to fear.. For your dreams are not far away" she sang in the most soft soothing voice.
Almost immediately her little pup began to quiet down, as she rocked him gently in her arms as she continues to sing.
"As you lay your head and you rest, may your dreams take over my love.. "
Soon her friends begin to settle down and lull themselves to sleep thanks to Inuyasha's lullaby "listen close, my child of the west, for your destiny lies above"
"Though the world is cruel, there's a light that still shines, in the darkest days of our lives" she laid down on the floor with her pup placed beside her.
"When all hope seems lost and you can't find your way, think of me as you look to the sky... Child of mind, your future is bright.. For your father's blood's in your veins.."
She kissed her sleeping pup's chubby cheek. "In dark times I pray you will fight.. For the world will soon know your name"
Inuyasha closed her eyes and soon she too fell into deep slumber.
Unaware that just nearby, her mate Sesshomaru was watching over them like the distant protector that he was....
The end
