Chapter Text
When Maxx walked into school on that crisp fall morning, he could already tell that day would be eventful. There was an energy in the air that hadn’t been there last week, and it gave him absolute chills. Maybe that was because he forgot his jacket, though.
Maxx tucked his hands into his pockets, hunching his shoulders to make himself seem smaller. As an omega, the least thing he wanted was to attract attention, but somehow attention always found him anyway.
“Hey, Kuntz!”
Maxx stiffened at the voice, knowing all too well who it’d be. He hesitantly turned, only to find the blonde jock staring back at him. Daniel Ellis was a notorious bully to every nerd in Highland Park High, and he also happened to come from a very popular Alpha pack. He had bright blue orbs that sparkled like the ocean and windswept hair that always looked perfect. Maxx’s stomach always flipped whenever he saw the boy, but he chalked that feeling up to his instincts and prepared for the worst.
“What do you want, Danny?”
“I want to know why you’re in my hallway.”
Maxx rolled his eyes. “I didn’t know it was yours.”
“Yeah, well I’m trying to get to my class, and I don’t want your stench taking up the entire hallway.” Danny flashed a grin, one that made Maxx’s knees wobbly. He needed to get out of there before Danny’s scent did something to his head. He mumbled something close to an apology and hurried away.
The bell rang, but since Maxx didn’t want to go to class anyway, he hid in one of the bathrooms. Staring down at his hands, he asked himself what was wrong with him. He’d never felt that way around his bully before, and even now he felt his body betraying him. He wondered if his feelings had anything to do with that weird curse he apparently had.
Ever since he was younger, his parents had told him stories about magical beings and curses. They’d always told them as fiction, but for some reason they’d also hinted that he had one too. Specifically something about how if he fell in love with one specific person, the world would end. He’d disregarded it when he was younger, falling into internet culture and ignoring everyone else. But now, at this strange feeling, he wondered if that had something to do with it.
Sighing, Maxx opened his bag and took out his diary. He wrote in it daily, and though it was a bit early for him to write an entry, but he figured he needed to update it before the feeling was gone.
Dear diary,
It’s early to be writing this–it’s only 9:32–but I figured you’d wanna know. Danny came up to me today, and for some reason I got a really weird feeling. Like, usually my stomach flips and I get butterflies, but it was more than that. I could feel my face burning up.
I think it might have something to do with that curse Mom and Dad keep telling me about, because I don’t think I’d feel that way naturally about him. I mean, yeah he has nice hair and nice eyes and he’s really hot but it’s not like I’d ever want to be with him. I’m too much of a loser for him and that’s why I’m always really closed off.
Honestly, I just hope this doesn’t mean I might go into heat early.
Anyway, I’ll probably write more later. I can hear someone coming into the bathroom, and I don’t want people to know that I have a diary. Bye bye!!!!
— Maxx ♡
His head snapped up as he heard footsteps walking into the bathroom. In his haste to shove his diary back in his bag, he dropped his pencil and it rolled under the door. Getting on his knees to try and grasp for it, he froze when he saw two pairs of feet.
Maxx’s heart dropped when he recognized the scent and realized it was Danny. He was walking in with one of his friends, and they were talking about something related to sports. All of it went in one ear and out the other, though Maxx was much more concerned with making himself invisible. He climbed up on top of the toilet, hugging his knees to his chest. He hauled his backpack up as well, clutching it in his lap.
He could hear the two boys laughing outside the stall, and the sound gave him butterflies again. Maxx hugged his stomach, desperately trying to make the feeling stop. In the process, he slipped and banged against the wall. The entire bathroom went silent, and Maxx held his breath. He prayed they wouldn’t notice him.
After a moment, the two resumed talking, and Maxx breathed a sigh of relief. When their conversation came to a close. Maxx heard footsteps echo out of the bathroom, and he allowed himself to drop his feet to the floor. To his shock, he heard a voice.
“I know you’re there, fag.” His voice was an overwhelming sound, one that rocked Maxx to his core. A shiver ran down the boy’s spine, and he went pale. Still, he stayed silent, not wanting to get beat up in the bathroom. “You’re not sneaky. I can smell you.” Maxx swallowed hard, squeezing his eyes shut like that will help.
The footsteps drew closer, and Maxx could see the shadow of Danny’s feet in the gap below the door. The first thing that Maxx picked up was how potent his scent was. It smelled like tobacco and vanilla, though that was hard to pick up because of the AXE body spray.
“I’m not gonna hurt you, Cunts. Honest.”
It’s Kuntz, Maxx silently corrected, but didn’t dare say anything. He knew from experience that if someone said something like that, they were probably going to beat you up once you got out of the stall. He stared at the lock, trying to ignore the part of him that just wanted to open it. Before he could do anything, he watched his pencil roll back under the door towards him, and then heard the footsteps recede out of the bathroom.
He shakily picked up his pencil, shoving it into the bag before curling up again. He was shocked by Danny’s actions. The fact that he’d even returned the pencil in the first place was generous, but leaving Maxx alone after that? It made his head spin. Maybe Danny wasn’t that bad. Maybe Maxx just didn’t know the right parts of him.
After a few minutes, he finally relented and slid his bag onto his shoulders before unlocking the door.
