Work Text:
Light steps on the wood board echo quietly throughout the room, a few small clinks follow after when Fusakin picks up a bowl of one of his favoured confections- Strawberry ice cream.
Though not his first choice (that title would go to strawberry daifuku) for a night like this it's not like he could ask anyone to go out and buy him anything else. And it's not like strawberry ice cream is bad! Fusakin takes a spoon from one of his cabinets, scooping up a bit of the frozen treat and taking a bite as he turns and makes his way outside, carefully opening the creaky doors as to not wake someone up. It'd be impolite to wake his guests, after all.
"Hmmm, hmmm," he hums to himself, closing the door behind himself and stopping when he hears the thump of it closed. Was it too loud? It wasn't. The wind runs quietly through his loose shirt, having not brought his cape.
Now, thinking of the guests, he's reminded of when they came here today... Marikin, Bachikin, and Sigkin had been on a mission, ending up at the Mausoleum to rest after since it had been nearby. He treated them to some food and then they all went to sleep... They had all agreed to stay in Fusakin's room because every other one was dusty.
With a sigh, he continues through the garden of the Mausoleum, settling nicely under a large tree. It would be chilly for any normal person, but Fusakin is an ikenuma, giving him a tougher body; it's easier to conserve warmth. He takes another contented bite of his ice cream as he continues to wonder.
Do you think they're dreaming? Maybe. I wonder what they're dreaming about.
Unbeknownst to Fusakin, one of his guests wasn't dreaming at all.
Bachikin stirs at the feeling of a prescense furthering away, her pervious snores fizzling out into a few light breaths as she tugs the comforter of her futon further over herself.
She can't go back to rest, so she turns onto her other side.
Then her back.
And she finally sits up with a quiet yawn (or as quiet as she can muster), glancing around.
She reaches blindly for her shades—she had taken them off before heading to sleep—and lazily puts them on, despite the current darkness of the night.
Sigkin is here, she notes as she pushes the comforter off, getting on her feet, Marikin is here...
Finally making her way to the door, she slides it open, exiting the room and making her way out. Bachikin quickly closes the door again to make sure her friends don't get cold, even with their blankets and better reservation for warmth. That means Fusakin went somewhere, bachi!
Now, with a bit more determination in her steps, she begins to venture out into the gardens. I can still feel his presence, so I don't need to wake the others and search, bachi. I can feel myself getting warmer... The pace of her saunter speeds into a sprint as she pinpoints his location, sitting (or crouching? It's hard to tell) behind a tree.
Is he hiding, bachi?!
Bachikin stops just as she reaches the tree, skidding slightly on the dew-dampened grass.
Her head swivels right towards Fusakin, and she catches sight of his read headband. With that distraction, she's unable to react quickly enough, ending up falling face first onto the grass.
A few seconds of stunned silence ensues before one of them finally speaks up.
"B-Bachikin?!?" Fusakin stammers. Bachikin looks up at him at the sound of her name.
"Fusakin!!" She pulls herself up, wiping some dew off of her torso. "I was looking for you, bachi! I felt your presence leave, so I woke up, bachi."
Fusakin looks around cautiously as if anybody else were watching, before looking back at Bachikin, staring.
She woke up, just at the loss of a prescense... He clears his throat. "Well, no wonder you went looking for me~ You really care for all of your friends, don't you?" He pauses to take another bite of his ice cream. "You can sit next to me. If you want!"
The glasses-wearing numa nods happily, getting up and quickly settling down next to Fusakin against the tree trunk he was leaning against. Her eyes are drawn towards the sweet confection and she perks up. "You're eating ice cream, bachi? Can I have some??"
"Did you bring another spoon?"
"Why would I need another one, bachi? There's one right there, bachi!"
Bachikin reaches over to grab Fusakin's spoon, the metal already warmed by his hands and fitting nicely into her's. He sputters as heat rises on his cheeks, trying to reach for it back, but it's held it out of reach. "I'm sure I won't eat too much, bachi!"
"Hey! Give that back!!!" Fusakin puts his bowl aside as to not drop anything before trying to reach out for the silverware, leaning slightly against Bachikin as he does. He ignores her warmth (hoping the darkness shields his blush) and snatches it back, plopping back down into his spot with a huff. "Bachikin~ You have to ask nicely. Okay?"
He reaches for his bowl... To find nothing. He blinks, looking at the ground before turning to the other numa.
In Bachikin's hands is a very familiar bowl of a sweet, pink, frozen treat. "Did you say something, bachi?"
...
Fusakin sighs in defeat and slumps back against the tree trunk, dropping the spoon back onto the bowl, to which Bachikin is very pleased about. "I knew you'd share, bachi!"
She takes the spoon, scooping up a bit of the cream and happily taking a bite. The headband-donned numa looks away in despair at the thought of his very own treat being devoured by one of the friends he trusted most– .... And then he feels a cold poke against his cheek.
He looks back with a small "huh?", blinking in surprise at the sight of Bachikin holding the spoon up to him, a dollop of ice cream on it. "Wait, what?"
"Come on. Friends share, right, bachi?" Her previously confident smile turns just a bit more sheepish, and—it might have been the lighting, he's not sure if he hopes it was—a small dusting of red flourishes on her cheeks. Fusakin stutters before nodding. "Well- Well, yeah! Thank you~☆"
He leans in to eat the ice cream off of the spoon, before quickly pulling away, partially in embarrassment.
Bachikin snickers to herself before going back to eating. The whispers of the wind sound quietly, filling the now comforting (yet somewhat awkward) silence between the two numas.
She eats another spoonful before speaking up. "So, what's Fusakin doing out here all alone, bachi?"
"Eh, uh," He pauses to think. "I got hungry in the middle of the night."
"Hmm~ No wonder you had ice cream out, bachi!" She eats yet another another spoonful with a cheerful grin, leaning towards Fusakin. With a sudden burst of confidence, she blurts out "You know, Bachikin heard from the townspeople that today is a very important holiday, bachi. Do you remember what day it is?"
The other numa squints slightly in thought. Now that he ponders it, he swears there was something that would happen when the sun rises, he remembers Syumitaro telling him about it because his favourite daifuku vendor was going to have a sale.
With realization, Fusakin perks up and looks towards Bachikin. "Valentine's? Doesn't that have something to do with feelings?"
The glasses-wearing numas nods. "Sigkin told me! It's about feelings of the heart, bachi. That you give chocolates to those very important to you, bachi." She scoops up the now melty ice cream, before holding it up to the other once more, "Bachikin doesn't have any chocolate right now, but she has ice cream, bachi."
The small, lingering flush on Fusakin's cheeks go bright red at the implication, "H-haaahh?!? me?? Really?!?" "Yes, you, bachi!" "I... I guess won't say no!" He hesitates before actually taking the spoon this time, eating the confection before shuffling to get another spoonful, this one instead guided towards Bachikin's own mouth.
"In that case, it isn't fair for me to ignore returning a lovely numa's gift!☆" The ikenuma resists the urge to look away to hide his blush, facing her directly.
With a moment of silence, he hesitates-- "...Was I-?"
Bachikin interrupts immediately by taking the offer, eating the ice cream quickly before pushing the spoon away in favour of kissing Fusakin, gently grabbing his face to keep him still. The warmth of his own face melds into her own, comfortably balmy against the cold breath of the wind.
Fusakin's shock kicks in immediately and he goes still, and at the realization of what was currently happening, it feels like his face lights up in flames. The pads of her fingers brush over his cheek and, he hesitates, but his eyes slowly flutter closed, unsure about her own due to her shades.
He pulls back with a breathless, nervous giggle, eyes flitting to anywhere but her before finally looking at her in her shades. "...Um, wow. Wow. I guess we're... Are we...?"
In response she grins, clearly amused. "You can say girlfriend, bachi."
"O-of course! You-.." He pauses, swallowing down a voice crack. "So, are you my girlfriend now? Hehe....☆"
Bachikin cozies up against his side, content. "Mhm. Enjoy it before the others wake up, bachi!" Her head droops against his shoulder. "You better be planning dates right now, Bachi."
"I am!!!"
One of the doors leading outside of the mausoleum opens suddenly to reveal Sigkin, with Marikin trailing slowly behind.
"Bachikin? Fusakin??"
