Midlink Week 2026 Day 6 "Warmth/Touch"

Work Text:

It was hard to believe that any creature lived on this mountain, yeti or not. The blizzard winds threatened to pierce Link's fur, though it was a mild discomfort compared to Midna, with nothing but her fused shadow mask shielding her. She shivered against his back, her grasp on his fur twitching but unyielding, as if frozen in place. And of course, with the blizzard diffusing light around them, Link barely casted a shadow at all, certainly not enough of one for Midna to hide in.

If she was going to survive, Link needed to find her shelter, and fast. There was the risk that they would lose the scent trail of the fish if Link went looking for shelter, but Midna was more important. Link quickly turned off the path of the scent, and raised his head up high trying to simultaneously look for shelter, and keep the wind off Midna’s face. Soon enough, Link spotted traces of an animal. Any animal living on this mountain would need shelter, so he started to follow the tracks. Sure enough, the trail led to a decently sized cave. Before going in, Link sniffed the air to see if the animal was still there. When he determined that the animal was gone, he ducked into the cave and promptly sat down, refusing to move

“Why are we stopping? We need to find that mirror shard!” Midna exclaimed.

Link huffed at Midna as she shivered even more. It was hard to give her a sharp look while she was on his back, but he did his absolute best.

“Fine! We can take a break! But only for a little bit, okay? We need to get to the twilight realm to stop Zant as soon as possible!”

Link knew that Midna would do this. Ever since she pledged herself to save the light realm as well as the twilight realm, she was always pushing herself way too hard. Link definitely had to do something about that. Link shook to get the snow off his pelt, also shaking Midna off his back in the process. After Midna floated down to the ground, Link went up to her and nuzzled into her small body, making her laugh.

“W-what are you doing? Stop that!” Midna protested.

Link was not having it though. He pushed his friend… or whatever they were now… down with his nose and curled up around her to warm her up. Though Midna squirmed around a little, she did not leave his side. Midna eventually stopped shivering and the two slowly fell asleep sharing their warmth.

“I guess we can stay here… for a little longer.” Midna said with a yawn, “Thanks for looking out for me, Link.”
