Work Text:
“My love?” Gale asked gently. “Please talk to me. What’s wrong?” Helena gave him no response. She couldn’t bear to look at him, she couldn’t stop the anxieties and what they whispered to her.
Deep down, she knew she was free of Bhaal. She hadn’t felt the Urge in months, not since defeating Orin and defying her father. But the fear still gripped her. The fear of losing control, of going back to who she had been forced to be. Tears pricked at her eyes the more she thought about it.
She had been like this all day, curled into a ball on their bed in nothing but her pajamas, suffering panic attack after panic attack. She knew she was worrying Gale, and she felt horrible for it, but she could not bring herself to even speak for fear of what might come out.
Gale heaved a deep sigh as he stood up. “I didn’t want to have to do this, but you’ve given me no choice.” His footsteps moved away from the bed and across the room. Silence fell just long enough for Helena to wonder if he had left, and then she heard it.
“I’m sticking with you,” accompanied by the staccato of the piano. Gale paused for a moment before continuing, “‘Cause I’m made out of glue.” In her confusion, Helena finally turned around to look at him. “Anything that you might do, I’m gonna do too.” Another pause in the song where Gale spoke, “I can sing this next verse myself, but I’ll need your help after that. Even though I can, I doubt many people want to hear me sing a duet with myself.” She chuckled at that. He extended his hand out to her. “Come, sing with me please. I miss your beautiful voice.”
“Okay,” Helena said softly. She slowly rose from their bed and made her way over to Gale, taking his hand and letting herself be pulled to sit next to him. He continued the song:
“You held up a stage coach in the rain
And I’m doing the same
Saw you hanging from a tree
And I made believe it was me.”
He looked at her, expectantly. She breathed once before taking on the high notes as he took the lower ones.
“I’m sticking with you
‘Cause I’m made out of glue
Anything that you might do
I’m gonna do too”
The key changes to a more melancholic tone, and the song continues:
“Some people go
Into the stratosphere
Others fighting
To belong”
The cords become hopeful again:
“But with you by my side
I can do anything
When we swing
We hang past right and wrong”
Gale casts a spell on the piano, causing it to play on its own, as he sweeps Helena off of the bench and into a dance.
“I’ll do anything for you
Anything you want me to
I’ll do anything for you
Oh, oh, I’m sticking with you”
He repeats the last line, almost as if to drive the point home, as they dance until the song ends.
With the final notes still echoing in the case body of the piano, Helena pulls herself close to Gale, wrapping her arms around him. “Thank you,” She whispers.
“Anytime, my love.”
