Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Three years ago, Natalia Koutolika returned to her little town near the border with Mongolia to discover that her best friend-- who she had hoped would be other things, as well-- had died in circumstances no one wished to say. That night, she and her whole family left Russia for good.

Two years ago, the keytarist for the post-punk riot grrl rock band Magica Riot - one Iris Carr - went missing, and mourned, particularly by her partner and partner, Sara Ward. Publicly, the reason was unknown. Privately, the magical girls of the Starlight Alliance called Riot Red, Yellow, Green and Blue cursed the Pandora Corruption, and kept fighting.

Three months ago, Natalia and her family finally found their way to Portland, Oregon, where her father began the long, slow process of getting a commercial fishing licence, and they all began the long, horrible process of getting by.

One month ago, a boy who was never a boy cried out the words "MAIDENSONG HARMONY POWER, GO LIVE!" for the first time, and laughed as the drummer she marched to confirmed that Riot Purple had always had the pure heart of a maiden. Days later, Magica Riot announced that they had a new keytarist, Portland's native daughter, Claire Ryland.

Three weeks ago, the night sky flared with meteors unpredicted by astronomers, one of which landed, partially, through the shitty apartment of Natalia Koutolika. This meteorite turned out to be at least partially composed of Jasper Irinka. Jasper turned out to make friends much more easily; soon, Natalia was swept up into an awkward friend group she wasn’t sure what to do with.

One week ago, Magica Riot encountered a trio of dark magical girls, and Claire and Sara both knew that one of them wore the face of Iris Carr.

One night ago, Natalia Koutolika broke through all that awkwardness with a single dropkick.

One hour ago, Magica Riot arrived at The Den in Portland to play a mix of original songs and covers of Bikini Kill and Per Ink, and to review some very interesting sensor scans.

Right now, Claire Ryland, surrounded by her friends, sends a text to Natalia Koutolika, who feels herself alone.
